Verify that you system is capable of running the virtual version of

OneFS
VM nodes are for demo purposes only and are not available for support, questions, or
repair by Isilon Global Services.

System Requirements:

1. RAM: Must have at least 1 Gigabyte of RAM

2. Must have a VT-capable processor and have the feature enabled in the BIOS

3. HD: Must have at least 17 gigs of free space on the hardrive to run 1 Virtual
node, 16G more of space per additional VM

4. VMware Server, Fusion, Workstation or Player installed

VMware Player if free and the guide is based on it.

Other versions are very similar in configuration.

The site for VMware Player is

Use this template to collect some network information
Internal Network:

External Network:

IP Range:

Netmask:

Gateway:

EMC Isilon OneFS Simulator Install Guide 2

Determine the internal and external ranges to be used

From the command prompt, type ipconfig

The network generated for VMnet1 by vmware will become your internal range.

In this example, the network 192.168.208.

The range I would write down would be 192.168.208.101-192.168.208.109. Anything, but

the.1 address is fine.

The netmask I would write down is 255.255.255.0

The network generated for VMnet8 by vmware will become your external range.

In this example, the network 192.168.47

EMC Isilon OneFS Simulator Install Guide 3

The range I would write down would be 192.168.47.101-192.168.47.109. Anything but
the .1 address is fine

The netmask I would write down is 255.255.255.0

The gateway I would write down is 192.168.47.1. The address VMware has created on
that network is your gateway.

Enter this information in the step above.

Install the EMC Isilon OneFS

Simulator cluster
Install and configure the virtual cluster
Unzip the EMC Isilon OneFS Simulator Node zip file

Rlght-click on the file and choose "Extract All..."

EMC Isilon OneFS Simulator Install Guide 4

Choose a good location and Click "Extract"

Once complete you should see a folder that looks something like this
in that specified location

EMC Isilon OneFS Simulator Install Guide 5

Open the folder

You will see several files and folder. Each clone directory will be a virtual node, if you
want. You can just run a single node, or you can build a virtual cluster up to 6 nodes.

EMC Isilon OneFS Simulator Install Guide 6

Open the clone1 folder and double click on the .vmx file

EMC Isilon OneFS Simulator Install Guide 7

VMware software should start

If prompted to install tools, choose not to.

The system may prompt you to find the .vmx file. If so, just browse back to the clone1
folder

The first boot of the virtual node will take some time.

EMC Isilon OneFS Simulator Install Guide 8

When prompted to format the drives, type yes and hit return

This is when the virtual drives in the clone directory will start to consume 16G of space.

EMC Isilon OneFS Simulator Install Guide 9

Once the node is done, configure your cluster as any other cluster

Choose 1 to create a new cluster

EMC Isilon OneFS Simulator Install Guide 10

Complete first steps of wizard

1. Set the root password

2. Set the admin password

3. Do NOT enable SupportIQ

4. Set a cluster name

EMC Isilon OneFS Simulator Install Guide 11

Continue Wizard

1. Choose the encoding

2. Choose to configure the netmast

3. Set the netmask for the internal network

Configure the internal network

1. Choose 3 to configure the ranges

2. Choose 1 to Add an IP Range

3. Enter the lowest IP in the range

4. Enter the hight IP in the range

You numbers will most likely be different that what is here.

It make take a few minutes before the node finishes the configuration and is available.

EMC Isilon OneFS Simulator Install Guide 19

This is not uncommon to see on the console

Now the node is up, you can ssh or use the web interface to make use of it.

EMC Isilon OneFS Simulator Install Guide 20

Connect to the web interface

Enter the first IP address in the external range that you configured.

You will see a warning. It is safe to click Continue.

EMC Isilon OneFS Simulator Install Guide 21

Now you can login as root or admin

Some warning will be on the system, this is expected

EMC Isilon OneFS Simulator Install Guide 22

It's be to quiet the event

You can go to Status > Events > Summary

You should see a warn related to the fact that the virtual machine only has 4 drive and real
nodes have at least 12.

Click the Quiet link to get rid of the warning.

You wil have to do this will each virtual node you add.

EMC Isilon OneFS Simulator Install Guide 23

SSH to the virutal node will also work

Enter the lowest IP address that you configured for the external range

EMC Isilon OneFS Simulator Install Guide 24

Login as root

Add the rest of the nodes to the

cluster
Add the rest of the nodes of the cluster
Adding the rest of the nodes is optional
Just running a single node can be very useful, but a full three or six node cluster allows for
more testing and experimentation

For each additional node you want to join to the cluster, explorer to the clone2,3,4,5,or 6
folder and double click on the .vmx file. You will again have to type yes to formatting the
drives

Most laptops will only be able to support a three node cluster.

EMC Isilon OneFS Simulator Install Guide 25

Please note that adding nodes to the cluster will continue to take more CPU, RAM and
Disk space

Adding the node to the cluster

Once the clone is booted up and formatted:

1. Choose 2 to Join an existing cluster

2. Choose 1 to join your cluster

EMC Isilon OneFS Simulator Install Guide 26

Once done, that node will be part of the cluster

Running virtual nodes on ESX

Running virtual nodes on ESX
To run virtual nodes on an ESX server, they must be coverted with the converter tool from VMware.
Use the Converter tool for vCenter or download and install VMware vCenter Converter Standalone.
Both are free and I will use the standalone in the example below

EMC Isilon OneFS Simulator Install Guide 29

Run the tools and click "Convert Machine"

EMC Isilon OneFS Simulator Install Guide 30

For the source choose "VMware Workstation or other VMware
virtual machine"

EMC Isilon OneFS Simulator Install Guide 31

Choose Browse

EMC Isilon OneFS Simulator Install Guide 32

Browse to the .vmx file in the .vga directory, NOT in the clone
directories

If you accidently do use a clone directory, it just won't work.

EMC Isilon OneFS Simulator Install Guide 33

Continue in the wizard

Click "Next"

EMC Isilon OneFS Simulator Install Guide 34

Enter the information for the ESX server that will host this VM

EMC Isilon OneFS Simulator Install Guide 35

Choose a name for the Virtual Machine and continue

Click Next

EMC Isilon OneFS Simulator Install Guide 36

Optionally choose a datastore and continue

Click Next

EMC Isilon OneFS Simulator Install Guide 37

On the options screen you may want to change the networks and
continue

If a network change is needed, click Edit next to the Networks section

Click Next when done

EMC Isilon OneFS Simulator Install Guide 38

Click Finish to convert

EMC Isilon OneFS Simulator Install Guide 39

The task will then start

The time estimates can be way off.

EMC Isilon OneFS Simulator Install Guide 40

Once complete, the VM can now be powered on

One you have the VM on your ESX server, if you want to run more than one node, you will
then just convert it to a template and create new VMs from that template
