ST. PAUL’S EV. LUTHERAN CHURCH

10th Sunday of Pentecost July 29th & August 1st, 2010

Theme of the Day

Take Great Comfort

Jesus is Coming Soon!

Hymns: 528 v1-2 528 v3-4 416 & 367 & 310 327

Order of Service: The Common Service (p 15-25)

First Reading: 1 Kings 13:4-6, 11, 15-19, 23-26

The “man of God” pronounced God’s curse on the heathen altar
at Bethel. God’s Word was fulfilled. However, the “man of God”
failed to listen to God’s clear words. He listened to the lies of
a false prophet and lost his life as a result. Satan’s lies are
abundant. Let’s stay in God’s Word and cling to the comfort of the
truth.

Second Reading: John 8:31-38, 44, 47

A mark of Jesus’ disciples is to continue in God’s Word, that is to
listen to it and take it to heart. Jesus warns some Jews who
argued and didn’t listen. Since they wanted to hold to lies, Jesus
warns them—they were children of the devil. What a blessing to con-
tinue in God’s Word and remain children of God through faith in Christ
Jesus.

Sermon Text: 2 Thessalonians 2:13-17

1 Kings 13:4-6, 11, 15-19, 23-26

4 When King Jeroboam heard what the man of God cried out against the altar at Be-

thel, he stretched out his hand from the altar and said, "Seize him!" But the hand he
stretched out toward the man shriveled up, so that he could not pull it back. 5 Also,
the altar was split apart and its ashes poured out according to the sign given by the
man of God by the word of the LORD.
6 Then the king said to the man of God, "Intercede with the LORD your God and

pray for me that my hand may be restored." So the man of God interceded with the
LORD, and the king's hand was restored and became as it was before. 11 Now there
was a certain old prophet living in Bethel, whose sons came and told him all that the
man of God had done there that day. They also told their father what he had said to
the king. 5 So the prophet said to him, "Come home with me and eat."
16 The man of God said, "I cannot turn back and go with you, nor can I eat bread or

drink water with you in this place. 17 I have been told by the word of the LORD: `You
must not eat bread or drink water there or return by the way you came.'" 18 The old
prophet answered, "I too am a prophet, as you are. And an angel said to me by the
word of the LORD: `Bring him back with you to your house so that he may eat bread
and drink water.'" (But he was lying to him.) 19 So the man of God returned with him
and ate and drank in his house.
23 When the man of God had finished eating and drinking, the prophet who had

brought him back saddled his donkey for him. 24 As he went on his way, a lion met
him on the road and killed him, and his body was thrown down on the road, with
both the donkey and the lion standing beside it. 25 Some people who passed by saw
the body thrown down there, with the lion standing beside the body, and they went
and reported it in the city where the old prophet lived.
26 When the prophet who had brought him back from his journey heard of it, he said,

"It is the man of God who defied the word of the LORD. The LORD has given him
over to the lion, which has mauled him and killed him, as the word of the LORD had
warned him."

John 8:31-38, 44, 47

31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you

are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you
free." 33 They answered him, "We are Abraham's descendants and have never
been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?"
34 Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.

35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever.

36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. 37 I know you are Abraham's

descendants. Yet you are ready to kill me, because you have no room for my word.

38 I am telling you what I have seen in the Father's presence, and you do what you
have heard from your father."
44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire.

He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth
in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of
lies.
47 He who belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that

you do not belong to God."

2 Thessalonians 2:13-17
13 But we ought always to thank God for you, brothers loved by the Lord, because

from the beginning God chose you to be saved through the sanctifying work of the
Spirit and through belief in the truth. 14 He called you to this through our gospel, that
you might share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. 15 So then, brothers, stand firm
and hold to the teachings we passed on to you, whether by word of mouth or by let-
ter.
16 May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his

grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, 17 encourage your hearts and
strengthen you in every good deed and word.

SPECIAL PRAYERS
On pages 10-11 in the front of our hymnal, there are prayers for special
occasions. There are many more personal prayers 134-139 covering a whole range
of special requests. May God bless you as we continue to “take everything to the
Lord in prayer.”

PASTOR MIKE IS PREACHING AT HIS SON-IN-LAW’S INSTALLATION

Pastor Mike is preaching this Sunday and Monday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in
Wisconsin Rapids where his son-in-law, James Douglas, is being installed. Pastor
Douglas is married to his oldest daughter, Sarah. For five years they served Re-
deemer Lutheran Church in Pierre, South Dakota. Pastor Douglas and his wife,
Sarah, are blessed with one daughter, Emma. Pastor Douglas will serve alongside
of Pastor Marty Baur who is a brother to Pastor Scharrer’s wife, Kathryn. How
amazing! Pastor Duncan’s son-in-law and Pastor Scharrer’s brother-in-law will
serve as associates!

2 Thessalonians
Theme: The 2nd Coming of Christ
and Our Victory over the Enemies of the Church

Circumstances of this Letter

The Apostle Paul had sent Timothy back to check on the Christians in
Thessalonica. His heart was filled with concern for them because of the persecution
they were undergoing. The report Paul received from Timothy was encouraging
and discouraging. On the positive side, the Christians in Thessalonica were growing
in their faith in spite of persecution (1:3,4). On the negative side, the Christians in
Thessalonica were confused about the 2nd coming of Christ.

Flow of Thought in 2 Thessalonians

After the typical beginning Paul expresses his thankfulness to God for the Thessalo-
nians and the progress they have made in their faith and love. Indeed Paul even
boasted to others how the Thessalonian Christians were “holding up” under perse-
cution.
Paul then reminds his readers that although they were suffering at the present time,
the wicked will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction and exclusion from the
presence of the Lord. In sharp contrast to the wicked in that day Christ will come to
be glorified in his saints and they in him.
Paul then addresses a misunderstanding about the coming of the Day of the Lord.
Some thought the day had already come. Paul explains that these “signs” must be
fulfilled first – 1) An all-out rebellion, a falling away from the faith (“apostasy”); and 2)
the revealing of the “man of lawlessness” the Antichrist who comes from “within the
church” and rules for centuries (obviously he is not a person but an institution). For
many centuries the Christian church has identified the Antichrist based on the de-
scriptions in the Bible. Sadly many Protestant denominations have abandoned this
understanding – even though the evidence for this identification is powerful and con-
victing. 3) Then Paul turns his attention to those who had quit their jobs and were
idle, because they thought, “Why work – when Christ will
return any day?” Paul urges them to work for the bread they eat – and if not – the
rest of the church should avoid them.
One final observation – when you read 2 Thessalonians you will notice that Paul of-
ten speaks about the enemies of the church. In this letter he also speaks about the
arch-enemy of the church – the Antichrist. The good news is that in Christ who will
come again we will overcome every enemy of the church.

PASTOR RECEIVES CALL TO LIVE IN INDIA

Last week Wednesday, Pastor
Mike received a call to serve as the future
Field Coordinator for India. The current
Field Coordinator, Mark Krueger, plans to
retire in the next couple of years. The
Coordinator oversees the mission work
our Synod does in India. He works with
two other missionaries and the national
pastors of CELM (Christ Evangelical
Lutheran Ministry), our national church in
India which has 9,500 souls in 126
congregations and 60 preaching stations.
The Field Coordinator is the Principal of the Seminary and Pre-Seminary in India
where seventy men are studying to be pastors. The wife of the Coordinator serves
as the overseer for the orphanages in India. He is being asked to “shadow” the
current Field Coordinator, Mark Krueger, until his retirement. Pastor Mike and Cathy
ask for your prayers as he deliberates this call.

WELS SUMMER STRINGS IN CONCERT - Today @ 3 p.m.

WELS Summer Strings, a 26-member
string orchestra with members ranging in age
from 10 to 84, will present their final concert
of the season today at 3 p.m. at St. John’s
Lutheran Church in Wauwatosa.
They will be joined by guest organist
Lynn Kozlowski. The concert will feature
settings of familiar hymns, selections by
Vivaldi, Pachelbel, Beethoven and Bach.
Adrian Smith and Linda Moeller are directors.

PLEASE DO NOT RETURN YOUR WORSHIP BULLETINS

We encourage you to take home your worship bulletins each week instead of re-
turning them to the ushers or placing them on the counter. There is so much infor-
mation in them - that we would hope you use them during the week for reviewing the
Bible passages, for checking the upcoming activities, or for sharing with a friend.
The bulletin is one of the best advertisements for your church. We make plenty of
bulletins for the services so there is usually no need to return them. If you missed a
Sunday, you may also find the previous week’s bulletin on the kiosk in the Narthex.

ATTENTION, PARENTS! School Registration

This Wednesday @ 3-7 p.m.
Wouldn’t it be great if our children could learn about Jesus not only in the summer-
time with Vacation Bible School—but “all-year-round!” They can do “just that” by
registering them in our Lutheran Elementary School on Wednesday, August 4th from
3-7 p.m.. Many who have had this privilege regard it as priceless. It is so valuable,
you cannot put a dollar value on it. If you have questions or would enjoy more infor-
mation, call our principal, Mr. Harlan Pelischek at 563-5349.

ST. PAUL’S SCHOOL NEWSLETTER MAILED

the school for any added information, or to inquire about registering your child for the
2010-2011 school year. We are looking forward to a great year!

“WHERE YOUR TREASURE IS, THERE YOUR HEART WILL BE ALSO”

This bible verse from Matthew 6:21, is the St. Paul’s new school theme for the
2010-2011 school year. This verse is from Matthew 6:21, a passage from our Lord’s
Sermon on the Mount. May this be our guide and norm for the entire school year.
The entire faculty returns. The school begins a new Science series in K-8. Grade 5-
6, like grades 7-8, will begin their day at 7:45 a.m. K-4 begins their day at 8:00 a.m.

PART 2 - FROM OUR WESTERN WISCONISN DISTRICT CONVENTION

§ Dr. Siegbert Becker’s book, Wizards that Peep,

has been reprinted. Many might remember
this book describing Occult activities. It
serves as an “eye-opener” to what can and
does happen when people are not being led
by the Holy Spirit through the Word of God.
It’s available at our Northwestern Publishing
House.

§ Dr. Lange’s Doctrine Book, God So Loved the World, has been translated into Man-
darin Chinese and is now being used in China to help Chinese Christians to have a
better grasp on the truths of God’s Holy Word.

§ Mission work today is filled with more possibilities than ever before. Not only does
our world with 6.8 billion inhabitants confront us with the largest mission field known
to man, but God has made possible new ways of delivering his message to these
oceans of humanity. Globalization, new technologies, increased travel, and ethnic
families that keep close ties though living in many different countries – all such de-
velopments have greatly blurred the distinction between domestic and international
mission work and have spurred collaboration and partnership in reaching the lost.
(Quoted from our Wisconsin Synod Missions Report to our District Conven-
tion)

§ Our Wisconsin Synod Campus Ministry keeps in touch with 8,500 WELS college stu-
dents. (Do we have your college student’s name and address, so that they
might receive these wonderful materials?) Literature is sent to help them see
their part in the mission Jesus has given to every Christian, even as they study for
their life’s vocation. Between 12 and 14% of the students in our American colleges
are from foreign countries. Campus ministries are reaching out to these international
students and training those converted to the Christian faith for reaching out to those
in their native lands.

§ Praise God for the awesome efforts to help out a new WELS congregation in Milford,
Iowa. A sister church in Spirit Lake, Iowa helped them purchase a beautiful ELCA
church building. The Manitowoc WELS Kingdom Workers Chapter sponsored 30
WELS teens to go to Milford, canvass for and teach a very successful Vacation Bible
School. The New Ulm, Minn. WELS Kingdom Workers Chapter sponsored a bus of
70 OWLS (Organization of WELS Lutheran Seniors) to go and canvass the entire
community of Milford, Iowa in one day. Wow! What blessings!
