EEL 6486 – Electromagnetic Theory

MIDTERM EXAM

12 October 2016

Instructions:

This is a closed book, closed notes test.

NO CALCULATORS.

All work is to be completed by the individual ALONE.

All tables, graphs and equations that you need are included in this booklet.

There are 4 problems plus an extra credit problem. Each problem has multiple sections. Check to ensure that
you have all 9 pages. All work, calculations and drawings you produce while working on this exam must be placed on the
pages provided in this exam booklet to receive full or partial credit. Your final answer for each section must be clearly
marked (when appropriate, put a box around it).

Good luck!

Problem # Total Points Score

1 25 ______

2 25 ______

3 25 ______

4 25 ______

Extra Credit 5 ______

Be sure to show ALL appropriate units for full credit.

Good luck, you should have plenty of time…

Vectors shown as BOLD text

1. Maxwell’s Equations

a) (5 pts) Write down Maxwell’s Equations in both point and integral form:

Point Form Integral Form

b) (10 pts) Derive the 1D wave equation for a horizontally polarized EM wave (i.e., E = EYY).
c. (10 pts) An important concept that was proposed by Maxwell allows us to understand current flow in a capacitor.
Please name this concept, show where it is included in Maxwell’s equations and describe briefly it.
3. (25 pts). Transmission Lines

(a) (10 pts). What is the impedance that a wave generator sees when driving a 75 ohm coaxial cable that is
connected to a 50 ohm load? You can leave your answer in equation form if you wish.

b) (10 pts) What is the percentage of the voltage wave that is absorbed by the load?

c. (5 pts). Besides the power absorbed by the load where does the rest of the power go and why?
4. Plane Waves in Free Space

(a) (5 pts) Sketch the E and H field vectors for a plane wave propagating in the z direction. Assume vertical polarization.
Label the axes (that was easy ).

(b) (5 pts). How would you calculate the wave power and in what direction is power transferred?

(c) (10 pts) What is the difference between refraction and diffraction? List one example in nature of each phenomenon.

(e) (5 pts) A plane wave propagates as shown and interacts with an aperture. You are looking down at the situation

Aperture

Slot aperture Hole aperture

The apertures are shown on the right for reference.

What type of wave results from a slot aperture? _______________________

What type of wave is diffracted by a square (or circular) hole? ________________________

Extra Credit 

A plane wave is propagating in space and encounters a series of dielectric slabs. How would you solve the problem? Be
sure to support your answer with either equations or sketches. Hint – I like sketches 
