Fortunately, dogs are expressive creatures and dog owners often
have a good idea what their dogs like because of the way they respond
to signals. Dogs that start to race around the house when someone says
‘walk’ are showing us with their enormous increase in unnecessary
activity that they are very enthusiastic about what generally happens
after someone says ‘walk’. The decisions dogs make when two good
things are available and they have to choose between them tells us
about their preferences. The crinkle of a bag of treats being opened is
often enough to convince a dog to come away from something they are
barking at, whereas the promise of an ear scratch might not be enough
to lure them.

Some reinforcers we prepared earlier

Every dog is an individual, which means we should not assume they
all have the same reinforcers. Some dogs are intensely interested in
interacting with humans, while others are expected to be aloof
towards humans (e.g. many sight-hound breeds). The sight-hounds
along with some small and delicate breeds (e.g. toy breeds) also tend to
be sensitive rather than clumsy, so may prefer gentle interactions and
dislike boisterous play. Nonetheless, there are some stimuli that are
good bets as reinforcers for most dogs.

Food
Using food to reinforce dogs for desired behaviour often is a great way
to encourage more desired behaviour, particularly with dogs that are
on the independent side. When we want to let a dog know he has done
really well, we can pay out big with a jackpot. Making the jackpot
something novel and/or very tasty, or giving several pieces while
