Introduction

The network version of the CDEGS software must be installed in two stages. Naturally, the workstation
portion of the software must be installed at the user site. The server portion must be installed, by a
network administrator, on the host server.

Server Installation (Windows NT)

Driver Installation

The Sentinel System Drivers provide a communication path between the protected application and the
Sentinel key. The driver you install depends on the operating system you are using. It must be the first
component installed. Without it, the client component cannot be installed since communication with the
key is required during installation for license verification.

The readme file in the \tools\netinel\drivers describes the installation procedures for all Sentinel System
Drivers. See the appropriate section for the detailed procedure about the driver that you are installing.
Please note that the information contained in the readme file was written for installation from diskette
media and is supplied “ as is ” from the developer.

Note: administrative privilege is required to configure the NT driver.

The simplest way to do the installation is to launch the AutoDetect setup program. It will detect the
operating system and launch the appropriate install program. To execute the program, Select "Run" from
the Taskbar and run the file SETUP.EXE in the \tools\netinel\drivers directory of the CDEGS CD-ROM.

SETUP.EXE is a 16 bit Windows program designed to detect the active OS, and launch the appropriate
Sentinel System Installation program. SETUP will be able to launch the OS/2, Win3x, Win9X, Win
NT(Intel), Win NT(PowerPC), and Win NT(Alpha) installers.

In order for this launching program to work correctly the directory structure must be maintained. That is,
setup.exe must be in the parent directory for all the other installer you wish to support.

Service installation (Windows NT)

This version of the NetSentinel security server is implemented as a Windows NT service which allows the
server application to be automatically started whenever the Windows NT operating system is running. It
supports NetBIOS, NetBEUI, NWLink (Microsoft IPX/SPX compatible protocol) and TCP/IP protocols.

This section provides the following information about the NetSentinel NT Service:

• Installation/Operating Instructions
• To install the NetSentinel NT service.
• To specify command line options.
• To start the NetSentinel NT service
• To uninstall the NetSentinel NT service
• To display the software version
• Service Event Logging
• Operating Environment

INSTALLATION/OPERATION INSTRUCTIONS

Before running NetSentinel NT service, the service must be installed into the system. All required files
mentioned below, for NT, are available on CD-ROM in the \tools\netinel\server\Win32 folder. Other
servers for different operating systems are available in the \tools\netinel\server folder. Simply open the
readme file, in that folder, for full explanation.

To install the NetSentinel NT service (General):

• NSSRVICE.EXE must be copied to the Windows NT %SystemRoot%\System32 directory to ensure

the accessibility of the file during the service start up.

• To install the service, run the NSSRVICE.EXE executable with "/I" option, i.e. NSSRVICE /I .

• After installation, a registry entry for NetSentinel service is created under

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services

• By default, the service is setup to run automatically the next time you reboot your Windows NT
system. No user logon is required, unless desired.

To install the NetSentinel NT service – CDEGS

The CDEGS installation is the same as the method above except that more switches are required to enable
the server to function. The “/I” is, of course, the install request. The “/DN:SES” is required to uniquely
identify the SES key over the network. The “/MS:1” is added to denote that there is only 1 SES key
available on the network (seen as SES0). Other options can optionally be added.

CDEGS required installation : NSSRVICE /I /DN:SES /MS:1

To specify command line options:

In addition, the following command line options can be used to specify options for the server application:

/DN:string - Changes the server's department name.

/H:num - Sets the maximum number of licenses that can be in use at any one time on this server.
/MS:num - Sets the maximum number of servers allowed.
/N:string - Sets the name displayed by the monitor for this server.
/ST - Enables strict timeout enforcement.
/SN:num - Sets the maximum NetBIOS sessions.
/SW:num - Sets the maximum NWLINK sessions.
/SI:num - Sets the maximum TCP/IP sessions.
/SL:num - Sets the maximum number of sub-licenses.
/BI:num - Overrides TCP/IP default broadcast mask (255.255.255.255).
/RI:num - Sets number of times to retry finding the specified Rainbow TCP/IP Server.
/TI:num - Timeout value used when attempting to locate other Rainbow TCP/IP Servers.
/W:string - Specifies handle delete password.
/? - Displays help screen.

Specified options, if any, take effect the next time the service is started.

To start the NetSentinel NT service:

3
After the service has been properly installed, you may reboot your system to start the NetSentinel NT
service automatically at system boot time. You can also use either the NET command or the Service
applet in the Control Panel to manually control the service.

• To use the NET command method, type the following commands at the command prompt:

NET START NETSENTINEL - Starts the service.

NET STOP NETSENTINEL - Stops the service.

• To use the Service applet in Control Panel:

1. From the Control Panel, select Services. The Services dialog box appears.
2. Select NetSentinel service.
3. Press the Start or Stop button to start or stop the NetSentinel NT service.

To uninstall the NetSentinel NT service:

1. Log onto the workstation if you haven't already done so.

2. Stop the NetSentinel NT service using either the NET command method or the Services applet as
described earlier.

3. Run the NSSRVICE.EXE executable with "/U" option, i.e. NSSRVICE /U, to uninstall the service.

4. The registry entry for NetSentinel service under

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services will be removed after uninstall.

To display the software version:

Run the NSSRVICE.EXE executable with "/V" option, i.e. NSSRVICE /V.

SERVICE EVENT LOGGING

Status information pertaining to this service is reported to the application log. Upon successful startup of the
service, information such as server version, protocol stacks, and available keys is logged as two separate events in
the application log. Please access Event Viewer in the Administrator Tools group to view this information.

OPERATING ENVIRONMENT

Support Windows NT Version 3.5, 3.51, and 4.0.

4
Un-Install the Server Components

The un-installation of the server components is quite straightforward. The following describes the procedure in
three easy steps. All this can be done through Command Prompt or “Run” from the task bar.

Example:
Firstly, you must stop the service. - type “NET STOP NETSENTINEL”
Secondly, you must un-install the service. - type “NSSRVICE /U”
Thirdly, you must un-install the driver using the CDROM. - Go to \tools\netinel\drivers\
- type “SETUP /U”

The server is now clean of all drivers and services for the protection key.

License Monitor Utility

The NetSentinel Windows Monitor program, WINMON, allows you to view the status of all NetSentinel servers
and their keys, products, and users.

The program consists of two utilities: NetSentinel Monitor and Edit Monitor Map. The NetSentinel Monitor
utility provides an overview of all servers, keys, products, and users. You can view the last access time per user
and release licenses from users. Note that you may establish a password to restrict the use of the ‘release license
feature’.

In addition, the NetSentinel Monitor utility provides a detailed view of servers, products, and keys through the
View by Servers, Products, and Users table.

The monitor program can be customized to your application through the Edit Monitor Map utility. You may
identify the servers by name and protocol, and map to individual keys, products, and/or users. In addition, the
licenses and products shown in your monitor may have been customized by your developer.

The WINMON program runs on a 32-bit Windows workstation. However, the program can communicate with
DOS, OS/2, NLM, Windows 95, and Windows NT servers.

For a more detailed explanation of the WINMON utility read the document MONITOR.DOC, located in the
\tools\netinel\monitor\Win32 folder on the CDEGS CD-ROM. The utility is also located in this folder.
