Many thanks to Penwiper for allowing me to share this pattern which was inspired by & adapted
from her awesome EXTERMIKNIT! - www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/extermiknit’
Yarn: 4ply (fingering / sock yarn) less than 50g each of - main colour (I used red) - optional
contrast colour (I used black) - and a small amount of white 8ply (DK) for the eye bobbles.
Tension / Gauge: 2.5cm (1inch) = 8sts and 10rows on 2.75mm (US1) needles
Notions: If you decide to make the eye stalk on the hat you will need 1 pipe-cleaner (wired
chenille stick) about 18cm (7inch) long.
Note: This costume was knitted in the round using the jogless join method described at
http://techknitting.blogspot.com If you would prefer to knit it flat, I guess you could just add
an extra stitch at each end of the chart to use as a seam allowance.

HAT:
Using 2.75mm (US 2) (Aus/Can/NZ 12) needles – CO 60
1-27: Work the stitches of the hat chart twice across all the rows.
28: option a (without eye-stalk): p12, eye bobble using white DK and 4mm (US 6)
needles, in main colour and 2.75mm (US 2) needles p22, eye bobble as before, p12
option b (with eye-stalk): p12, eye bobble using white DK and 4mm (US 6) needles,
in main colour and 2.75mm (US 2) needles p10, YO, p2tog, p10, eye bobble as
before, p12
29-37: Repeat all the sts of the hat chart twice across all the rows.
Break yarn. Using a yarn needle, thread the yarn end through the remaining stitches, pull
closed, and sew in the loose end.
Sew in the other ends. Wrap the top of your girl’s head in plastic, wash the hat and place it
on her head to dry. (Or I guess you could use a similar sized ball, or make one by stuffing
some plastic bags inside another one.)

EYE-STALK (optional)
You can either knit it flat, wrap it around one end of the pipe-cleaner, and sew it together
to make a tube. Or knit it around the pipe-cleaner using DPNs, and I-chord for the
narrowest sections.
Knit on 4mm (US 6) (Aus/Can/NZ 8) needles using 4 strands of main colour held
together –
1: co 3 sts
2-7: ss, turning at end of each row
8-9: k & p into each st & turn
10: k across & turn
11: p2tog across & turn
12: k2tog across & turn
13-14: ss, turning at end of each row
15: k &p into each st
16: k across
17: k &p into each st
18: k across
19: p2tog across. Cast off
Fold over the last cm / half inch of the pipecleaner at each end. This is so that there are no
sharp ends.
If you knitted the eye-stalk flat, wrap it around one end of the pipe-cleaner and sew it into a
tube. (The ‘eye bobble’ should be at the very end, with pipecleaner poking out from the
narrow part of the stalk)
Push the free end of the pipe cleaner through the YO on the hat.
Sew the end of the eye-stalk securely into place.
Bend the pipe cleaner so it fits neatly over your girl’s head.
