1. Reaction to the movie.

- The movie shutter island was good. The plot of the story is deep, without

studying or having a background in psychiatry or psychiatric nursing. You wont

be able to see certain things in the movie. you wont realize some things. But after

watching the movie the second time. And having started studying psychiatric

nursing I saw some symptoms, cues that are not obvious when I watched it the

first time. The movie has an eerie feeling about it. The things that have been

shown in the movie like the asylum or the therapies that were introduced was

very different from what I viewed things in a mental institute should be. But

nevertheless the movie was good for medicine students. Because the movie

shows how and what patients in the nursing institutes behave, act and do things.

2. How could you relate the movie to our subject?

- The movie is in every part related to our subject. The movie shows how to

handle psychiatric patients. The movie also shows new ways on how to handle

patients in the mental institute. The movie also helps psychiatric students on how

to assess psychiatric patients. The movie gives out cues, signs and symptoms

that show what mental disorder the patient has. The things the nurses do are

things that we future nurses must also do in order to handle patients that have

mental disorders. The movie also shows a mental institute that is different from

mental institutes in the Philippines. Showing how mental institutes are different

from one another. The movie was related to our subject in these aspects.
3. Was the movie helpful?

- The movie is very helpful for us psychiatric nursing students because the movie

shows how nurses must handle psychiatric patients. The movie also shows the

behavior of patients with mental disorders. Signs and symptoms that may help in

determining the mental disorder. The movie helps us nursing students in our

assessing skills. Making us attentive and observant in assessing patients. That

movie taught me that in assessing every thing may it be small or big we nursing

students must take note of the cues. Because everything the patient does has a

meaning. The movie also helped me in determining what causes mental

disorders. Mental disorders may be from past experiences or from traumatic

experiences. I realized that there are people who don’t have a long threshold for

pain and cannot cope with shocking experiences in their lives. Thus going into a

mental disorder and losing grip of reality.

4. What was the diagnosis for the main character?

- My diagnosis for the patient is Schizophrenia. While watching the movie the lead

actor showed signs of having schizophrenia. The patient was having delusions,

hallucinations. While he was talking to other patients and the staff the patient

also showed signs of being schizophrenic having disorganized speech. The

patient also showed signs of being withdrawn wanting to be alone rather than

having the help of his partner/ lead psychiatrist. Because of the patients
delusions he became paranoid. Being doubtful with everything. Not trusting

other people in the asylum. Showing signs of being restlessness and looking

around most of the time. His flashbacks also show that the patient has

schizophrenia. Having stressful experiences in the past, like being in the war and

witnessing the massacre of hundreds of people. And encountering a very

traumatic experience with his family, having lost his three of his children and

taking the life of his wife. Making him snap and loose track of reality.

5. Can you evaluate the asylum in terms of facilities?

- The asylum for me was a high standard mental institute. The mental asylum

gives the patients freedom to roam around the island. Making It easier for them

to live a life without having normal people making fun of them or harming them.

The island was adequate for patients with mental disorders because it is

secluded.

- The personnel were good. They were professionals following the orders of their

superiors and not disobeying orders. They also allowed patients to harm them

and not harming them back. Showing signs of professionalism. The personnel

followed in every part to help their lead patient. Showing care for the betterment

of their patient.
