ED2500C Lesson Plan

Grade Five Teacher Mr. Redpath

Subject Math Date June 10,2015
Unit Shapes and Measurement Topic Capacity

Students will:
Learning  Use direct and indirect measurement to solve problems
Objectives  Demonstrate an understanding of capacity by:
What do you want your
classmates to learn? - Describing the relationship between mL and L
- Measuring and recording capacity
Observe students:
 Measuring 3-D objects with given unit of measure
Assessment  Facilitating discussion of the exploration of capacity
How will you know your
classmates have learned?  Understanding the vocabulary surrounding capacity
 Estimating the size of container properly in relation to other
containers
Materials
What resources will you  Two liter bottle, coffee mug, rulers, water, pitcher, measuring cup,
need for your class popsicle sticks
presentation?

 Review what the class already knows about volume and how we
measure it with the formula V= LxWxH
 Give definition of capacity in regards to volume being 1cm3=1mL
 Ask where they have heard the word capacity before? What context
did they hear it then introduce mL and L
Introduction
 Explain activity – In 3 groups, estimate each container using ruler
and knowledge of volume then rank the order in which the highest capacity
to lowest then regroup and as a glass see how close they got by using the
measuring cup and water provided to see how many mL each container is
 Time : 3 minutes
 Ask one of the students to repeat the instructions back to me to
make sure the whole class understands
 Make the 3 groups from the popsicle sticks then give each group
there container to measure with a time limit of 2 minutes per container
 Walk through the groups as the measure and facilitate discussion on
techniques of estimating capacity
Body  Rotate containers every 2 minutes from group to group
 Pull group back together after 6 minutes and get each group to tell
me their estimation as well as order from least to greatest
 Have each group measure out the water needed for their final
containers, record on the board see how close every group got
 Time: 8-10 minutes

ED2500 – Orientation to Teaching
Instructor: Leonard Sproule
 Have the groups go back to their original spots then discuss where
we have seen people using the measures of capacity in real life and the
Closure
occupations which would use these every day
 Time: 2-3 minutes

 Program of study
Reference
 Bruce Lajeunesse handouts and knowledge
Materials
 Curriculum Lab oversized kits
