The self-less lady saint

The Alchemy of Affinity The Alchemy of Affinity

Preface
Everything in this world displays a degree of affinity to those
appealing to its inner nature. It is considered completely natural
for a nightingale to be attracted to the rose or for the bee towards
the hive.

The feeling of kinship may be based on economic, social or

political reasons. This collection is an attempt to explore and
express the spiritual aspect of Affinity between Man and the
Divine, and between humans inspired by the love of Divine.

I dedicate this humble collection to the lady saint Rabia

Basri, whose life and words have always inspired me since
my college days.

My sincere gratitude to my friend Muneer AK, who helped me

with the proof-reading and my brother Abdul Haseeb for his
tireless support. My parents for their kind guidance and prayers.
My wife for being there for me. Friends and well-wishers of
JAIHOON.COM scattered worldwide.

His Nearness, our Paradise

Rabia Basri’s reply to Jaihoon

Rabia Basri is a well-known lady saint who lived in the city of

Basra, Iraq in the early stages of Islam. In her intense love of God,
she was more interested in meeting Him after death than entering
paradise or escaping hell.

Last night had I a dream

Close to real did it seem

Across the streets of Basra

Walking I in a state of doubt

My mind in pain was put

With Reason my heart was cut

Appeared then by my side

Who in His Love all nights cried

She saw the cloud in my eyes

As if faith’s sun not in me rose

“About paradise I am uncertain

Its blessings I cannot ascertain

Slaves of your stature, tell me

Why for paradise’ blessings no rapture?

For the inmates in His Book been promised

Drink of Honey and kiss of houri
The Alchemy of Affinity 2 The Alchemy of Affinity 3
But His lovers do not such desire We are those of sabiqoon band
Nor do they fear the Hell-fire Our greatest bliss to near Him stand

Why I find no mention of your like? The rest of comforts after that follow
Or did Lord forget those who Him like? Honey and houri are for us shallow

Tell me, O Rabia, O Jaihoon!

Lost in His aura We are of sabiqoon

If not of the Right Hand We worshipped Him for His sake

You belong to which band? He alone remained our joy and ache

Tell me O fearless saint You moved your heads and hands

Why His Book has not your count? In desire to fly as heaven’s birds

What is the reward for your love? For we lovers

Not houri, honey and rivers if you love” Suffices He

Feeling pity for my spiritual ignorance His nearness

She bestowed on me pearls of Him-awareeness Our Paradise”

“O the wise one fooled by the devil Note : This poem is set around the Sura Waqia, the 56th chapter of Quran.

Unfound What then of my Tasbih-
Who maddened me in His Love
Who blew into my soul air of Merciful Him
I have heard… Who made my life sweeter than I dreamt
In deserts are found mirages
In clouds are found rains
In paradise are found houris What then of my Tasbih-
Whose love eats my heart as cancer
I have heard… Cuts my nerves like thorn razor
With oracles are found secrets Freeze my blood as in a bitter freezer
In the garden are found roses
Within the shell are pearls
What then of my Tasbih...
I have heard… No longer I ask Lord
Around the flame fly moths No more words can I afford
Rays lead to the Sun No paths left to tread
Shadow to its true being

I have heard... My life a feast of pain

Friends are with one another found For onlookers seem vapid joy
If one is nowhere seen I alone hear my silent moan
With other be found Love a crime in this lustful nation
I have heard...
If in reality be better Lips silent
At least in dream Heart in complaint
Life becomes sweet I wail with blind hope
‘O My Merciful Him’
What then of my Tasbih-
Who left my soul’s moon
Cleft in a state of doom
Shattered in pieces thousands

What then of my Tasbih-

Who is from me space far
Who disappeared since time long
Even in dream cares not to appear

Another paradise for the lovers Love me as much

Love me as such
As if angels be jealous
Love me as much Of your love, so zealous
Love me as such
As if we became the hive Love me as much
For bees who for love starve Love me as such
As if Lord has set aside
Love me as much Another paradise for the loved
Love me as such
As if we were a book O the mercy-filled wine
For the ignorant to look (at) To drink is fortune only mine
Love me…As if in the morrow
Love me as much You can love no more
Love me as such
As if in the garden
Were flowers we alone

Love me as much
===
Love me as such
To the dying is dear
A handful of water

Love me as much
Love me as such
As I stand by your side
Or into the earth I fade

Love me as much
Love me as such
As if a lover
Differ not from a martyr

A Plaint of Love My Heart without you, O Love-

Every day she makes a honey-like claim
cheeked one
‘About you do I think all the time’.
My heart without you
In pain beats
But as I pass through moments very silent With no joy
Then on my lips does arise heart’s plaint
My heart without you
‘Is it not possible for time some more Confused what to write
To spend for the one you utterly adore?’ Wandering as a lost kite

My heart without you

=== Even dreams look bad

Sleep seldom comes

My heart without you

Suffocated with solitude
Despised with own self

My heart without you

Love seems so unreal
Unable to feel

My heart without you

Feels so scared
Even to cry

My heart without you

Shuns the flowers
Miserable at your absence

My heart without you

No longer enjoy
The joys of life
The Alchemy of Affinity 10 The Alchemy of Affinity 11
My heart without you
Lines broken A Sweet Revenge Between two
Words incomplete lovers of God
O love-cheeked one!
O Friend!
My own shadow Lovers always secrecy choose
Seems strange Beloved alone their love knows
To me your presence
Alone was true friend Love is not to be in loose talked
Diamonds be kept in case locked
My heart without you
Sobs, tearless
Every nerve in me All that Lovers have is but love
Complains, annoys Wine, Wealth and women are-
For them but love
Drugged with your love
Intoxicated with passion A saint of His was once called
Without you beside By the king who in his time ruled
Death with me resides
Both knew each other well- For,
Time at me fun pokes
‘Hu’ was that in their hearts dwell
Solitude stone throws
Without you beside
A madman am I let loose For a long time they conversed
Till when it’s time to be dispersed
O love-cheeked one!
Joyless, The king in his joy announced
Lifeless, A secret till then was concealed
Without you
‘I’ am less. ‘This slave is much dear to ‘Hu’
This secret is known but to few

=== He stays awake,

While the world is asleep
The Alchemy of Affinity 12 The Alchemy of Affinity 13
He tries to make, The king heard the will of the bygone saint
Towards ‘Hu’ a further leap” And without a choice gave he the consent

The saint felt ashamed The king too was not second in love
About his secret revealed His heart like the saint to ‘Hu’ was turned

He swore to take revenge At once he realized the vengeance of love

One day his shame would he avenge The saint had settled the score before he did go

Days and nights passed None in the kingdom was of any merit
Months and years elapsed But the king, to lead the prayer of death

But his will remained the same O Friend

On the king would he bring a blame Lovers always secrecy choose
Beloved alone their love knows
On the fateful day when he died
A trick on the king he played Love is not to be in loose talked
Diamonds be kept in case locked
He wrote in his last will-
On who shall lead his funeral All that Lovers have is but love
Wine, Wealth and women are-
‘A slave of ‘Hu’ he is- For them but love
Never before Asr did he sunnah miss’
O Tasbih!
Those around worried I was damned from your presence
How shall he be buried Like Satan, expelled from paradise

Where would anyone find such a slave At least in dream appear

Elders and mullas took from there leave To remind me of His Love and fear

Every nook and corner they searched My Merciful..

Until when at the court the news reached How Merciful!
The Alchemy of Affinity 14 The Alchemy of Affinity 15
“My Merciful Him who loves me”
Vent of an Uprooted Tent
I say not a word more
Than what I said before What happened all these days
Whomto had I turned my face
The sweetness I got from your few words Why did I drink from cup else
I would repeat until death visits my beads When came over my soul these curls?

My faith’s tree fell upside down

Notes I forgot the way to His town

Hu : Lt. He, referring to God Without a living soul

I turned to a rock
Sunnah: Voluntary prayers (here) Even worms that crawl
Shunned my barren heart

=== I searched for the attributes of Adam

For, I could not recall nature of my being

I imitated the cry of a living man

But not a drop of tear in my eye came

My mind would not stay in a place

Jolting as a ferry caught in hurricane’s arms

I tried to cure my pain with ways diverse

I consumed with hope many kind of tonics

I pinned my hope on all but the true Cure

Who but Him could heal me for sure

I ran in shame from those who believed

(For), the stream of my heart elsewhere flowed
The Alchemy of Affinity 16 The Alchemy of Affinity 17
The hypocrite was more sincere in his deeds This beggar feels like a king
I failed to move the rosary at par with his beads When in your thought a tear I bring!

Not even in the dream could I hear But You,

The music of the Sage in rest at Lahore All love are in vain,
But You
While His slaves around danced All comforts are but pain
In the abundant rain of His mercy-
My cup was empty and broken But You,
Even tears flowed not to quench None but You”

I fell out of His Grace O Reader!

I hurt myself with sins! These are just lines of a hypocrite’s joy
They aren’t of any worth for you to enjoy
I did get much love from my folk
Their lips were busy with my talk Look not up to me for any lessons great
Wise ones ought not care for fools’ talk
But that did me no good
I starved for another food Leave me alone to rant and vent
The silly story of my uprooted tent
Though many envied my joyful face
I covered the dirt of my wretched soul

Tonight when I laid crying in sujud

His Compassion covered me in tears
===
I opened my heart’s wounds before Him
I begged for the cure with His Rahm

In secret and in joy did I wail

Such pain, my face turned pale-

“Ya Rabb! Where else to knock

But on the door of Malikul Mulk!
The Alchemy of Affinity 18 The Alchemy of Affinity 19
Jaihoon untied his bonded sorrows-
FORGET it For her to know
But for now...
FORGET it!!
My hand moved to call her
I rushed home from the busy world
I rubbed my blurred eyes...
But forget it
===
I danced in joy with your mirage
I enjoyed your face in sleep
I jumped while in my dream...
But forget it

I held the pillow close to heart

I held my breath...
But forget it

O compassionate Shirin!
Your Farhad is in pain!

O passionate Leila
Majnun’s gone pale, ah!

Your absence kills me-

Inch by inch
My soul suffers
Bit by bit

My senses shatter
One by one
If not by your presence,
Heal me by means else!

Nay, they are not.
His Friends: Between Two Lies Wali? Believe not!

The man on the street not easily finds The second lie is in fact
Hard is to hunt for those whom He befriends His true Friends’ smart tact

Pearls lie in the heart of the ocean When one asks them
Concerning His friendship
Who could risk their lives to gain (them)?
They disclaim such titles
And shun the world’s eyes
Shells are scattered on the shore to play
They come under the feet of the Time They hide their secret from everyone
And open their hearts to Him alone
Even So,
There are today shells which otherwise claim They lie to protect the Truth
They dress in colors to match the pearl’s gleam… And pray to protect their bond (with Him)

A saint of past once uttered He is hidden

Although His signs are spread bare
A truth that’s short-lettered
His friends too are hidden
But their tales are left for us to hear
‘Between two lies’
Said he about His Friends I give up! O my merciful Tasbih-
The man on the street not easily finds
O friend! Hard is to hunt for those whom He befriends
Shall I tell you about the twin lies-?
First about deception, Notes

How could I love you not? You and your love,
Beauty, grace and service-
All a ‘Mercy’ from Al Wadood
O light of my soul Then, how could I love you not?
On your shoulders I lay in rest
How could I love you not? Notes

O strength of my heart

You reassure me with confidence
How could I love you not?

O comrade of my soul
Even in the no-lie world beside me you wish to lie

Life more than dream beautiful became

They say Love makes one blind

But joy over joy did I in life find

Oh! I ask again and again

But no answer could I gain-

Love Unlimited O my love, O my Foe
I admit without the doubt slightest Those who have sense
Nothing like His Justice is as just And not lost in any craze
It is full of Mercy towards the sinner
It ignores many crimes big and minor Have said-

But ‘The one who gives you love is the beloved

There are limits defined for all The one who cause you pain is your enemy
‘Mizan’ saves the world from fall
Both are never the same
Our thoughts and actions are to be limited On their prey both cannot claim!’
Love and hate beyond it aren’t permitted
Were you the one
O my love-swelled beloved! Who blessed me with love?
My heart for you bleeds with compassion Are you the one
My veins dance in the rain of your passion Who such agony gives?

Love is indeed a blessed thing O the pair of my heart

It makes a beggar feel like a king O the coolness of my eyes
But this lover is drunk in your zealous craze
Unaware where to turn from (your thoughts) his face Your memories of years is blown like a tent
By the storm of separation lasting just a month
Will this fanatic be punished-
For this excess he committed ? So severe was the heat of your want
The rose for the nightingale was only granted- I am no longer that once-fertile land
With the command to refrain from Love Unlimited
Rains of joy shall dry in a moment
Notes The thirst sucks all from beneath

Mizan : The God-instilled scale which maintains the balance of life Dream is a window to see in reality one’s wishes
There is nothing dear to me than your presence

=== But even in dream I am robbed of your face

So pitiful is this wretched lover’s case
The Alchemy of Affinity 26 The Alchemy of Affinity 27
Ah! My senses are going weak Times five or more I pray,
Although in youth I am at peak Yet night is as painful as day
You too in your duas to Him say
Forgive if my talk passes beyond reason May your love’s victim alive stay
Hold me not captive for acts of treason

Reins of my mind are no longer with me

Tears never show any respect towards me ===
O my beloved who bathed me in love
O my enemy who wounded my heart

Draw closer to your lover and victim

Resolve my pain or I have my revenge

Be kind to this broken-hearted

Be generous to this soul-shattered

Time within walls of my room

Is crawling like a hesitant worm

Every moment I am counting

If towards me are you coming

Yet, my counting extends

I only find your absence

Name my cry as you please-

Love or craze
Possessive or Selfish
Or a helpless man’s weakness!

The Pain-Price of Love Lover can neither bear the pain of her memories
Nor walk away from the garden ignoring her scent
To each thing in this world
A price apt has He assigned With her thoughts his heart is a bleeding rose
Without her it becomes a thorny desert cactus
Nothing in life is gained free
The fruit is for those who strive up the tree To each thing in this world
A price apt has He assigned
O dear one.
Your thought aches my solitary heart Nothing in life is gained free
As if on my wound is rubbed salt The fruit is for those who strive up the tree

O dear one
Pray to lessen your sweet thoughts
Suffer me not as a mirror put between stones
===
But let not your prayer make me forget
That you remain no more in this lover’s heart
And I become as a dry wood
In the desert of this cruel world

Ah! Is Solitude the twin of Affinity?

This Pain-price for love is so hefty!

Love is a strange state of bewilderment -

Heart is lost between remembrance and forgetfulness

A Tale of Two Lights This Rose remained ignorant of its own smell
Until you sprinkled His Love on its petal

“One midnight as I looked through the window I became a wonder for my own self
A strange light did my attention draw I danced in love like in breeze moves a leaf

It shone like a faint bulb I wish not to steal your prized time
Even as I tried to my eyes rub I ask only to silently remain beside your song.”

I thought much about its origin Notes

Whether it was the work of man or jinn?
Fajr: The pre-dawn prayer
It pleased my eyes
I blinked not more than twice

Was it the distant stars in the sky-

Which twinkles at the command of the Most High?
===
After a while…
I witnessed the break of Fajr
And the left behind the light-wonder

I washed my face and hands well

And in the thought of Him I began to dwell

He filled my heart with another Light

Every worry and fear became feather-light

O my crazed nightingale
Who filled my life with melody

In your company I forgot what I did until then know

You taught me that His Worship is not devoid of love

Jaihoon’s Poetic Bowl Even if mine is gone,
Let one of their pilgrimage gain
O reader!
Take it from this little soul Mercy for my brethren filled my heart
A drop from Jaihoon’s poetic bowl In such a state I forgot my own want

A slave once cried along with others The Voice again spoke in Command
“Rabb! Accept my pilgrimage” said he in tears
Another marvel for them was at hand
He kept his hands raised to the skies
He wished for a reply to come for once “I am the Lord who created Compassion
If I feel not for them, ‘tis out of reason
Into his ears came the cry of his folks
They begged for the same favor as him My slave of your kind is to them so kind
How then can Your Creator do them offend?
He felt pity hearing their wail, (and thought)
‘Let their prayers win, even as mine fail’
If your heart beats for one slave’s hajj (to be accepted)
Came this Voice into his ears Lo! Be known that all your thousands’ do I hereby
“Why such a thought did you nurse?” acknowledge.”

The slave replied in a low tone O reader!

Why such a marvel had he shown Take it from this little soul
A drop from Jaihoon’s poetic bowl
“They have cried more than me
They have traveled to reach Your Home
He is the Ultimate Artist of this Universe
One after another, Who painted this world with eternal benevolence
They suffered with pain
No mother can show more love for her child
I feel pity for their every sacrifice As does the Creator shows for this trifle world
Their acceptance for me is suffice

If you ask me the proof of His Everlasting Mercy Lovers’ Tears Precious than
He let this sinner live to write such in a world so busy
Paradise’s Rivers
Now and then His thoughts pierce my veins
I become alive and His Love fills my half-corpse O Tasbih!

The joy and pain of His lovers are shown

I wonder at my own image in the mirror
Only to the One who in their hearts rein
I see the world with new hue and color
They can suffer no other plight
His Beloved’s greetings dance on my lips
By Him alone can they delight
While joy fills the heart caged between the ribs
Last night two slaves gathered

=== As their silent prayer I overheard

“Give us not the pain of this world

But the pain of Your Merciful Love

Let your Love be our constant cry

Save us from the bread-only hurry

Ya Hayy!
Ya Qawiyy!
O Most high!
O our heart’s sigh!

O the stone of our souls’ ring-

Our tears are but Your Spring

The drops that on our cheeks run

Are dearer than the rivers in the heaven
The Alchemy of Affinity 36 The Alchemy of Affinity 37
Suffice to us Your do’s
Save us from Your Don’ts
Dead or Alive: You alone tell me
We bow Without Your remembrance
We pray Without Your Beloved’s love
We say Am I dead or alive
But by Your sway! You alone tell me

Take not back this fortune I asked this question

Make us not like lifeless stone To my own soul
Ashamed and embarrassed
We worshipped day and night It failed to answer my call
Not for once You came to sight
O who brought me to this world
Never did we make a demand Separating me from your Merciful Being
That Your vision come to hand Let this corpse-like sinner for tonight live-
With Your thoughts and beloved’s love
Our hearts simply believed
The words of Your Beloved I am alive
If in my heart Your thoughts are alive
Your Signs evident all over I am alive
Your Self apparent nowhere If in my veins reverberates Madina’s song

Yet we call, For a few days as I swam at ease

In the waters of those beside the two
Ya Hayy! All the light in me eroded
Ya Qawiyy! My faith crumbled and corroded
O Most high!
O our hearts’ sigh! Without Your remembrance
Without Your Beloved’s love
The drops that on our cheeks run Am I dead or alive
Are dearer than the rivers in the heaven You alone tell me

Striking Stones of Spirit to emit Every ignorant hypocrite has days of faith
Didn’t these lines fall in Jaihoon’s fate?
His Fire
Therefore,
“Life means a passionate burning, an urge to make, Keep to your self the stones of spirit
To cast in the dead clay the seed of heart.” For, they shall one day Sinai-like fire emit

O friends who carry the stones And if you strike them like al Musthafa-
Striking each other to create sparks That Sweet Beloved of Lord-

Would you throw them to the mire
If after a try or two they make no fire? Greater will be the fire from Mount of Nur

Sweet Love, Bitter death! Death makes the love go sour
It knocks uninvited on lovers’ door

Love is a sweet and selfless feeling The heart then thinks of none but its own,
Before the beloved, the heart is kneeling Not even the one to whom it has love shown.

Lives are given even before its request He is ready to die first,
Lovers may jump to fire if faced with test But not suffer in her separation first.

‘Your wish is my command’, O reader!

says the lover Sweet love, bitter death-
With the heart in his hand. Who dare deny this truth?

‘Anything and everything you say Notes

My soul is in your sweet sway’

“O sweet one. Prior to your death,

Let me be placed below the earth ===

You have no time for Him,
Not more than few minutes you give Him.
Distance in Love
For hours you sleep, The days of Sun and Mon pass by,
For days and nights you work, But the kite of your memories still flies high
For months you strive for paying bills,
For years you save penny until death, O coolness of my eyes!
But for just moments you turn towards Him. O the warmth of my heart!

You are ready to waste your life in traffic, Even as I hide my pain absorbed
But stingy when it comes to His worship. In the world of zeroes and ones
My heart aches all the more
You take a break for Him from your busy work To see your compassionate smile
All my life I forgot to even a minute Him overlook
The heart translates its pain into tears,

Not Anymore! A Believer lives like ship ‘on’ the
Everything in life has a limit
water
The climb has to stop at mount’s summit
May I relate a wonderful incident-
Tasbih! I have cried enough, There lived in a town a Him-fearing merchant
Now I deserve to laugh
A man came running to him from another town
Your love has so far made me mad And told,
Now return the senses which I before had “Your ship in waters has gone down”

Your separation won me everyone’s pity The merchant looked down for a while
Now sit beside to arouse their envy And then said with smile “Al hamdu lillah”!
I burnt like coal in the furnace of thought
After some time came to him another news
Now fondle my deeds in the garden of action
“The ship that sank was not yours”!
Beauty that runs in the streets
Like an untamed beast Again, he looked down for a while
Show me the same when His Fear And then said with smile “Al hamdu lillah”!
Binds it with strings modest
The people around were struck by surprise
Pour into my heart What was this secret, they could not appraise
The honey of Affinity
Not any more can I bear They wondered why his reply for both was same
My soul’s complaint of friend empty! For the first one, ‘Inna lillah’ why he didn’t exclaim?

I can bear no sad affair

When I found it was like before still calm I can see no one suffer

But when water enters inside the ship You are so blessed to have a kind heart
A hue that is most lacking in life’s colorful art

Men and women are no longer compassionate
A believer lives in this world About their own wealth they are passionate

Do you write in Solitude? Familiarity : Poison for Affinity
My sweet beloved asked me last night An eager stranger asked me yesterday
‘Is it in solitude that you like to write?” Your friend and mentor do you meet everyday?

I smiled seeing the look in her curious eyes

I did not wait for a single moment
‘Coz the sailor rides gazing at the star in the skies
A reply I gave at the same instant-
Jaihoon flows in the hope of the Ultimate Sea
Without Affinity, the falcon turns an owl unable to see “No. Why would one want to meet?
Those who are always in their heart
I said, The purpose of meeting is to remind
About the ones they leave behind
“I live in the present times
In my song word and deed rhymes
Seeing dear ones everyday breeds familiarity
I am not fond of idle dreams The wise ones said it is a poison for Affinity!
I build my ends with practical means
Others make an effort to remember their loved ones
Little do I like to complain The beloved’s image they fix on the walls of their homes.
I speak the truth clear and plain Ah! But this fool is seeking an excuse to forget
Although he shivers of cold wrapped in the solitary jacket
What to gain of talking about worlds other?
I am the bud of today, about yesterday why bother?”
In every worldly crowd I go
My voice began to rise higher in tone Their memories in me flow
Although to listen around was my beloved alone
When alone I am like the sunburnt sand dunes
She kept looking at me in silence With them, I become the evergreen Hind full of springs
As if for her eyes I gave much coolness.

===
Yes. Blessed are my eyes to have met them once
But my soul weeps parted I am from them since”
The Alchemy of Affinity 90 The Alchemy of Affinity 91
What is the remedy for this never-ending pain? Don’t leave me in the dark!
For how long shall I wait for Affinity’s train?
O dear flame. Don’t leave me in the dark
Bead by bead, O Rabb, since when I have been joining
For the devil’s forces upon me to stalk
But again and again why is my Tasbih still breaking?
I know you have a Him-fearing kind heart
You’ve been so generous to me since start

=== If you desert me in this confusing age

Where will I run to seek a pious refuge

My friend. Not in this dark me you leave

Who else will guide me towards His Love

Shall I bury my face among the penny papers?

Or indulge myself in the world of virtual cables?

Have you wondered what will happen to this moth?

In your absence he shall become another dead sloth

Drown me not with so much pain

Show me that you care as little as a grain

I shiver of cold in the bazaar of the beasts

What appears as candy is in real bitter taste

Men and women have become madly blind

With greed, their souls have they left behind

I see nothing but pitch darkness around

In hind and Hijaz I see only evils abound
The Alchemy of Affinity 92 The Alchemy of Affinity 93
All I need is a ray of Him Loving flame Without you I can bear any amount of pain,
Ah! Even if I am burnt have I no blame. But not the joy, which my success brings

Be a little kind to this little being Of what value is that joy

Plenty are the fortunes that he can bring Unable to share, makes you cry

In your absence my wings become weak Imagine the pain and regret of a shallow well
Without His fearful tears dry is my cheek
When His rain comes plenty, but it can’t have all
Now when I silently raise my head to the sky
My heart is small, it cannot contain much
Even before speaking a word I begin to cry
When the cup is to its full, it outflows
He hears me weep
He sees my heart deep For many years I ran east and west in His search
Within days you taught me in my heart is His reach
He knows how much sincere hope I keep
And what my heart whispers while I sleep Then I called Him the creator of the earth and sky
‘O My Merciful Him who loves me’ is now my cry
O My Tabrez. O My Tasbih!
Why to be so rude, o slave of Al Wadood?
Tell me a little more about that Merciful Him Why leave me to suffer in the solitude?
My heart is not content listening to you in dream
O dear flame. Don’t leave me in the dark
If you have wounded me partly with His Love- For the devil’s forces upon me to stalk
Take the sword and complete the story.
I have nothing else in this world to look at
For, it pains more for a lover’s heart to bleed
Our Ummah has become a stock to mock at
Give me not a book, but teach me how to read

O dear flame. Don’t leave me in the dark It cannot know the friend from the foe
For the devil’s forces upon me to stalk And talk matters big to make a show

Leave me not alone in solitude to perish I do not wish to put anyone in blame
Do everything else, but not like this punish What do I have for any difference to claim
The Alchemy of Affinity 94 The Alchemy of Affinity 95
In such a state, why me you desert
Alone in His Way, how shall I exert?
No Shame, Him you blame!
You showed me a world beyond books The other day my treasured friend I eagerly approached
His fear issued from your humble looks To relate news which my ears had just then fetched

My heart was heavy with the sad news

Now I come across learned sages
Nothing around could cause me to amuse
Who have learned numerous pages
I said,
Ah! But what is the use
His Love in me they can’t arouse
“Did you know about the bloody quake?
And the thousands of lives it did cruelly take?
O dear flame. Don’t leave me in the dark
For the devil’s forces upon me to stalk Houses are down, bridges are broken
The entire earth below them are shaken
I shall not stop my complaint
Until with it you shall acquaint! What a fate has upon them fallen
Their land with great misery is swollen”
May Allah grant you a thousand years more
To Love and fear Him more than ever before While I impatiently vent all my shock
My friend with silence did towards me look
Notes
And when I finished my hurried talk
Al Wadood: most loving. one of the 99 names of God A few sweet words my friend did unlock

In His way how shall I exert: The literal meaning of jihad is to ‘exert’. “How Merciful is my Him
Who is so patient with our zulm

=== He bears for long with the crimes of we humans

Looking for a chance to grant us forgiveness

But when all the limits are crossed

His judgment comes to be passed.
The Alchemy of Affinity 96 The Alchemy of Affinity 97
Thus when his punishment finally arrives
Not even the innocent one survives.
I would have loved you most, IF...
Yet how could you accuse His Mercy O the gift of God!
Knowing well how much Him I fancy Who shouted aloud
The word of love
Don’t you have any sense or shame In my silent world
To doubt His Mercy and put on Him blame
O the cool breeze
When it is time of day, you forget to praise Who moved the dark clouds
But when night falls, Him you criticize” Away from my sun
And brought colors
My heart was heavy with the sad news
Nothing around could cause me to amuse
To love you not in return
Would amount to a sin
Hearing these words I got more sad
Thinking about Him I had a feeling bad
I would have loved you most
I thanked Him for what I sadly learnt If in love there were no tears
From the company of Him-Loving Friend. And to lose it had I no fears

I would have loved you most

=== If to earn the bread was easy

And have all needs met hastily

I would have loved you most

If there had been no end
And life be on earth all spent
I would have loved you most
If there was no life in world next
And for my deeds were no count

I would have loved you most

The Alchemy of Affinity 98 The Alchemy of Affinity 99
If for love was no price to pay If any beside Him could defeat
For, every joy comes with a cry In the race to the station of great

I would have loved you most I would have loved you most
If you could stop me die If I could write a word
And hold me to cheeks nigh To ignore him could I afford

I would have loved you most

I would have loved you most
If I could love him not
If you would with me play And I become naught
In the gloomy grave as I lay
I would have loved you most
I would have loved you most If my life had a sweet moment
If I was certain of my fate Without his mention I make a comment
To get close to paradise’ gate
I would have loved you most
I would have loved you most If my soul ever smiled
If there were none beside And his praise I failed
But we in this world to reside
Ah!
I would have loved you most I would have loved him most
I would have loved you less
Had Lord not called
I would have loved others least
Mustafa His Beloved

I would have loved you most

If that Beloved not lured
The two worlds to his beauty
===
I would have loved you most
Had sun and stars withstood
The light of his Prophethood

I would have loved you most
