Preface
Everything in this world displays a degree of affinity to those
appealing to its inner nature. It is considered completely natural
for a nightingale to be attracted to the rose or for the bee towards
the hive.
Why I find no mention of your like? The rest of comforts after that follow
Or did Lord forget those who Him like? Honey and houri are for us shallow
“O the wise one fooled by the devil Note : This poem is set around the Sura Waqia, the 56th chapter of Quran.
Your heart with no love turned sterile It is especially referring to verses, And those Foremost (in Faith) will be
Foremost (in the Hereafter). These will be those Nearest to Allah (verse
A truth known to this unlearned old lady 10,11). Sabiqoon, or the foremost ones, are those who prefer and crave for
Why for your young wisehead turned not handy? the closeness to Allah than the blessings in paradise.
Reason : The arrogant Intellect of man influenced by Satan as opposed to
Have you really read His Book? Heart which is full of faith in God
Or cast a ritual hasty look?
Love me as much
===
Love me as such
To the dying is dear
A handful of water
Love me as much
Love me as such
As I stand by your side
Or into the earth I fade
Love me as much
Love me as such
As if a lover
Differ not from a martyr

The saint felt ashamed The king too was not second in love
About his secret revealed His heart like the saint to ‘Hu’ was turned
Days and nights passed None in the kingdom was of any merit
Months and years elapsed But the king, to lead the prayer of death
O compassionate Shirin!
Your Farhad is in pain!
O passionate Leila
Majnun’s gone pale, ah!
My senses shatter
One by one
If not by your presence,
Heal me by means else!

Nay, they are not.
His Friends: Between Two Lies Wali? Believe not!
The man on the street not easily finds The second lie is in fact
Hard is to hunt for those whom He befriends His true Friends’ smart tact
Pearls lie in the heart of the ocean When one asks them
Concerning His friendship
Who could risk their lives to gain (them)?
They disclaim such titles
And shun the world’s eyes
Shells are scattered on the shore to play
They come under the feet of the Time They hide their secret from everyone
And open their hearts to Him alone
Even So,
There are today shells which otherwise claim They lie to protect the Truth
They dress in colors to match the pearl’s gleam… And pray to protect their bond (with Him)
O rose of my garden no-lie world : The world of barzakh (the interval between death and
You are prayers-full from head to toe resurrection). No lie would be tolerated in the grave-life
How could I love you not?
Al Wadood : Most Loving, referring to God
O coolness of my eyes
Your bosom radiates with love and care
How could I love you not?
O strength of my heart
===
You reassure me with confidence
How could I love you not?
O comrade of my soul
Even in the no-lie world beside me you wish to lie
How could I love you not?
Mizan : The God-instilled scale which maintains the balance of life Dream is a window to see in reality one’s wishes
There is nothing dear to me than your presence
O dear one
Pray to lessen your sweet thoughts
Suffer me not as a mirror put between stones
===
But let not your prayer make me forget
That you remain no more in this lover’s heart
And I become as a dry wood
In the desert of this cruel world
“One midnight as I looked through the window I became a wonder for my own self
A strange light did my attention draw I danced in love like in breeze moves a leaf
It shone like a faint bulb I wish not to steal your prized time
Even as I tried to my eyes rub I ask only to silently remain beside your song.”
O my crazed nightingale
Who filled my life with melody
A slave once cried along with others The Voice again spoke in Command
“Rabb! Accept my pilgrimage” said he in tears
Another marvel for them was at hand
He kept his hands raised to the skies
He wished for a reply to come for once “I am the Lord who created Compassion
If I feel not for them, ‘tis out of reason
Into his ears came the cry of his folks
They begged for the same favor as him My slave of your kind is to them so kind
How then can Your Creator do them offend?
He felt pity hearing their wail, (and thought)
‘Let their prayers win, even as mine fail’
If your heart beats for one slave’s hajj (to be accepted)
Came this Voice into his ears Lo! Be known that all your thousands’ do I hereby
“Why such a thought did you nurse?” acknowledge.”
Ya Hayy!
Ya Qawiyy!
O Most high!
O our heart’s sigh!

Striking Stones of Spirit to emit Every ignorant hypocrite has days of faith
Didn’t these lines fall in Jaihoon’s fate?
His Fire
Therefore,
“Life means a passionate burning, an urge to make, Keep to your self the stones of spirit
To cast in the dead clay the seed of heart.” For, they shall one day Sinai-like fire emit
O friends who carry the stones And if you strike them like al Musthafa-
Striking each other to create sparks That Sweet Beloved of Lord-
(sallallahu alaihi wa sallam)
Would you throw them to the mire
If after a try or two they make no fire? Greater will be the fire from Mount of Nur
Would you not hit them again and again For, old-fashioned is the talk of Mount of Tur
Until the moment you see the flame plain?
Notes
O friends who are in distraction lost
In your remembrance of Lord of Alast Life means a passionate... : A couplet by Allama Iqbal
Alast : Alastu rabbikum, the occasion referred to in Qur’an when Allah
O those who are in confusion embarrassed
asked the humanity “Am I not your Lord” and they all replied “Yes”.
When before Him your forehead is placed
Greater will be the fire: The coming of Holy Prophet invalidates the
O those who in forgetfulness ruined
earlier laws of other Prophets.
When His nearness have you gained
Mount of Nur: where the Holy Prophet was revealed the Holy Quran
O those who fall asleep
When to Him you want to leap
Mount of Tur : where Moses (as) conversed with the Lord.
Dishearten not!
Tighten the knot (of hope)!
Love is a sweet and selfless feeling The heart then thinks of none but its own,
Before the beloved, the heart is kneeling Not even the one to whom it has love shown.
Lives are given even before its request He is ready to die first,
Lovers may jump to fire if faced with test But not suffer in her separation first.
The mother and son starved most of the nights This worry
“Tonight we have nothing, so let’s remain His guests” To be rich in a hurry...
O Nizamudheen! Like you had I been How is it possible you would ever find Him?
A like of you is nowhere to be seen! Tell me one reason you have to call upon Him?
O Nizamudheen! I too am in His quest How can you buy light in the market of darkness?
His love keeps burning in my breast A rose is planted in the garden, not a land barren
Tell this hypocrite a comforting word Do you search for Abraham in the workshop of Azar?
For, I cannot ask this question aloud Are you looking for Moses in the palace of Pharaoh?
The creed and its symbols are hijacked The minutes you devote for so-called prayer,
Mercy and Love have they from it axed Does no good more than split of hair.
They bring kaafir-made bricks to adorn the Masjid Your ears are fondled by the musical melody,
And expel the Mulla to far off for uttering a bitter word And your heart surfs on the waves of fantasy.
The Alchemy of Affinity 44 The Alchemy of Affinity 45
You have no time for Him,
Not more than few minutes you give Him.
Distance in Love
For hours you sleep, The days of Sun and Mon pass by,
For days and nights you work, But the kite of your memories still flies high
For months you strive for paying bills,
For years you save penny until death, O coolness of my eyes!
But for just moments you turn towards Him. O the warmth of my heart!
You are ready to waste your life in traffic, Even as I hide my pain absorbed
But stingy when it comes to His worship. In the world of zeroes and ones
My heart aches all the more
You take a break for Him from your busy work To see your compassionate smile
All my life I forgot to even a minute Him overlook
The heart translates its pain into tears,
May God have mercy on you thirsty ones Why? So that I realize all the more its pain
May your sparks become mine-like flames.”
Wise ones say that distance in love is a fortune,
Notes (And that) love grows more and more in such state
workshop of Azar : The father of Abraham who made idols and sold O the sweet warrior who cut the pride of my intellect
them.
The sun of my victory shone as I lost to your love
O love-filled pearl.
Give this empty shell a melodious rhyme
That which he can sing until you shall one day come
The Alchemy of Affinity 46 The Alchemy of Affinity 47
The days of Sun and Mon pass by,
But the kite of your memories still flies high
Lost in Him
Notes One cold night after my prayer
I looked at the face my Tasbih dear
Days of Sun and Mon : Sundays and Mondays or the days of week.
I asked “In what thoughts are you lost?

A Noble Message for the Love-less Remember His favors in your talk
Think not that love cannot be taken back
Age
A mention of Him to your loved dear
My heart beats with a noble message And He shall make your name on heavens hear
Filled with love,
’Tis meant for this ‘love-less age’ O lovers!
These are not a roaming poet’s lines
I care not if lovers refuse my gift To tease you with the tale of cups and wines
Many a time did the world with me rift
All I want is to share a little virtue
I speak the truth open Let the same in your life ensue
That which in my heart does deepen
Notes
O lovers!
These are not a roaming poet’s lines roaming poet’s : The Holy Quran addresses the misguided poets as those
To tease you with the tale of cups and wines who roam in the valleys saying things which they do not practice
All I want is to share a little virtue cups and wines : Common symbols used in mystic poetry
Let the same in your life ensue
Rahm: Compassion. The Holy Quran states that compassion that exists
‘As you lie in the lap of the beloved between hearts is a work of God
As your speech flows word after word
And He shall make your...: Based on a Hadith of Prophet sallallahu
As you count the stars in the sky alaihi wa sallam
As you wave at the birds flying high

Cry of a Shameless Slave I have learnt only for favors to ask
I am used for Your Reply to reach
It is a commonly accepted fact, I am more confident of Your Prompt Answer
(That) there are limits for favors to ask
Than my own questions which in me trigger
Relations with others are bound
By manners when arises certain want Without feeling any shame have I asked
I wished for rain, but not ready to be soaked
One may request.
Then ask. And yet again,
And again. I dare to ask again.
For more gain-
But for every favor to you given Your Bountiful Rain!
Shall be given another in return…
I ask You,
O Listener of my woes! O my Generous Master!
A shameless slave I am
O Fulfiller of my wants! But not a deceitful sham!
O who raised my name!
Grant me the generous favor
To thank for all that You did deliver
O who spread my fame!
My beloved!
You need not believe my tale of woes, (for)
Love is a sickness that steals a lover’s senses
It cannot separate fact from the fantasy
’Tis the fault of love’s ecstasy

Not Anymore! A Believer lives like ship ‘on’ the
Everything in life has a limit
water
The climb has to stop at mount’s summit
May I relate a wonderful incident-
Tasbih! I have cried enough, There lived in a town a Him-fearing merchant
Now I deserve to laugh
A man came running to him from another town
Your love has so far made me mad And told,
Now return the senses which I before had “Your ship in waters has gone down”
Your separation won me everyone’s pity The merchant looked down for a while
Now sit beside to arouse their envy And then said with smile “Al hamdu lillah”!
I burnt like coal in the furnace of thought
After some time came to him another news
Now fondle my deeds in the garden of action
“The ship that sank was not yours”!
Beauty that runs in the streets
Like an untamed beast Again, he looked down for a while
Show me the same when His Fear And then said with smile “Al hamdu lillah”!
Binds it with strings modest
The people around were struck by surprise
Pour into my heart What was this secret, they could not appraise
The honey of Affinity
Not any more can I bear They wondered why his reply for both was same
My soul’s complaint of friend empty! For the first one, ‘Inna lillah’ why he didn’t exclaim?
As long as the ship is above the water, “O kindhearted rose! In cry is a joy
It will sail smoothly over the latter Which the selfish of today can never enjoy
But when water enters inside the ship You are so blessed to have a kind heart
A hue that is most lacking in life’s colorful art
It will be destroyed during its trip
Men and women are no longer compassionate
A believer lives in this world About their own wealth they are passionate
But not world inside his heart
Forget this world and its mean creatures
Be proud of your tears which sincerely flows
Notes
Take it from me, O sweet one
Inna lillah : To Allah do we belong. This is the words said when a Remember this when tears run-
believer comes across any unfavorable news
For every drop of tear shed-
Hamd: The praise of Allah HE will give you an ocean of roses-red.

Why Love me so much? No Perfection for Love but after
Thinking about her one day
death
Jaihoon in his dream did say-
Leila insists that he look at none besides her
“Ah! Why love me so much? Majnun complains ‘Why I see nothing besides her’?
Why with tears my absence you quench?
Love steals the color and scent of the world
If I fail to give you the same in return
I fear His Justice will bring the hell-burn Near ones have to scream for a word to be heard
O Tasbih! Pray to your Merciful Rabb Who said in love is much joy?
Like yours, may my heart always in love rub
The soul gets restless fighting this ploy
The defeat in hate is not hard to bear
But to lose in love is matter of fear” There is no perfection for it but after death
It is too great a flower to bloom on this earth
I swear to keep my eyes fixed on your sweet (eyes) It passed by a lover about to die
But would you nail His Love in my heart’s seat? As in his dear one’s lap did he lie
I have heard that in return will come His rahm Into the air I raised my hands in prayer
When a believer sends a greeting of sallim And begged Him for a similar desire.
Therefore, Notes
Let His blessings upon me begin to descend
That will suffice from Azraeel’s fear to defend Beloved named after ‘Praise’ : The literal meaning of Holy Prophet’s
sallallahu alaihi wa sallam blessed name is Praised One
I wish, o Lord, how sweet a wish-
As is water so dear to the little fish return will come His rahm : Allah blesses a person ten times when he
greets Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam once.
My soul parts in joy while greeting the Beloved
So that when I rise, to approach him have I an excuse Azraeel’ : the Angel of death
===
Why then are you sad,
O light of my soul?
If love be for His sake,
Even death is for it a test small.
O Allah! May I reveal a hidden truth Take it from me, O His Slaves
Make it not a cause for your wrath Take it from me, none like Him gives!
Had I known before for sure He is in love with those who beg
That you’d grant me such treasure He responds in ways they never think
I would’ve asked you for more
Like a beggar knocking at the door O reader. Remember my lines
When to Him raises your hands-
Ya Rabb! I asked too less,
You gave me too much There is fun in asking too
Thirst is as tasty as water too
There is fun in asking too
Thirst is as tasty as water too
Is my love for you the sole reason why Imagine a greeting reaching the Dome of Yathrib
Ah! Imagine angels rushing to us on our dream’s trip
Time is passing so slowly as moon in the sky?
sallallahu alaihi wa sallam
Should I think of you with a lovely-hate? Ah! Imagine blessings showered tenfold
So that your love may bloom not so late Ah! Imagine wonders in life begin to unfold!
Teach me the ABC of patience Imagine! Imagine the joy O dear and rare one
I have forgotten my own lessons Imagine as if on earth we have paradise won
Drop me a rope so that I may climb Imagine the wonders that Beloved’s love can bring
I am drowning in the well of your love Then why....this delay for the bell of Affinity to ring?
Where am I asking for the whole cup? This hypocrite is used to asking too many questions
At least a drop you give for my soul to sip Without any manners to silently wait, he hastens
sallallahu ala Muhammad sallallahu alaihi wa sallam My words would not come out aloud
I wept before Him as if never before I cried
Notes
O Tasbih! Why make me cry with your tale?
Our souls are with Him as we dream deep: According to Quran, God Why make my little face go in your love pale?
catches our souls as we go to sleep.
Why make me envy about your Him loving maqam
Dome of Yathrib: The Green Dome under which the Prophet sallallahu Why burn in me the flame of love with this kalaam?
alaihi wa sallam is buried.
Why spread the fire of your restless heart in me
Imagine angles rushing to us on our dream’s trip: The greetings recited I had just begun to learn the lessons of patience
upon the Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam are carried by angels and
presented to Holy Prophet sallallahu alaihi wa sallam. (Mishkat)
You have brought one excuse over the other
To make my heart in His Love go wither
O reader!
Love is the art of conquering life’s heights
Believe me, it fortifies the self as Devil fights
The Alchemy of Affinity 78 The Alchemy of Affinity 79
I stopped What does a dream cost you?
‘I stopped looking at you too much “Every night before sleep to Him I pray
For fear evil eye might fall on you’ Ah! With much hope my desire I say
I stopped thinking of you more often ‘If not in front of my thirsty eyes
For the fear of forgetting my own self At least in dream if my prince comes’

Bind us with Your Bond Leila’s cry from the desert of love
Ya Rabb! We are not yet fully sure “I used to be the queen among my peers
Have we thanked You in the right measure? My wisdom was a wonder even to my seers
Yet, we ask You for even more I put my heart and soul in my will
With much love, You we implore I renounced sleep to win without fail
Oh my sweet Rabb!
I am a wretched soul
O Allah! Leave me not alone
===
I feel blessed
Very, very blessed
===
Yes. Blessed are my eyes to have met them once
But my soul weeps parted I am from them since”
The Alchemy of Affinity 90 The Alchemy of Affinity 91
What is the remedy for this never-ending pain? Don’t leave me in the dark!
For how long shall I wait for Affinity’s train?
O dear flame. Don’t leave me in the dark
Bead by bead, O Rabb, since when I have been joining
For the devil’s forces upon me to stalk
But again and again why is my Tasbih still breaking?
I know you have a Him-fearing kind heart
You’ve been so generous to me since start
In your absence my wings become weak Imagine the pain and regret of a shallow well
Without His fearful tears dry is my cheek
When His rain comes plenty, but it can’t have all
Now when I silently raise my head to the sky
My heart is small, it cannot contain much
Even before speaking a word I begin to cry
When the cup is to its full, it outflows
He hears me weep
He sees my heart deep For many years I ran east and west in His search
Within days you taught me in my heart is His reach
He knows how much sincere hope I keep
And what my heart whispers while I sleep Then I called Him the creator of the earth and sky
‘O My Merciful Him who loves me’ is now my cry
O My Tabrez. O My Tasbih!
Why to be so rude, o slave of Al Wadood?
Tell me a little more about that Merciful Him Why leave me to suffer in the solitude?
My heart is not content listening to you in dream
O dear flame. Don’t leave me in the dark
If you have wounded me partly with His Love- For the devil’s forces upon me to stalk
Take the sword and complete the story.
I have nothing else in this world to look at
For, it pains more for a lover’s heart to bleed
Our Ummah has become a stock to mock at
Give me not a book, but teach me how to read
O dear flame. Don’t leave me in the dark It cannot know the friend from the foe
For the devil’s forces upon me to stalk And talk matters big to make a show
Leave me not alone in solitude to perish I do not wish to put anyone in blame
Do everything else, but not like this punish What do I have for any difference to claim
The Alchemy of Affinity 94 The Alchemy of Affinity 95
In such a state, why me you desert
Alone in His Way, how shall I exert?
No Shame, Him you blame!
You showed me a world beyond books The other day my treasured friend I eagerly approached
His fear issued from your humble looks To relate news which my ears had just then fetched
In His way how shall I exert: The literal meaning of jihad is to ‘exert’. “How Merciful is my Him
Who is so patient with our zulm
I would have loved you most I would have loved you most
If you could stop me die If I could write a word
And hold me to cheeks nigh To ignore him could I afford
