EVEN IF YOU NEVER READ INSTRUCTIONS, YOU SHOULD

READ THIS!

MacGAMUT is so easy to use that, in all honesty, you could probably just save this
for quick reference in case you ever run into something in MacGAMUT that you
can’t quite figure out how to do. BUT, if you watch a couple of videos and do a little
reading now, you may be surprised to find that MacGAMUT is even easier to use
than you think it is. If you’re too eager to jump right into MacGAMUT and don’t
want to take the time right now to watch any videos or do any reading, we
understand. Just keep in mind that if you ever wonder if there’s an easier or faster
way to do something in MacGAMUT, the answer is probably yes, and the info about
how to do that is almost certainly in the Help (MGHelp on Macintosh) menu. And
you’ll find even more explanation in the videos and the User Guide 6.

www.macgamut.com: Whenever revisions to your MacGAMUT 6 software are

H

available, they will be posted on the MacGAMUT website, and you can download
and install these updates FREE through the Installers link. We strongly
recommend that you check for updates every month or so to be sure you are using
the latest version. All purchasers of MacGAMUT 6 are also entitled to a
FREE UPGRADE to the next new release of MacGAMUT, which will be available
U U

for download from the website whenever it becomes available. You'll also find a lot
of useful information on the website’s MacGAMUT Tech Support and MacGAMUT
FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) pages.

User Guide: The User Guide 6 (in the Text Files folder inside the MacGAMUT
Work Folder installed in your computer's Documents folder) is a handy reference
for everything about MacGAMUT. It’s full of useful info on a wide variety of topics,
including everything from how to install the software to details about how
MIDI/Virtual Keyboard entry works and how exercises are graded. It’s organized
with lots of bookmarks and other links, so you can easily find the info you’re looking
for.

First, install MacGAMUT 6: The installation procedure will install the MacGAMUT
6 program and the original Rhythmic Dictation, Melodic Dictation, and Harmonic
Dictation libraries. You may install the software, using the Web Installers, on as
many computers as you like (and on both the Windows and Macintosh platforms)
without violating copyright.

To Install MacGAMUT 6:

• Windows installation: After downloading the installer from the Installers

page at www.macgamut.com to a Windows computer, click Run on the
Download complete dialog, or start by double-clicking the .exe file you have
downloaded. Once the file has been unzipped, the installer will start
automatically.
• Macintosh installation: After downloading the installer from the Installers
page at www.macgamut.com to a Macintosh computer, just follow the on-
screen instructions to complete the installation. If the installer does not start
automatically, double-click the MacGAMUT Installer to start it up.
Then you need a startMG6.mgs file: Before you can use MacGAMUT 6, you
must have your own personal startMG6.mgs file, which gives you access to the
software on both Windows and Macintosh, and also records your statistics
automatically as you work. You must locate this file every time you use
MacGAMUT 6. If you don't have this vital file yet, see Step 2: Getting Your
StartMG6 File in the User Guide 6. For more detailed info about how to
download and save your startMG6.mgs file, go to www.macgamut.com, click on
MacGAMUT 6 on the left side of the home page, then click on Getting Started
with MacGAMUT.

Managing your StartMG6 File: This video tutorial (available as a download from
www.macgamut.com–click on MacGAMUT 6 on the left side of the page, then
click on Extras) is a step-by-step guide to everything you need to know about
keeping track of your all-important startMG6.mgs file.

Check with your instructor: If you are using MacGAMUT as a course

requirement, your instructor may want to change the Original Presets Rev
included in your startMG6.mgs file in order to customize the software for your
course. Similarly, if your instructor has prepared custom libraries of Rhythmic
Dictation, Melodic Dictation, and/or Harmonic Dictation exercises, you may need
to install those as well. You will want to check with your instructor to find out if you
should install new custom presets in your startMG6.mgs file or if you should be
using custom libraries before you spend a lot of time working on MacGAMUT.

Using MacGAMUT: The Exploring the Melodic Dictation Window video

(available as a download from www.macgamut.com–click on MacGAMUT 6 on the
left side of the page, then click on Extras) is an illustrated introduction to using
MacGAMUT. This video illustrates many of the techniques and shortcuts you will use
to enter your responses to MacGAMUT’s various drill components, including how to
enter notation using Keyboard Shortcuts that can save you a lot of time. For a
complete description of everything having to do with using MacGAMUT, please refer
to the User Guide 6.

Learn Fundamentals: If you need an introduction to only Intervals and Scales

(or maybe a refresher course in these basics), you can download Music Theory
Basics. The “pages” of this reference are complete with music notation, sound,
and hundreds of links from page to page to allow you to explore freely.
If you need a far more comprehensive introduction to music theory, you will
want to have a look at MFun: Music Fundamentals, an interactive eText that
offers you a thorough grounding in the basics of music. The first half presents
the "nuts and bolts" of pitch, keyboard, notation, rhythm and meter, major and
minor scales and keys, then puts it all into context with a chapter devoted to
melody. The second half adds the harmonic underpinnings, covering intervals,
triads, and seventh chords, concluding with an introduction to part-writing.
Computer-scored drills and quizzes at frequent intervals ensure that you
understand each concept as it is presented before moving on.
