Benefits of Internet to College Students

Internet, or the Net, is defined as a computer system, which allow a million of

(personal) computers around the world to connect in order to receive and share

information (Longman dictionary, 2010). There are various areas which have been

remarkably affected by this great invention. One of these fields is business, which

internet directly has influence on. Lucas (2014) stated that the net of computers

contribute to the development of communication among people in offices around the

world. In addition to commerce, education system in nations is the second one which

is considerably affected by the Net. In the work of Lambert (2016), the author shows

that there are universities and institutes in the world have offered a wide range of

online programs and more and more students are using this service to study higher.

The impact of internet seems to be important to developing world. These

countries have noticeably developed since the expansion of the Net. It is obvious that

the sector which has demonstrated the influence of global net is people whom are in

education, especially college students, whose study have enhanced with the

development of internet service. In the paper, I will discuss the benefits of internet to

college students, in terms of education, entertainment, and communication.

Firstly, it is apparent that internet brings various benefits to college students’

education. There are many research which focus on the relationship between internet

and education. Lai (2006) said that “inspired by the rapid development of technology

from the 1980s, computer has now become an influential component of second

language learning pedagogy.” Richard and Haya (2009) stated the Net is considered as

one of the crucial tools in order to make available learning resources for students to

exchange information. According to Fry (2001), learning through technical platform

utilize the internet and other technologies to provide various materials for learning, and

regulate courses in any organizations in general. In some colleges in Vietnam, there

are applications of internet for improving students’ learning performance. At HUFLIT,

a private college in the south, the school has implemented e-learning system such as

Education Discovery Online for third-year students. In reality, this cyber learning

system, to some extent, helps students improve their motivation as well as attitude

towards language learning.

In summary, based on the above analysis, I have discussed the benefits of

internet to college students, in terms of education, entertainment, and communication.

The influence of worldwide network appears to be imperative to developing countries.

These states have prominently evolved thanks to the expansion of internet. It is

undeniable that there are various sectors saw the impact of global net on people in

education industry, especially tertiary students, whose academic activities have been

boosted by the evaluation of internet service in general. However, over-use of internet

will certainly cause several drawbacks negative impacts to users, especially young

adults, who could not protect themselves from potentially harmful resources from free

internet services. In order to resolve this problem, parents and administrators should

implement some solutions or techniques which could reduce the unexpected

consequences from the computer network.
