Preliminary laboratory mix-design tests shall be done before the concrete is used,
following the approved relevant mix-deign procedure to determine what composition it
should have in order to ensure that, with the intended materials and the intended
consistency, it can be reliably placed and worked under the conditions of the site in
question and that it will attain the requisite strength properties without any deviation.
This test procedures shall find and establish strength versus water/cement ratio
relationship depending upon the size and grading curves of the aggregates intended to
adopt as well as on the ambient temperature and humidity.

Preliminary laboratory tests shall be repeated if there has been a significant change
either in the materials from which the concrete is made or in the site conditions on
which the concrete is made or in the site conditions on which the preliminary tests were
initially based.

For each mix prepared for the purpose of preliminary testing and for each intended age
at testing at least nine specimens shall be tested. This also may require the repetition of
test with other few cubes for confirmation of strength class found from the mix-design.
The number of cubes and repetition of different mix-design procedures and methods
depends on the direction and satisfaction of the consultants at the contractor's own
cost.

It is expected that concreting on the work will be cold (5 0c) or in very hot weather (300c),
the contractor shall also determine the workability, the stiffening, and the hardening of
the concrete under such temperature conditions. This shall also apply to the selection of
the aggregates and their mix proportions for the said strength class. In preliminary tests,
the desired characteristic value of the compressive strength of nine cubes of the
concrete mix to be adopted for the actual work shall exceed the value as shown.

2.26.2 Concrete of Grade A:

Strength class of M15 shall have the specified characteristic compressive strength of

Volume: 2 Technical Specification for Construction of Compound wall at Lamabagar, Dolakha

The samples of concrete for equality control test shall be for each test of the
consistency and for the water/cement ratio covers strength and be taken at random
from a different batch and at approximately equal intervals throughout the entire period
of concreting time. Additional test specimens may be required from fresh concrete for
various purposes such as to determine the strength of concrete at 7 days, 28 days or
for time of striping the form work, or to determine the duration of curing or to check the
testing error.
If special properties have to be verified, the scope of the tests to be performed shall be
as directed for the individual case concerned. But this also shall be at the contractor's
own cost and risk. In all cases and especially in doubtful cases, the contractor shall,
irrespective of the scope of testing laid down in this standard, satisfy himself and the
Engineer of the adequate of quality of the fresh or the hardened concrete by testing the
composition of the concrete (cement content and if necessary, water-cement ratio) or
the relevant properties thereof.

2.28 Strength:

The strength requirements are to be regarded as fulfilled if the compressive strength of

each series, comprising nine consecutive 15cm cubes attains at least the values stated
above in the concrete strength with the cement contents as mentioned above.

However, for concrete of the composition and made the same way, no more than one
out of every six consecutive cubes tested for 28 days may fall below the required
strength by 2 of the specified characteristic compressive strength.

Other ratios may be adopted of they have been determined in the preliminary tests and
adoption of this or any ratio for extrapolation is solely on the basis of approval of the
Engineer. The 28 days water curing crushing strength will be the final results.

The concrete shall be deemed not be comply with the strength requirement if the
strength of an one of the 28 days samples is less than 8 times the characteristic
strength class intended.

2.29 Hardening Test:

Hardening test shall be used to give an indication of the strength of concrete in the
structure at a particular point of time and this also give guidance as to the form work
stripping time.

2.30 Verification of Concrete Strength in the Structures:

In special case e.g.; if the compressive strength or if there is some other reason for
seriously doubting the strength of the concrete in the concrete in the structure, it may be
necessary to determine the compressive strength of the concrete by taking specimens
from the structure, or by non-destructive testing performed on the finished component
or by both methods. In connection with such tests the age and the condition of
hardening (i.e. temperature, humidity) of the concrete in the structure shall be taken into
account. In any case of doubt regarding the grade of concrete used, either due to poor
workmanship or based on results of cube strength tests of concrete on the basis of core
Page 26
Volume: 2 Technical Specification for Construction of Compound wall at Lamabagar, Dolakha

test and or load test may be carried out by the contractor to make the Engineer satisfied
with the plastic & hardened concrete at the contractor's own cost and risk for all
consequential damages too.

2.30.1 Core test:

If directed by the Engineer to perform core test to prove the quality of concreting for
their satisfaction, the Contractor shall perform core test on his own cost. Cores shall be
prepares & tested as described in IS 516-1959 as soon as possible after expiry of 28
days of concreting.

In case the core test results do not agree to be at least 85 percent of cube strength of
the specified and recommended concrete class of concrete specified for the
corresponding age and condition, the structure shall be deemed to be unacceptable and
removed on the Contractor's own cost.

2.30.2 Load tests on Part of Structures:

Load test if directed by the Engineer should be carried out by the Contractor as soon as
possible after expiry of 28 days from the time of placing concrete.

The structure should be subjected to a load equal to full dead load of the structure plus
1.25 times the imposed load for a period of 24 hours and then the imposed load shall be
removed.

If within 24 hours of removal of the imposed load, the structures does not recover at
least 75 percent of the deflection under superimposed load the structure shall be
deemed to be unacceptable.

If in any case the tests of compressive strength on the specimen from working concrete
of the aforesaid tests, non-destructive tests fail to meet the required minimum
compressive strength specified in the strength class the concrete structure shall be
demolished, dismantled and replaced by the contractor without the payment what so
ever incurred in its concreting the work and its dismantling procedures. But the removal
or demolish or dismantling procedure shall not affect other structure & its strength
prepared from separate concrete and its class.
Any control by the Engineer/Engineer's representatives shall not relieve the contractor
of his responsibility for the accuracy of structures, dimensions or parts of them with
regard to their positions or dimensions or strengths.

2.31 Concrete Structure:

The concrete work shall be done in foundation footing, raft slab reinforced column, tie
