Our Vision for the Future

A Greener Industrial District

Over 200 trees planted so far!

Greening the DTLA Industrial District through community-based projects while

engaging underserved members of the community via education and outreach.
Program:
Tree
Planting
 In partnership with KYCC
Environmental Services,
IDG actively plants trees
throughout the Industrial
District with funding from
a variety of sources. We
currently have over 200
trees planted and under
our care. Our larger
projects include at least
one community tree
planting a year to
promote urban greening.

Program: Tree
Maintenance
 Dedicated maintenance is
especially important for the
survivability of young trees in
our area.
 All new trees that IDG plants
get placed on our watering
schedule and are mulched and
re-staked as needed.
 In the pursuit of sustainable
water sources, IDG uses
recycled water from The Spirit
Guild, a local craft distillery,
for our tree maintenance runs.

7
Program: Street
Tree Team
 IDG promotes the benefits of
urban greening through our
volunteer Street Tree Team.
 A Supervisor conducts monthly
Tree Walks to educate
community members about the
benefits of trees and note any
problems they might see.
 This program specifically exists
to include the Skid Row
community (both homeless and
housed). Gift cards are given
out as a “Thank You” to our
volunteers.
Technology
IDG uses Plan-It GEO tree-plotting software to manage our nascent urban
forest. We’re now able to plot trees remotely or in the field with all data
stored in the cloud. Also we can now efficiently and systematically map
and track the status of our trees for monthly maintenance runs.

The CalEnviroScreen 3.0 Map
 Created by the California
EPA, this map shows the
cumulative impact of
environmental pollution
and social deprivation on
communities.
 The DTLA Industrial
District suffers from some
of the highest pollution
levels in the State (as
shown in red).

The Urban Greening Rationale
 Numerous studies demonstrate that well-developed urban
canopies promote healthy communities as well as economic
vitality.
 Trees protect from harmful UV rays, reduce heat island effect,
clean the air and water, and beautify communities.
 The Industrial District is almost barren of canopy and places in
the top decile of disadvantaged communities and environmental
burdens in California.

About Us
Industrial District Green was founded in late 2012 by Katherine McNenny, Hal
McMath, and Gabrielle Newmark to pursue local greening projects. They all saw
the desperate need for greenery in the area. In 2013, IDG was accepted into the
Community Partners Fiscal Sponsorship program.
Through her work in the fashion industry, Katherine became acquainted with
the DTLA Industrial District. Katherine’s local greening activities include 2
community tree-plantings and 3 “guerilla” gardens in Skid Row. Before co-
founding IDG, she “adopted” another 26 distressed trees along S. Alameda St.
She currently serves as Director of Education & Outreach.
Hal is a former money management professional who supported Katherine’s
early security, sanitation, and greening efforts in Skid Row. Hal became
Executive Director after IDG joined the Fiscal Sponsorship program of
Community Partners. He handles Finance & Operations.
Gabrielle is a licensed landscape architect with 20 years’ experience designing
and implementing greening projects throughout Los Angeles. Locally, she
secured the funding for and oversaw the planting of 36 trees in the Arts District.
She currently serves as Program Director.
