1. Define Scientist

A scientist is someone who systematically gathers and uses research and evidence, making
a hypothesis and testing it, to gain and share understanding and knowledge.

A scientist can be further defined by: how they go about this, for instance by use of statistics
(Statisticians) or data (Data scientists); what they’re seeking understanding of, for instance
the elements in the universe (Chemists, Geologists etc) or the stars in the sky
(Astronomers); and where they apply their science, for instance in the food industry (Food
Scientist). However, all scientists are united by their relentless curiosity and systematic
approach to assuaging it.

2. Name some scientist related to your field which has a major contribution on science
and technology.

 Mario Antonio Jiz II

Senior science research specialist, Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM)

Jiz significantly contributed to the study of schistosomiasis and the development of a

vaccine against this disease. Schistosomiasis is a chronic disease caused by parasitic
worms.

 Candido Africa, Eusebio Y. Garcia and Walfrido de Leon

Described the discovery and relationship to heart disease of an obscure fluke, the
heterophyds. Africa made also many valuable contributions on the life cyle of the ascaris
and the epidemiology of schistomiasis japonica.

 Arturo Garcia, Juan C. Nanagas, Fidel Cuajunco and Marciano Limson

Research investigations in anatomy have included studies on physical anthropology,
experimental hydrocephalus in cats, developmental abnormalities, neuromuscular endings,
and effects on growth of the albino rat subjected to low-protein diet.
3. Status of Bt Talong in the Philippines.

Bt talong, an eggplant that is spliced with “Bacillus thuringiensis” (Bt). A common soil
bacterium, Bt produces a protein that paralyzes the larvae of some harmful insects.

1901 - Bt was discovered to have an insecticidal property.

1950 - it became a well-known biological insecticide.
2003 - Research on Bt talong commenced in the UPLB laboratory.
December 13, 2010 - Mayor Sara Z. Duterte-Carpio ordered the uprooting of around 1,800
hills of Bt talong in an experimental station inside UP Mindanao.
May 17, 2013- the Supreme Court (SC) decided to permanently halt the field testing of Bt
talong based on the petition filed by Greenpeace Philippines and Magsasaka at Siyentipiko
para sa Pag-unlad ng Agrikultura.
July 26, 2016 - the Supreme Court en banc unanimous reversed its previous ruling. The
SC decision further stated that since no commercial propagation of Bt talong took place
and research activities never went beyond the field trial phase, “any future threat to the
public to a healthful and balanced ecology is more imagined than real.”
