Critical Goals
• Advocacy of greater efficiency in energy
consumption to relieve pressure off the grid
• Significantly addressing critical artisanal skills
shortages to support Household Appliance Repair
and Maintenance(HARM) as a sustainable
solution to community needs
• Contributing to government’s stated goals of
ensuring economic beneficiation at the local
level

Skills to reduce energy consumption
Deploying the requisite qualified skills in
maintenance and repairs of faulty appliances
will result in appliances operating more
efficiently and reduce wasting electricity, e.g.
refrigerator with faulty thermostat, shortage of
refrigerant, or defective door gasket etc

Required recruits/artisanal trainees 1000 per province

Training days  18 months course work and practical

 6 months mentoring and incubation

 Each trainee will be trained in the theory and practice of Household Appliance Repair and
Maintenance as part of their training in order to obtain proficiency

Equipment Basic tool-kits and instrumentation will be needed for the students to complete the practical
training, and develop a Portfolio of Evidence (POE) for accreditation purposes

Accreditation NQF Level 4 Certificates will be issued after completion of practical component of the training
programme. All installations will be signed off by an accredited training provider and a
Certificate of Completion (COC) will be issued

Pre-requisites for training Can accommodate NQF level 2 qualifications, which will mean that training will be for installers
with a minimum of Grade 9 or 10qualifications. Previous experience not required and no gender
bias

unskilled labour market is much larger and can be used to get a foot in the
door. There are also vacancies in other roles in this sector:
•Logistics, Administration, IT, Management, Research & Development, Manufacturing, Consultancy,
H&S and compliance

At present the country is producing on average


13,000 qualified artisans per year which is less
than half of the 30,000 artisans that the
country should produce per year by 2030
Conclusion:
DHET-From Green Campus to efficient household

The Department of Higher Education and Training will be


supporting the initiative by reducing energy consumption at
colleges and universities through recycling, encouraging
students to use bicycles and buses, and conducting
consumption audits.;
