Release Enhancements with SAP NetWeaver 2004s

INTRODUCTION

SAP NetWeaver 2004s is the mySAP Business Suite edition of SAP NetWeaver 2004. It is a minor
release that delivers on specific needs of the mySAP and xApps solutions delivered by SAP in 2005
and 2006. The next major release of SAP NetWeaver is planned for 2007 to further deliver on SAP’s
Business Process Platform strategy.

With unrestricted shipment of SAP NetWeaver 2004s in 2006, this release became the default
shipment of SAP NetWeaver. Thus, new SAP NetWeaver projects should be commenced using this
latest release. However, customers running SAP NetWeaver 2004 should only upgrade to SAP
NetWeaver 2004s if they either need it due to application needs, e.g. if they install mySAP ERP 2005,
or if they require the new functionality provided by SAP NetWeaver 2004s for example in the area of

• Business intelligence (enhanced query, analysis, and reporting; integrated business planning;
high performance analytics)
• Enterprise portal (federated portal network)
• Development (Web Dynpro for ABAP; Switch Framework supporting multiple industry
solutions)
• Mobile (enhanced administration capabilities to operate large mobile landscapes)

The purpose of this document is to provide an overview on the product enhancements delivered with
SAP NetWeaver 2004s. For more detailed information on a functional level we recommend looking at
the release notes for SAP NetWeaver 2004s, too. The release notes are available on the SAP Help
Portal at http://help.sap.com/nw2004s/ > English > SAP NetWeaver Library > What’s New in SAP
NetWeaver 2004s – Release Notes.

NEW VIEW ON SAP NETWEAVER

IT practices and IT scenarios provide a new view of SAP NetWeaver. As this concept itself is new,
and applies fully with the release of SAP NetWeaver 2004s, this document is structured accordingly,
and contains a brief description of all IT practices and scenarios introduced with this new view, even
though in some cases no new or enhanced functionality is delivered with this release.
For more general information on SAP NetWeaver, see the Solution in Detail of SAP NetWeaver at
http://www.sap.com/platform/netweaver/brochures/index.epx. You will find the latest version of this
document together with further material about IT practices and IT scenarios in general and more
details on SAP NetWeaver 2004s on SAP Service Marketplace http://service.sap.com/nw2004s and
on the SAP Developer Network (SDN) http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/developerareas/itpractices.

CONTACT YOUR SAP ACCOUNT MANAGER FOR MORE INFORMATION

This document is not a substitute for an ongoing dialogue with your SAP account manager, who has a
unique understanding of how to apply our platform strategy to your business. But it can complement
that dialogue by providing you with a solid background on SAP’s overall approach to SAP NetWeaver.

IT PRACTICES

SAP NetWeaver is an open technology platform. It offers a comprehensive set of technologies that
are natively integrated to support the critical capabilities that IT organizations need. SAP NetWeaver
provides immediate integration with all solutions on the SAP NetWeaver platform (SAP and partner
solutions). It is therefore the strategic platform of choice for custom-built and packaged applications
for companies that have both SAP and non-SAP IT architectures.
Organizations use the SAP NetWeaver platform to implement solutions to critical IT pain points in a
low-cost step-by-step approach without compromising their flexibility to deliver business process
requirements. The primary manifestation of this approach for customers is the ESA adoption program,
which provides all the information, services, tools and expertise that organizations need, in order to
craft their own IT practice roadmaps through SAP NetWeaver. Guided by key business objectives,
each customer adopts core functionality of SAP NetWeaver in incremental phases. Organizations can
implement IT practices projects in stages, addressing their immediate IT needs, and since the
platform's components are tightly integrated, within a sustainable cost structure. Through successful
execution of the adoption program customers will benefit from a pragmatic path towards the
enterprise service-oriented architecture (enterprise SOA) that will ultimately allow them to achieve
higher business flexibility.
For each of these practices, SAP NetWeaver delivers a variety of key IT scenarios, all of which are
straightforward to implement.

1. USER PRODUCTIVITY ENABLEMENT

Help users and groups improve their productivity through enhanced collaboration, optimized
knowledge management, and personalized access to critical applications and data.

1.1. Running an Enterprise Portal

You can give your users uniform, role-based, and secure access to any kind of application, service,

customers, partners, and suppliers – have a single, uniform point of access to the applications,
services, and information they need to perform for their daily work.

OTHER MAJOR CAPABILITIES

OS&DB Platforms for SAP NetWeaver 2004s

To respond to customer needs for TCO and the demand for new OS/DB platforms, SAP NetWeaver
2004s is available on some new OS/DB platforms: Windows, Linux, and Solaris on x86_64 or x64,
Oracle 10g, Max DB 7.6, and MS SQL Server 2005. In addition, some more usage types of SAP
NetWeaver 2004s are available on OS/DB platforms that have not been available before, such as
Enterprise Portal on IBM DB2 UDB for z/OS and iSeries.
On the other hand, SAP is striving to reduce the complexity of diversity of OS/DB platform
combinations. Therefore, IBM and SAP have both agreed to cease supporting Informix starting with
SAP NetWeaver 2004s. All SAP applications available before will still be supported on Informix as
long as the SAP application is in maintenance by SAP and the appropriate Informix release is
supported by IBM. The same applies to the operating systems HP TRU64 and Microsoft Windows
2000.
Wherever possible, all new OS/DB combinations follow SAP’s strategy for Unicode to make new
applications available on Unicode only. For example, non-Unicode applications for new OS/DB
combinations will not be available for Solaris on x64, but will still be available for Windows on x64 and
Linux on x86_64.This fits well with the strategy for replacing 32-bit applications with 64-bit
applications. The reason is that Unicode needs more resources and 64-bit addressing increases the
addressable space enormously.
Finally, z/OS as the application server for IBM DB2 UDB for z/OS is available for Central Services
only. This High Availability solution, comprising the enqueue and the message server is described in
more detail in SAP Note 67783.
For SAP NetWeaver 2004s OS/DB platforms planning and for released platform combinations, see
SAP Service Marketplace quick link /platforms or quickling /nw2004s

Browser Platforms for SAP NetWeaver 2004s

SAP's browser strategy is to meet customer requests for using alternative browsers to Microsoft
Internet Explorer. SAP NetWeaver 2004s supports Firefox 1.0 on Windows, Linux and
MacOS. Moreover, SAP will support any browser that is based on the same Mozilla rendering engine
as Firefox 1.0. The Mozilla version has to be at least 1.7.5. Customers should always use the highest
available patch. This support, however, is restricted to problems that are reproducible with Firefox 1.0,
based on the same Mozilla rendering engine. Problems that occur with other browsers and are not
reproducible with Firefox 1.0 cannot be fixed by SAP. Support for Netscape 6.x / 7.x can only be
provided in special cases. Firefox 1.5 is planned to be available with SAP NetWeaver 2004s SP
Stack 08.
For more details on plans for browser support, refer to SAP Service Marketplace quick link /platforms
or quick link /nw2004s.

Switch Framework
The Switch Framework makes it possible to maintain software from various industry solutions in one
SAP system landscape. All development packages are assigned to a switch. The switch setting
determines which packages (containing ABAP programs and dictionary elements) are active for a
given client. The switch setting must be activated at the beginning of the implementation phase for a
specific industry solution (such as IS OIL).
The Switch Framework offers high benefits since industry solutions become available at the same
time as the core functionality is delivered (compared to one release delay before). In addition,
functions can be shared between different industry solutions. Currently, only one industry solution can
be activated at a time in a customer installation.

27
Release Enhancements with SAP NetWeaver 2004s

Java Transaction Server

The Java Transaction server offers a highly robust environment to execute SAP transactions that
make use of Virtual Machine Container (VMC) technology. The VMC isolates concurrent users by
keeping the session context in shared memory. The session context is protected, meaning that only
one work process can access it at any point in time. If a transaction fails other sessions are not
affected. VMC technology is based on the traditional dispatcher and work process architecture of the
ABAP stack and allocates a pool of VM instances to requesting transactions. Internet Pricing
Configurator (IPC) uses VMC technology to avoid a separate server execution environment.

Flexible Password Policies

Passwords play a central role in authenticating users. With this type of authentication, users enter
their user name and password when logging on to a system, before they are allowed to access the
system's functionality. From SAP NetWeaver 2004s, there are enhanced, more flexible password
policies for ABAP systems that increase the security of your system landscape, making passwords
more difficult to crack. By default, new systems create two hash values for each password; one new
one, and one that is downwards compatible.

Authorization Concept for Remote Function Calls

The authorization concept for Remote Function Calls has been enhanced by the addition of a new
authorization object, S_RFC_ADM. This allows you to control access for system adminstrators to the
transaction SM59 for maintaining RFC destinations. This enables better segregation of duties
between administrators for different systems.

TREX Enhancements
On top of its proven capabilities in document search and classification (see chapter 2.2.) TREX
provides the new high performance analysis (HPA) engine. Its capabilities highly increase the speed
of business intelligence reports and enable fast search access to large volumes of table data even if
they are spread over a multitude of tables. SAP is thus combining long years of experience in
processing database information with the speed of state-of-the-art search technologies.
HPA stores Business Intelligence data as columns in the main memory for highly accelerated read
access. Support for adaptive computing architectures that spread data over multiple machines
enables the engine to handle multi-gigabyte data volumes while staying within the limits of installed
memory architectures. HPA models and algorithms are optimized and tailored precisely to SAP BI.
Nevertheless, the technology developments involved will also enable numerous improvements in
other areas, such as business object searches and functionality for new CRM releases.

Full-text Search for Business Objects

The SAP NetWeaver Search Engine Service (SES) for business objects is a simple generic interface
to enable indexing and searching of SAP’s business objects with TREX. Any business object can
implement the SES methods and is then subject to the SES features, including simple full text and
fuzzy search as well as advanced attribute search. The SES is part of the SAP NetWeaver
Application Server (AS) ABAP. In mySAP ERP 2005, a few dozen business object types come SES-
enabled out of the box.
Besides the general enablement of indexing and searching business objects, the SES contains an
administration user interface for the creation and monitoring of business object indexes, a default user
interface that is integrated into the F4 Help and full system documentation to facilitate the activation of
additional business objects through the SES.
