Release Enhancements with SAP NetWeaver 2004s
INTRODUCTION
SAP NetWeaver 2004s is the mySAP Business Suite edition of SAP NetWeaver 2004. It is a minor
release that delivers on specific needs of the mySAP and xApps solutions delivered by SAP in 2005
and 2006. The next major release of SAP NetWeaver is planned for 2007 to further deliver on SAP’s
Business Process Platform strategy.
With unrestricted shipment of SAP NetWeaver 2004s in 2006, this release became the default
shipment of SAP NetWeaver. Thus, new SAP NetWeaver projects should be commenced using this
latest release. However, customers running SAP NetWeaver 2004 should only upgrade to SAP
NetWeaver 2004s if they either need it due to application needs, e.g. if they install mySAP ERP 2005,
or if they require the new functionality provided by SAP NetWeaver 2004s for example in the area of
• Business intelligence (enhanced query, analysis, and reporting; integrated business planning;
high performance analytics)
• Enterprise portal (federated portal network)
• Development (Web Dynpro for ABAP; Switch Framework supporting multiple industry
solutions)
• Mobile (enhanced administration capabilities to operate large mobile landscapes)
The purpose of this document is to provide an overview on the product enhancements delivered with
SAP NetWeaver 2004s. For more detailed information on a functional level we recommend looking at
the release notes for SAP NetWeaver 2004s, too. The release notes are available on the SAP Help
Portal at http://help.sap.com/nw2004s/ > English > SAP NetWeaver Library > What’s New in SAP
NetWeaver 2004s – Release Notes.

Release Enhancements with SAP NetWeaver 2004s
IT PRACTICES
SAP NetWeaver is an open technology platform. It offers a comprehensive set of technologies that
are natively integrated to support the critical capabilities that IT organizations need. SAP NetWeaver
provides immediate integration with all solutions on the SAP NetWeaver platform (SAP and partner
solutions). It is therefore the strategic platform of choice for custom-built and packaged applications
for companies that have both SAP and non-SAP IT architectures.
Organizations use the SAP NetWeaver platform to implement solutions to critical IT pain points in a
low-cost step-by-step approach without compromising their flexibility to deliver business process
requirements. The primary manifestation of this approach for customers is the ESA adoption program,
which provides all the information, services, tools and expertise that organizations need, in order to
craft their own IT practice roadmaps through SAP NetWeaver. Guided by key business objectives,
each customer adopts core functionality of SAP NetWeaver in incremental phases. Organizations can
implement IT practices projects in stages, addressing their immediate IT needs, and since the
platform's components are tightly integrated, within a sustainable cost structure. Through successful
execution of the adoption program customers will benefit from a pragmatic path towards the
enterprise service-oriented architecture (enterprise SOA) that will ultimately allow them to achieve
higher business flexibility.
For each of these practices, SAP NetWeaver delivers a variety of key IT scenarios, all of which are
straightforward to implement.

Switch Framework
The Switch Framework makes it possible to maintain software from various industry solutions in one
SAP system landscape. All development packages are assigned to a switch. The switch setting
determines which packages (containing ABAP programs and dictionary elements) are active for a
given client. The switch setting must be activated at the beginning of the implementation phase for a
specific industry solution (such as IS OIL).
The Switch Framework offers high benefits since industry solutions become available at the same
time as the core functionality is delivered (compared to one release delay before). In addition,
functions can be shared between different industry solutions. Currently, only one industry solution can
be activated at a time in a customer installation.

TREX Enhancements
On top of its proven capabilities in document search and classification (see chapter 2.2.) TREX
provides the new high performance analysis (HPA) engine. Its capabilities highly increase the speed
of business intelligence reports and enable fast search access to large volumes of table data even if
they are spread over a multitude of tables. SAP is thus combining long years of experience in
processing database information with the speed of state-of-the-art search technologies.
HPA stores Business Intelligence data as columns in the main memory for highly accelerated read
access. Support for adaptive computing architectures that spread data over multiple machines
enables the engine to handle multi-gigabyte data volumes while staying within the limits of installed
memory architectures. HPA models and algorithms are optimized and tailored precisely to SAP BI.
Nevertheless, the technology developments involved will also enable numerous improvements in
other areas, such as business object searches and functionality for new CRM releases.
