Case Study

In this report, we are interested to determine the normal and frictional forces, also known
as kinetics of the rigid body. For the application, it is in a construction site, where a pipe is
equally suspended from the two tines of fork and the pipe is undergoing a swinging motion.
An example of the application is:

A forklift
And a simpler form of the application is:

There are many various unknowns can be calculated from aforementioned application.
However, we are going to focus on calculating work and energy in inertia system of the
given question.
For the calculation, there are several steps that is required to find the answer:

I. Calculate the moment of Inertia for thin circular pipe, I by using the formula:
𝐼𝐺 = 𝑚𝑟 2.
Moment of inertia is defined as a quantity expressing a body's tendency to resist
angular acceleration, which is the sum of the products of the mass of each particle in
the body with the square of its distance from the axis of rotation.

II. Find the kinetic energy, T by using the formula:

1
𝑇 = 𝑚𝑣 2
2

III. Calculate the final kinetic with reference to either the fixed-point O or the center of
mass G by using:

1 1
𝑇 = 2 𝑚𝑣 2 + 2 𝐼𝐺 𝜔2

Or use parallel-axis theorem if point O is considered to determine 𝐼𝑂 by using:

𝐼𝑂 = 𝐼𝐶 + 𝑚𝑑 2
Then,
1
𝑇= 𝐼 𝜔2
2 𝑂
IV. Calculate principle of work and energy for determine 𝟂, by using:
𝑇1 + ∑𝑈1−2 = 𝑇2

V. Resolve the equation to find the value of 𝟂

VI. Use the equation for Newton’s Second Law:
Σ𝐹 = Σ𝑚𝑎
to find the value of the normal and frictional forces acting on O
