QA – Trapezium

Trapezium
A quadrilateral whose only one pair of opposite sides are parallel to each other and
other two sides are not parallel.
Properties
1) Exactly one pair of sides are parallel
2) If the non-parallel sides are equal then the diagonals will also be equal to each other.
3) Diagonals intersect each other proportionally in the ratio of lengths of parallel sides.
Not necessarily True
1) Non parallel sides are not necessarily equal
Mensuration
1) Area of trapezium = x (sum of parallel sides x height) = x (AB + CD) X h

2) The line joining the mid-points of the oblique (non-parallel) sides is half the sum of
the parallel sides and is called the median i.e., Median = x sum of parallel sides = =
x (AB + DC) = EF)

3) By joining the mid-points of adjacent sides of a trapezium four similar triangles are
obtained.
4) If a trapezium is inscribed in a circle, then it is an isosceles trapezium with equal
oblique sides.
5) + = + + 2AB.CD
