WEATHER FORECAST FOR THE NEXT SEVEN-DAY PERIOD VALID 11TH TO 17TH
SEPTEMBER, 2018

Review of weather for the last seven-day Forecast for the next seven days (11th
period (3rd to 9thSeptember 2018): to 17th September 2018):
 Rainfall continued to be recorded over parts of the The forecast indicates that:

1. WEATHER REVIEW FOR THE LAST SEVEN DAYS (3RD TO 9TH SEPTEMBER, 2018)
1.1 Rainfall Review
Rainfall continued to be recorded over parts of the Lake Victoria Basin, Highlands West of the Rift
Valley, Central and South Rift Valley, the Coast and some parts of the Southeast Lowlands as depicted
in Figures 1 and 2.Comparing this review period (3rd to 9thSeptember, 2018) to the previous week
(27th August to 2nd September, 2018) it is noted that there was a general decrease in rainfall amounts
over several parts of the country although some stations at the Coast, Central Highlands and the
Southeast Lowlands recorded significant increases.

During the period under review, Busia Ministry of Water recorded the highest seven-day total rainfall
of 74.0mm. Other stations that recorded significant total rainfall amounts include Ngerenyi in Taita
Taveta County (39.2mm) and Eluuya Girls in Bungoma County (30.3mm).

Ngerenyi recorded the highest amount of rainfall within 24 hours i.e. 39.2mm on 5th September,2018.
Busia Ministry of Water, Bungoma Water Supply, Kakamega and Tuthu in Murang’a County recorded
heavy rainfall of between 20 and 50mm in 24 hours.

 
1.2 Temperature Review

Comparing this review period (3rd to 9th September, 2018) to the previous week (27th August to 2nd
September, 2018) it is noted that day-time (maximum) temperatures increased significantly
throughout the country. On the other hand, night-time (minimum) temperatures decreased over
much of the country although a few stations including Mombasa, Mtwapa and Wajir recorded
increases.

Mandera Meteorological Station recorded the highest daily maximum temperature of 38.2°C on 9th
September while Nyahururu Meteorological Station recorded the lowest daily minimum temperature
of 3.5oC on 7th September.The same stations recorded the highest seven-day average maximum
temperature of 35.6oC and the lowest seven-day average minimum temperature of 5.2°C respectively
(see Figure 3 below).

 
2. FORECAST FOR THE NEXT SEVEN DAYS FROM 11TH TO 17THSEPTEMBER 2018.

The forecast for the next seven-day period is as follows:

 Most parts of the country are expected to experience hot and dry conditions. The Central
Highlands (including Nairobi area) are likely to experience early morning cloudiness that will
give way to sunny intervals;
 A few areas within the Lake Victoria Basin, the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Central
and South Rift Valley and the Coast are likely to receive rainfall;
 Strong southerly to southeasterly winds of more than 25 knots are expected over the
northeastern and northwestern parts of the country.

DETAILED REGIONAL FORECAST FOR THE NEXT SEVEN DAYS 11TH TO 17THSEPTEMBER 2018.

The Lake Victoria Basin, Highlands West of the Rift Valley, Central and South Rift Valley (Counties of
Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, UasinGishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet,
Nandi, Laikipia, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma and Busia): are likely to
experience mainly sunny intervals in the mornings throughout the forecast period. Afternoon/night
showers and thunderstorms are expected over few places throughout the forecast period.

Northwestern (Counties of Turkana, West Pokot and Samburu): is likely to experience sunny intervals
during the day and partly cloudy skies during the night throughout the forecast period.

Central Highlands (including Nairobi area) (Counties of Nairobi, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Kirinyaga,
Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka): are likely to experience cool and cloudy early mornings
giving way to sunny intervals for the rest of the day.The nights are likely to be partly cloudy.

Northeastern (Counties of Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Isiolo): is likely to experience sunny
intervals during the day and partly cloudy skies during the night throughout the forecast period.

Southeastern Lowlands (Counties of Kajiado, Kitui, Makueni, Machakos and Taita Taveta): are likely
to experience sunny intervals during the day and partly cloudy skies during the night throughout the
forecast period.
 
The Coastal Strip (counties of Mombasa, Tana River, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale): is likely to experience
morning and early afternoon showers over few places on Thursday and Friday.The rest of the days are
likely to be sunny and the nights partly cloudy.

N.B: This forecast should be used in conjunction with the daily (24-hour) forecast issued by this
Department.
