DISCIPLINE
INTRODCTION
PHENOMENOLOGY is commonly understood in either of two ways: as a disciplinary
field in philosophy or as a movement in history of philosophy.
The discipline of phenomenology may be defined initially as the study of structures of
experience or consciousness, phenomenology is the study of ‘’phenomena’’
appearance of experiences or the way we experience things. Thus the meaning of
things in our experience phenomenology studies conscious experience as
experienced from the subjective or first person point of view this field of philosophy is
being distinguished from other main field of philosophy-epistemology (the study of
knowledge).
DISCIPLINE is mainly the practice of training that makes people more willing to obey
rules or a code of behaviour, even more able to control themselves using
punishment correct disobedience, it is an activity that provides mental or physical
training in a system of rules of conduct.
Discipline is a key component to effective classroom management.it refers to the
strategies a teacher uses to manage learners different behaviours and attitudes
during instructional time. The ability to control learners even in difficult situations is
important, maintaining classroom discipline, control of learners is the first task of
every teacher.

CRITICAL REFLECTION AND OWN OPINION

As a student teacher twice a year for 3 weeks we go for practical’s, we/ I found out
that discipline is a major issues in our schools, private, model C, public schools we
get learners with varying attitudes, children who are raised with different values, and
also from different backgrounds and communities. With our difficult reality that
parents are facing you find that the issue of discipline causes bullying on other
children, As this days both parents need to be at work and you find that daily
television and video games play a vital role to our children’s lives and future and this
has become their new role models to such an extent that they do not know the
difference between right and wrong anymore.
Some case in the class you find that they are children who are from abusive homes
and in the school they are no social workers/psychologist that can help those
learners that they end up having anger and to show that their disruptive behaviour
speaks for them, you also find that they are children who have not had breakfast in
the morning and the possibility of them having supper is not guaranteed those can’t
even control themselves they move up and about the classroom, they cannot
concentrate.
To support the above statement in my 1st year practicums which was in grade 3
which had a lot of learner’s who were repeating that grade and the teacher found it
hard to control their behaviour as they were 40 in the class, the was one boy who
was repeating that class and he is from a disruptive background, he lives with her
mother who is a drunkard and unemployed, he has a brother who is struggling to
read and write. Most of the time the learner come to school untidy and without eating
and the only meal he will get is lunch at the schools feeding scheme, now all those
contribute to his disruptive behaviour in and outside the classroom, he will do
anything to gain the teachers attention and disrupt the lesson. The learners mother
has been called to school but she doesn’t bother to come and hear why or explain
her child’s behaviour the schools code of conduct has not helped with the learner
which made the teacher take matters in her own hands by bringing that child a
lunchbox which he took home every day, and he also got one on one sessions
sometimes after school to help with reading and writing and that improved his
behaviour in class. That is why it is important for the teacher and the learner to build
a relationship.

PHILOSOPHICAL PERSPECTIVE AND EXPLANATION OF THE SITUATION

SOCIAL PHENOMENOLOGY
A teacher has to be a mother, father, role model, counsellor, social worker at one
time, the teacher fulfils a key role in dealing with learner misconduct in class and
school, with this as according to (Sun, 2015:98) the teachers themselves are to set
an example of how to live a disciplined life. (Wolhuter, van der Walt & Potgieter,
2013:54) the teacher needs to maintain a good relationship with the learners as it is
vital in promoting sound learner conduct. The teacher’s lesson planning has to be
done properly as the link between proper lesson preparation and sound learners
conduct is very clear, which means good preparation by the teacher is also
confirmed by a research of sun(2015:97) A good teacher in their particular subject
always influence the learners to behave in a good manner (Teh, 2015(b):51).
Lack of parental involvement and the believe that parents have that teachers have to
do everything even disciplining their own children which is not fair, as they fail to
acknowledge that their child has discipline it automatically leads to power struggle
within the classroom where the child refuses to be part of the team player and wants
to be isolated by their behaviour, understanding the unique backgrounds that our
children come from and different societies they belong with varying statues, and the
location of the school it is common to have discipline problems as they learn that
also from home for example a child who does not sit down and keep quiet when they
eat at home you cannot expect that child to behave different in front of others
because s/he is used to that behaviour, a child who have a parent that is concern
and is involve in their children’s school work, performance, checks their progress and
visits the school with that much intervention the learners behaves in a good manner
ANOTHER PHILOSOPHICAL PERSPECTIVE
EXISTENTIALISM
It is found in all cultures. The teacher in existentialist education is there to provide
pathways for learners to explore their own values, meanings and choices. In order
to do this learners need to be self-disciplined and guided, as children learn from
early ages, that is why discipline is a crucial issue in foundation phase. Learners
need to feel empowered and free, as a teacher it is my duty to maintain a learning
environment it doesn’t mean that learners to be entirely quiet when they are in class
it has to be a control environment (BEHAVIOUR,NOISE, MOVEMENT etc.) where
learners feel encouraged to express themselves through discussions, creative
projects, reading and even educational games. As in relating to existentialist
philosophy for children to be displayed they need to be free and allowed to express
themselves which a lot of teachers do not do, it is important to involve learners when
setting classroom rules so that the rules will be simple and easy to understood, it has
to be rules of that are age appropriate so that they will easily relate to them.in this
way the learners will be able to accept responsibility for their actions of inappropriate
behaviour as this has to be self-generated rather than generated from authority. For
every teacher the behaviour of our learners matters to our image as teachers that is
why we have to come with disciplinary methods that will accommodate all our unique
individual and make all the children in the class a family.instead of wanting children
to keep quiet the whole day it is better to have them engage in discussions and
interactions among themselves, having different activities in the class that will keep
them busy more especially when they are done with one particular subject and still
waiting on other students,it should be fun and educational as well for example
reading corner, play corner( they do puzzles),maths or language games, instead of
relying on our curriculum/ school system that is obviously failing us as it makes one
rule that has to accommodate all the different learners with different problems.
It is necessary for a teacher to provide an atmosphere whereby individuals develop a
healthy way as children learn better when the is no harsh discipline and fear from
failure. Self-evaluation is the beginning of learning, classrooms are expected to be a
free environment whereby teacher-learner relationship is an open healthy one to
make sure that children are to behave in the manner that yo do ,a role model teacher
will always influence her learners to behave in a positive manner. We live in a fast-
paced life that discipline is not like in the olden days, this days you have to be careful
how u even address this children with the rights that they have.
There are strategies that may use but every teacher may use their own knowledge
on how they can best implement them to their advantage
 PREVENTATIVE DISCIPLINE
Teachers with effective classroom management strategies establish
expectations, guidelines and rules for behaviour during the first few days, and
this explains the kind of behaviour is expected from the leaners e.g. we do
not laugh at other children, we share, we respect one another, we help each
other etc.

 SUPPORTIVE DISCIPLINE
It is the kind of discipline that is noticeable different from punishment as it
provides leaners with suggestions and options for correcting their behaviours
before a necessary consequence takes place e.g. for example, a leaner who
is busy talking/wondering about the class the teacher may instruct the leaner
to lower their voice/sit down or their play time will be reduced by 5 minutes to
make up for disruptive behaviour.
 CORRECTIVE DISCIPLINE
Learners who fail to redirect their behaviours after repeated attempts of
supportive discipline, the teacher may be forced to apply corrective discipline
which refers to a set of consequences following a minor offence done by the
learner, for example engaging in a verbal conversation with the learner to find
the problems s/he might have.

CONCLUSION

A teacher who uses consistent discipline strategies exhibits more effective

classroom management than an inconsistent teacher, though teachers develop their
own strategies of discipline for their own classroom, this strategies need to change
or renewed from time to time, to try something new and get learners challenged,
teachers need to put what they read and put it into practise and children are not
really hard to maintain they need your love, care, and motivation. A teacher who is
humble and have a happy open-relationship with her learners always have such
issues under control as when you put yourself in your children’s shoes and relate to
their everyday situation no doubt they will behave as you want them to, as discipline
works both ways for both the learners and the teacher and it is good to teach in a
well-disciplined classroom as it means that your lesson preparations will benefit all
the learners without unnecessary disruptions. And then positive results will arise
