Lammas Day falls on the 1st August and marks the beginning of harvest when thanks would be given
for the first corn to be cut. The first loaf made from the first corn would be allowed to go stale then was
crumbled into the corners of the barn. The name comes from the Anglo-Saxon for Loaf Mass.

On 8 August 1963, the Great Train Robbers found themselves richer, and the Royal Mail poorer by £2.6m.

The Glorious 12th is the beginning of the grouse hunting season in Britain.

St Bartholomew’s day is celebrated with a Bun Run, on the 24th August. Many children run around St
Bart’s Church, after which they are given a bun, and the parents are given a specially baked biscuit.

The World’s first international daily air service begins between London and Paris on 25 August 1919.

On the last Monday in August, the annual bog snorkelling championships are held in Waen Rhydd peat
bog, near Llanwrtyd Wells in mid Wales.

On 31 August 1900, Coca Cola was sold in Britain for the first time. Probably to help on Britain’s first long
distance bus service between London and Leeds, which began on 27 August 1900, with a journey time of
2 days.

August saw the birth of Alexander Fleming in 1881 and Enid Blyton in 1897. Sadly, August also saw the
death of Elvis Presley in 1977 and Princess Diana in 1997.

accommodation for elderly residents who no longer wish to live alone. Our four
homes, located in Tower Road offer companionship, independence, security and
privacy and remove the stress of maintaining and running your own property. The
inclusive charges are very modest.
Each of our houses has a resident Housekeeper and, in their absence a relief
Housekeeper, who provides two main meals daily, as well as coffee in the lounge
mid-morning. There is always someone on hand in an emergency, 24 hours a day.
We also offer respite stays - ideal for families
that are going on holiday but are worried how their loved ones will
cope on their own.
We are not a care home and anyone with low to medium dependency
from all sectors of the community is invited to apply.

Sing, sing, SING!
H
ave you ever had a deep urgent need
to sing your heart out? I have always
wanted to sing in a choir – I can sing
in the bath, I can sing in the front room into
a hairbrush, and I can sing extremely loudly
in the car (until the children start to weep) –
but I have always been terrified of singing in
public. It’s one of those horrible things – you
know you want to, but you just can’t! So, the
Noble Editor of this magazine and I decided
to try out ROCK CHOIR.
ROCK CHOIR is a national initiative that
brings together people who want to have
a big old singalong in most towns. Bromley
has a Rock Choir, so does Orpington. I
hear there may soon be one in West
Wickham! They meet once a week
– and have a concert at the end of
each term – and they’re a very friendly
bunch.
We went along, very nervously,
and paradoxically ended up in
the front row – what on earth did
we do that for? Was it because
we subconsciously wanted to be
ridiculed? OR was it my faint
worry that I wouldn’t be able
to read anything if I was further
back? Anyway – Jim, the Choirmaster
bounced in with his microphone and his
keyboard, and pretty soon we were warming
up like no tomorrow. I tried to make The
Ed pretend that he was an Alto, when he is
really a Bass, just so that I could cling to him
for support, but in the end, he had to go and
stand on the other side of the choir because
I was cutting off his blood supply!
I had this awful sick feeling that I was going
to open my mouth and frogs and snakes
were going to come out – like some twisted

horror nursery rhyme. I was worried that I
wouldn’t be in tune, or that I’d get it wrong
– or that, heaven FORBID, someone might
HEAR ME! I could feel my legs beginning to
tremble as I dared to join in, and the urge
to run was almost overpowering, like some
mad bronze age FIGHT OR FLIGHT moment
– and then suddenly, I could feel myself
smiling…. singing and smiling…. and
then jigging about a bit …. and
then clicking, and clapping, and
singing for all I was worth! “No
wind, no rain” I sang out, waving
my arms, dreaming of sequinned
dresses and beehives. By the
end of the two hours, I was full of
joy – and this is what singing DOES
for you! It energises you, it fills you
with joy and you forget all your horrible
deadlines and ironing piles!
Ok, don’t be sick now. I can see you
all shaking your heads – hmm this doesn’t
sound like School Run Mum, things do not
usually go this well! And you would be quite
right to say that. Which is why I will tell you
a secret. On my way home from work, I
bought myself a pair of Size 16 Rock Chick
knickers to wear under my linen trousers for
Dutch Courage! Half way through Ain’t No
Mountain High Enough, I spun round to clap
like some sort of frenzied Jackson brother,
and the elastic went! (Should have bought
the 18!) I can only imagine that the rest of
the ROCK CHOIR must remember me as the
poor girl who needs a hip replacement “ooh
she’s young for that isn’t she? Did you see
the way she walked?”
Tra la laaaaaaaaa! Term starts in September!

Cheap Easy Cheesy Potato Bake
• 2 Cloves of Garlic, Crushed or
chopped
• 1/2 a Red Onion (if you like onions
you can put a whole one in)
• 3-4 Reasonably Sized Potatoes
• 4 Pieces of Bacon, chopped
• 1/3 of a Tub of Soft Cheese
• 5 Average Sized Mushrooms
• Grated Cheese (have as much or
as little as you like)

Method
1. Preheat the oven to 200c/fan 180c, Chop the potatoes
into small squares and boil for about 10 mins. Drain
and then leave.
2. While the potatoes are boiling chop the bacon, onion,
mushrooms and Garlic. Start to fry the onions and
when they have gone a little soft add the rest.
3. Once everything is cooked in the frying pan, add the
soft cheese and stir until everything is coated. Pour
the mixture into the potatoes and stir so it covers
everything.
4. Pour into an oven proof dish and sprinkle some
paprika and a third of the cheese, then stir again. Once
everything is coated cover with foil and bake for 25
mins.
5. After the 25 mins remove the foil and put the rest of the
cheese on top of the bake and put back in the oven for
about 20 mins until the cheese has gone a nice golden
brown.
