Dear Jason,
I really need your help. I have a very serious problem. It’s my addiction. I have gambled
away most of my savings and now I am deep in debt – lots and lots of money. The loan sharks
are after me. They come to my house in the wee small hours. They even threaten to kill my wife
and two sons if I don’t pay up by a certain date.
This addiction started when I was just a child. I used to gamble with the village children.
It was mere fun with small bets. It really seemed harmless then. It carried on till my secondary
schooldays when I would play with my classmates after school. We would go to the open space
behind my school to while away our time gambling. I could not kick the habit even after I got
married.
As I was the sole breadwinner of the family, I used to go to the casino to try my luck.
There were times when I won big but at the end of the day, I would lose all my winnings. I
resorted to borrowing some money from loan sharks as I wanted to send my two boys to
college. The more I borrowed, the more I lost in gambling but I had never learned from my
mistake to turn over a new leaf. I borrowed more and more. My two boys were forced to drop
out of school. The elder boy is now working as a mechanic in a friend’s workshop while the
younger one is a technician in a shipping company.
My wife has never complained even though she knows of my nasty habit. She is a
woman of few words. She helps to supplement the family’s income by babysitting our
neighbour’s baby of late. The little she gets, she spends on food for the family.
I hope you can help me to tide over this round. I know that I am wrong. I need to settle
my debts, or my family will be in trouble. Please help.
Your friend,
Leong Huat
