1.0 Introduction

1.1 Objective

The objective of this proposal is to suggest new finding on alternative water resource
for plant watering in UTHM. The water that being used for plant watering in UTHM
currently is taken by directly from the treated water supply tank in UTHM. This current
procedure is highly maintained and consuming a high cost of money. A new alternative
water resource could reduce the cost and saves money. The new alternative water resource
should fulfill the requirement of the nutrient needed by the plant and should not harm the
plant.

1.2 Sample Location

The proposed location for the water sampling is the sediment pond at G3 in UTHM.
This pond is surrounded with class facilities such as Block G3 and FSKTM. All drainage at
the surrounding pond is connected to these facilities which make the Pond G3 as the
catchment area for the water. The coordinate of the pond in global positioning system is
1.859749, 103.086013.

1.3 Selected Parameter

From the Water Quality Index, there are several parameters that can be measured at the
laboratory. These parameters are divided into physical properties, chemical properties and
biological properties. For the physical properties there are total solid, turbidity, color, taste,
odor and temperature. Hence, for the chemical properties, the parameter that can be
calculated is dissolved oxygen (DO), chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biochemical
oxygen demand (BOD). Bacteriological parameters coliforms, fecal coliforms, specific
pathogens and viruses were under the biological properties.

In this sampling, the parameters that will be record are the pH, dissolve oxygen (DO),
biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), suspended solid
(TSS) and ammonia nitrogen (AN).

2.0 Methodology

2.1 Sampling Procedure (APHA 1060)

Before collecting samples, the sampling equipment and proper bottles need to be prepared
in good conditions. To take the sample at proposed location, the team need to ensure the pond
have enough water flow and the details of the environmental features such as weather, time
and date being recorded during the sampling.

1. Prepare gloves, PTFE bottle and masking tape.

2. Wear gloves and rinse the PTFE bottle with water three times from proposed lake
3. The operator needs to ensure their glove did not fully submersed when sampling
the water.
4. Fill 100 ml water in the PTFE bottle.
5. Put the masking tape on the bottle for labelling purpose.
6. Label the time, date, weather condition, and location of the water taken.
2.2 On Site Measurement

Some experiment must be done on the site to get immediate result on the
sediment at the pond. Furthermore, the tool or apparatus to conduct the on-site
experiment is portable and easy to conduct and does not need to bring the sample to the
lab. Field analysis is necessary for temperature, transparency and pH. Dissolved oxygen
may be determined in the field or the sample may be treated in the field and the
remainder of the analysis completed in a laboratory (APHA 5220). If samples are to be
chemically preserved before being transported to the laboratory, conductivity must be
measured before preservative chemicals are added.

2.3 Laboratory Procedure

2.3.1 Dissolved Oxygen (DO)

2.3.2 Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD)

2.3.3 Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD)

2.3.4 Suspended Solid (TSS)

2.3.5 Ammonia Nitrogen (AN)
