 Resources- an economic or productive factor required to accomplish


an activity, or as means to undertake an enterprise and achieved
desired outcome
 Three most basic resources are land, labor and capital
 Other resource includes energy, information, expertise,
management, and time
 Resources has the following dimension:
- Great in volume… very many
- Inputs in economic activity/ to produce another product
- Raw materials, plentiful
- No value at source, but with value once there is intervention,
innovation, manipulation

Management as a process:
Koontz: Management is the art of getting things done through and
with people in formally organized groups

Components of Management:

1.) Organization- a group of two or more people or entities or


effort for the purpose of accomplishing a goal
2.) Processes/Systems and Procedures- in all business and
organizational activities is the act of getting people to
accomplish desired goals and objectives using available
resources efficiently and effectively
3.) Functions of Management- Planning, organizing, staffing,
leading or directing and controlling
HRM: defined as the implementation of the strategies, plans, programs
required to attract, motivate, develop, reward and retain the best people
to meet organizational goals and operational objectives
Edward L. Gubman observed in the Journal of Business Strategy “the basic
mission of human resources will always be to acquire, develop and retain
talent; align the workforce with the business/function of organization
and be an excellent contributor”
Purposes of HRM:
1.) To acquire the best person
2.) To maintain the best person
3.) To develop the best person for the best output
Line function means: direct control and supervisory power over the people
under him
Staff function means: are function s in light of the organizational
objectives, needs and resources

Tasks- coordinated and aggregated series of work elements used to


produce an output
Position- consists of the responsibilities & duties performed by an
individual, employees
Job- group of positions that are similar in their duties
i.e- computer programmer, compensation specialist

The Organization as an Open System


- An open system transforms resource inputs from the environment
into product outputs
