Cigarettes, Smoker, and Smoking

A. Smoking is indeed a serious social problem in our country. The government keeps
reminding that smoking is dangerous, not only for smokers themselves, but also for other
people in the surroundings (passive smokers). But the warnings do not seem to get any
response.

B. A cigarette is like toxin hypermarket. You can find many kinds of toxin in it: acetone,
carbon monoxide, tar, arsenic, ammonia, hydrogen cyanide, and toluene. The tar itself
contains more than 43 substances that can cause cancer. Scientist says that when we are
smoking, we put more than 4.000 kinds of toxic materials in to our body.

C. Smoking is a bad habit that is very hard to break. Smokers are everywhere. Many people
smoke just to socialize, but many other are too addicted to quit.

D. Another myth about smoking is that it cannot only make them awake but also raise their
inspiration. This contrary to the findings of a research in California which show that
smoker’s ability to think is lower than of non-smokers.

E. However, many smokers believed that a cigarette with low tar is less dangerous. And so
is a filtered cigarette. But the problem is one cigarette is never enough for addicted
smokers.

Commercial on TV

You may have asked yourself why are the same commercial used over and over again,
perhaps four or five times in one evening and for as long as half a year? According to an article
in TV magazine, there are three reasons for repeating the same commercial so often.

The first reason is simply a matter of economics. The production of even a 30-seconds
commercial may cost as much as $ 50,000. Obviously it would be far too expensive for a
company to produce a new ad everyday, or even every week.

The second reason is to make sure that as many people as possible will see it. This is what
advertising researchers call “market saturation”. The more often a commercial is shown, the
more people will have a chance too see it at least once. People who watch television less often
are confine their viewing to a few favorite programs, may see the ad only once or twice.

The third reason for repeating commercials so often is the belief that repetition help to
imprint the message on the mind. Some feel that repetition-to the point of irritation-is good. The
irritation itself is supposed to make people remember the product. Other argued that repetition to
the point of irritation can annoy television viewers so that will purposely avoid the product.
While this point may be debated, there seems to be no question that a moderate amount of
repetition makes the ad memorable, and certainty more persuasive than a single presentation.

Why are television commercials used over and over again? Their repetition is economical, it
ensures that as many people as possible will se them, and makes them more memorable and
persuasive.
