Grade 4 Weekly Overview

Our Week in a Nutshell…

Dear Parents/Guardians,

It has been a whirlwind of a final full school week here in Grade 4. Students
wrapped up contents, started some reflections and did end of year assessments
throughout the week. They had a great time of courageous sharing and
reflective thinking while at Secondary campus today.

Since we are nearing the end of our academic year, we have assessed the
students in Math and writing. Those final assessments will be posted to each
student's portfolio and serve as a point of initial reference for their next
teachers.

The UoI summative assessments were superbly presented in varied ways. It is

hoped that the students will continue to act responsibly towards their planet.

Paperless reports will be out on Managebac on 28/6 onwards. This document

shares more details about your child's overall performance in Grade 4. If you
happen to require further clarification do not hesitate to get in touch via e-mail.

Both Grade 4 are planning to have a "healthy brunch" class party on the last day
of school. We hope you can assist us by reminding your child to take along a
healthy food or drink for sharing.

We thank ALL of you for your wonderful and continuous support.

Kind regards

Ms Nadine &Ms Fatema

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and You

Gurvinder Jaswant | Secondary Digital Design

A little over a fortnight ago, on May 25, 2018, a new set of rules called the General Data
Protection Regulation (GDPR) came into effect in the European Union. Remember a flurry
of emails asking you to confirm whether you still want to receive information from particular
websites? Or ones from companies notifying you that they have updated their privacy
policies? This was in response to the GDPR.

The GDPR is a set of rules that are designed to regulate how organizations handle
personal data. Although a European Union law, the GDPR affects organizations outside of
Europe that have dealings with European Union countries and residents.

All schools in Africa that are members of the the Association of International Schools in
Africa (AISA) received training on the basics of the GDPR. At DIA, we have two staff who
took part successfully in the training.

The GDPR is quite complex, and organizations and individuals may still not be completely
clear as to how to interpret and apply it. For example, the data protected in the GDPR is
specifically personal data. But what kind of data is considered personal data? According to
EUGDPR.org, an educational portal on GDPR, this would include a person’s name,
identification number, location data or online identifier, in other words, any data that can be
used to directly or indirectly identify a person. Based on that information, how would you
answer the following question in a quiz that appeared on the BBC website?

GDPR is designed to help people protect and control use of their “personal data”. But what
does that cover?

Your name, email address, date of birth and passport number - but nothing else
All the above plus your bank details, social network posts, medical information and
computer IP address - but nothing else
All the above and, under some circumstances, images of your face and information about
your relatives among other data
Anything and everything you might want to define as being personal to you

To see the correct answer, and explore interesting scenarios that could come up in the
GDPR, take this quiz and see how well you do. All the best!
