Fuel Cell Test Systems – GCU series Gas Control Units, ELB
series Electronic Load Banks
Our Gas Control Units (GCU) and Electronic Load Banks (ELB) can be used separately, or
together as a complete fuel cell test system. Make your choice between three fuel cell power
ranges; 1500W, 500W and 150W, and H2 ECOnomy’s test system will become an
indispensable part of your fuel cell laboratory.
¾ GCU gas control units are equipped with devices for measuring and controlling gas
flow rates, pressures and temperatures, as well as with humidifiers with ramped
heating temperature regulation and a bypass line, allowing operation with or without
humidification.
¾ The hydrogen channel can be set to be purged with specified intervals and duration, to
help avoid flooding of the tested fuel cell when necessary.
¾ GCU is operated and controlled manually, by a dial, knobs and handles on the front
panel. Once set, the system will maintain the gas temperature and humidity
automatically.
¾ The unit has self-diagnostic capabilities to automatically fix some of the possible
failures of its microprocessor program that may occur due to the proximity of powerful
external sources of electromagnetic impulses.
¾ PC interface with RS-232 protocol (through a COM port) to enable reading, displaying
and recording the test data on a personal computer using the National Instruments
LabVIEW™ based Automated User Monitoring Interface (AUMI) software.
¾ Designed to fully comply with safe operation requirements, protecting personnel from
electric shock, fire and explosion.
¾ All sensors in the GCU Gas Control Units are spark-protected to ensure the safe
operation with flammable gases.
¾ A special hydrogen safety sensor to detect the presence of as low as 0.5% of leaked
hydrogen in the unit, with light and sound alarm indication and automatic shutdown.
The Alarm indication is also duplicated in the AUMI software interface.
¾ In case of necessity, both channels can be connected to nitrogen or inert gas supply
source.

H2 ECOnomy’s electronic load banks allow testing fuel cells in three different load modes -
Constant Current, Constant Voltage and Constant Power.
PCI personal computer interface with RS-232 protocol (through a COM port) is provided to
enable full control of the load bank from a personal computer using the National Instrument’s
LabVIEW™ based Automated User Control Interface (AUCI) software, as well as to record
and digitally/graphically display the test data.
The PCI also adds the Scan and Duty Cycle testing modes to the unit's capabilities. The Scan
mode allows easy and automatic acquisition of data for polarization curves: the ELB applies
incrementally increasing current values to the tested power source up to a limit set by the user
over a specified period of time. In the Duty Cycle mode a specified load is turned on and off
with a specified duty cycle time and period, which is most useful when activating a fuel cell or
testing its durability.
- Designed to fully comply with safe operation requirements, protecting personnel from
electric shock, fire and explosion.
- Overheating protection embedded.
- Includes a fuse to protect from surges, spikes and the like in the grid.

H2 ECOnomy’s LFS-FC-D liquid fuel supply systems are intended for supplying methanol,
ethanol or other liquid fuels to fuel cells. LFS-FC-D is equipped with devices for measuring
and automatic control of liquid fuel pressure and temperature, manual control of flow rate, as
well as a system for cooling of the unused fuel with either subsequent return to the tank or
discharge to outside.

LightFC-XU™ is a small, 1 to 4-cell fuel cell designed specifically to demonstrate the potential of fuel
cells. It can be purchased in 0.6, 1.2, 1.8 and 2.4V models that deliver 1.3-8 watts of power, enough to
illuminate a small light bulb. LightFC-XU™ is an excellent starter kit for understanding the inner
workings of fuel cells.

EcoFC-XU™
EcoFC-XU™, available in 1 to 6-cell versions, generates 4.5 to 36 watts at 0.6 to 3.6 V. They are
designed for demonstration and study of fuel cell operation. Although the output voltage increments are
the same as LightFC-XU™, more power is available because the membrane electrode assembly in the
fuel cell has a larger active area. By comparison, this is more power than is normally drawn from a 9 V
battery. EcoFC-XU™ series are straightforward fuel cell stacks, powerful enough to operate small
electronic devices, inexpensive to own and convenient to experiment with.

H2 ECOnomy’s ProFC-XR™ series air-hydrogen PEM fuel cells provide maximum power of up to
160W, depending on the model. Designed for demonstration and study of fuel cell operation, these
PEM fuel cell stacks are offered in 1 to 10-cell models. They produce 15 to 160 watts of power at 0.6 to
6.0 VDC. This is more than enough power to keep your notebook computer running. ProFC-XR™
series provide a good model of the systems that are being used in various applications.
Attention: H2 ECOnomy’s ProFC-XU™ series have been replaced by ProFC-XR™. Thanks to the
improved design the new ProFC-XR™ have better performance and are more lightweight. With the
ProFC-XR™ fuel cell stacks you will have more power for the same number of cells and voltage.
