Replica is a copy of database which having the same replica ID which share during the replication process and new copy
is a simple copy of database which don't have any replica ID and further u cannot replicate from it's original database
10. How internal & external Mail routing work? Give with example
When user send a mail NRPC (Notes protocols) to deposit the message into the MAIL.BOX database on the user's
Domino mail server. The Router finds the message in MAIL.BOX and determines where to send the message for each
recipient. The Router checks its routing table to calculate the next "hop" for the message on the path to its recipients and
determines the appropriate protocol -- either SMTP or Notes routing -- to transfer the message.
Using SMTP routing, the Router connects to the destination server -- the recipient's mail server, a relay host, a smart
host, or one of the servers in the recipient's Internet domain -- and transfers the message.
Using Notes routing, the Router moves the message to the MAIL.BOX database on the server that is the next hop in the
path to the recipient's mail server. The Router on that server transfers the message to the next hop, until the message is
deposited in the MAIL.BOX database on the recipient's home server. The Router on the recipient's server finds the
message (in MAIL.BOX on a Domino server) and delivers it to the recipient's mail file
12 What is smart host? What is relay host? And difference between these two?
Smart host Is a third party server (may be UNIX) which lotus uses for receiving of incoming mails for local domain
recipient.
Relay Host Is also third party server which may be used in lotus for relaying mails to SMTP mail recipient
14. What will be do when replication stop between the two server?
Stop showing the effect, (i.e.) if you make any change in a server 1 it will not be reflected in server 2 and vice versa.
19. How will convert the entire mail file in to .ntf by command
You can convert entire mail file by ntf command the command which we use are as follows:
Load convert -c mail\ {Database name}.nsf {Name of that particular ntf}
Ex: If I convert the mail file then the command is
Load convert -c mail\ {user mail file}.nsf inotes6.ntf
26. If user saying that he is not receiving the mail from outside domain what u will do to troubleshoot the
problem?
I would first like to check the person document of the gateway incom’g mail ser.. If that’s fine..I will check the log file..
37 What is ECL and can we implement the ECL from server side.
Ans: An ECL is used to set up workstation data security. It lets you control which formulas and scripts created by
another user can run on your workstation. Yes workstation ECL is updated/Implement from Server Admin's ECL by
creating a Security policy document.
40 one group which is already exists, if we want to deploy the explicit policy on them what is the step.
Select group->select groups from Tool panes->click assign policy. (An Explicit policy always override the
Organizational policy...see by Policy synopsis)
60 What if a mail.box gets corrupted? How will u solve it without shutting down the domino server?
When a mail.box gets corrupted, usually we can stop the router and then work with fixup and compact commands, still if
the problem persists, we need to stop the server and take the backup of the mail.box and delete it from the original
destination and then start the server... as we start the server a new mail.box will be created...
63 You get a RXX error and the server shutdowns abruptly very often ...what would be de reason and how u
would solve it.
RRV error arises due to corruption in the names.nsf of the server... Then we need to delete and take the backup of the
existing names.nsf and copy the names.nsf from the different server of the same domino domain and paste it in the
server's data folder and start the server.
64 To shift lotus domino server to a different server. What all files/folders would u shift or copy to the other
server to start in minutes
To shift Domino Server from one server to another server, we need to copy names.nsf, server.id, notes.ini, and the whole
data directory if the domino server is the primary server...
73 Why this message comes in sending a mail “address not listed in domino directory.”?
"Address not listed in domino directory".. This error is raised if the recipient’s name is not found in the domino
directory..
76 What is encryption?
Encryption protects data from unauthorized access. Using Notes and Domino, you can encrypt:
Messages sent to other users: Then an unauthorized user cannot read the message while it is in transit. You can also
encrypt saved and incoming messages.
Network ports: Encrypting information sent between a Notes workstation and a Domino server, or between two Domino
servers, prevents unauthorized users from reading the data while it is in transit.
SSL transactions: You can use SSL to encrypt information sent between an Internet client, such as a Notes client, and an
Internet server, to prevent unauthorized users from reading the data while it is in transit.
Fields, documents, and databases: Application developers can encrypt fields within a document, an entire document, and
local databases. Then only the specified users can read the information.
80 What is NAT?
NAT is a method of translating an IP address between two address spaces: a public space and a
private space.
Public addresses are assigned to companies by the Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and
Numbers (ICANN) or leased from the company's ISP/NSP. Public addresses are accessible through
the Internet (routable) unless firewalls and isolated networks make them inaccessible.
Private addresses are IP address spaces that have been reserved for internal use. These addresses
are not accessible over the Internet (non-routable) because network routers within the Internet will
not allow access to them.
The following address spaces have been reserved for internal use. It is best to use these IP
addresses and not make up your own.
• Class A: 10.0.0.0 to 10.255.255.255
• Class B: 127.16.0.0 to 172.31.255.255
• Class C: 192.168.0.0 to 192.168.255.255
For example, users inside a company access the Domino server based on its assigned IP address, which is
a private address (192.168.1.1). Internet users must access the Domino server through a NAT router,
which converts the private address to one of its static public addresses (130.20.2.2). Therefore, a Notes
client accessing the server from the Internet uses the public address.
Hierarchical naming for servers and users
Hierarchical naming is the cornerstone of Domino security; therefore planning it is a critical
task. Hierarchical names provide unique identifiers for servers and users in a company. When
you register new servers and users, the hierarchical names drive their certification, or their
level of access to the system, and control whether users and servers in different organizations
and organizational units can communicate with each another.
Before you install Domino servers, create a diagram of your company and use the diagram to
plan a meaningful name scheme. Then create certifier IDs to implement the name scheme
and ensure a secure system.
A hierarchical name scheme uses a tree structure that reflects the actual structure of a
company. At the top of the tree is the organization name, which is usually the company name.
Below the organization name are organizational units, which you create to suit the structure of
the company; you can organize the structure geographically, departmentally, or both.
For example, the Acme company created this diagram for their servers and users:
Looking at Acme's diagram, you can see where they located their servers in the tree. Acme
decided to split the company geographically at the first level and create certifier IDs for the
East and West organizational units. At the next level down, Acme made its division according
to department.
Components of a hierarchical name
A hierarchical name reflects a user's or server's place in the hierarchy and controls whether
users and servers in different organizations and organizational units can communicate with
each another. A hierarchical name may include these components:
• Common name (CN) -- Corresponds to a user's name or a server's name. All names must
include a common name component.
• Organizational unit (OU) -- Identifies the location of the user or server in the organization.
Domino allows for a maximum of four organizational units in a hierarchical name.
Organizational units are optional.
• Organization (O) -- Identifies the organization to which a user or server belongs. Every
name must include an organization component.
• Country (C) --Identifies the country in which the organization exists. The country is
optional.
An example of a hierarchical name that uses all of the components is:
Julia Herlihy/Sales/East/Acme/US
Typically a name is entered and displayed in this abbreviated format, but it is stored internally
in canonical format, which contains the name and its associated components, as shown below:
CN=Julia Herlihy/OU=Sales/OU=East/O=Acme/C=US.

1. Is it is possible to make 100 id files at a time in Lotus notes
YES using import feature.
2. I am creating an additional mail server in the same domain, is connection documents are must.
YES
3. What is NRPC
Notes remote procedure call (NRPC)
Lotus Notes and Lotus Domino run over the NRPC protocol on top of each supported LAN protocol
__________*
For the 2nd question,
I doubt whether the connection document is required for an additional server in the same domain....I mean,
when an additional server is set up...a connection document is automatically created but not required to
create manually...
Plz discuss...
-------------*
Hi...
Connection Document is must, However its getting created automatically while configuring the additonal
server.
-----------*
1. Is it is possible to make 100 id files at a time in Lotus notes
Yes we can create as many ID Files at a Time using import feature.
2. I am creating an additional mail server in the same domain, is connection documents are must.
No,It is not necessary to create a connection document in same domain. This is because, connection
document is used only for mail routing and scheduling the Replication. In case of same domain mail routing
goes automatically as all the server are going to share the same domino directory. So the the purpose of
connection doc in same domain is only scheduling the replication between servers if we want(not
necessary).
The concept of connection document is useful amongs the server that belongs to the different domain.
3. What is NRPC
Notes remote procedure call is the default communication protocol for Lotus Notes uses to transfer the
message from one domino server to other server. It works on port 1352.
--------------------*
correction on question 2
if the notes servers are on the same NNN (NotesNamedNetwork) you do not need a connection document
for mail routing
