SOUND

WHAT IS SOUND?
 Sound is a form of ENERGY
 Sound is produced when something VIBRATES
 When something vibrates is passes the sound into its surrounding environment

DRAW THIS TABLE AND COMPLETE THE BLANKS

SOUND OBJECT THAT VIBRATES TO PRODUCE SOUND

SPEECH Flaps of skin- Called vocal chords

DRUM Fill in the blank

What vibrates?

PIANO String inside piano- When you hit a key the

string is struck by a hammer
A BELL
RINGING Fill in the blank
What vibrates?

GIVE THIS A GO:

Complete the hearing test. Where is the highest frequency you are able to hear up to?
You may have to listen to some twice using headphones. Do not turn the volume up high,
start really low and increase it if you need to hear the sound.

Mark on the list the highest KHz you can hear up to.
TYPES OF WAVES
 A wave carries energy from one point to another
 There are two types of waves TRANSVERSE and LONGITUDINAL
 TRANSVERSE- Particles move at right angles to the direction of movement of the wave
 LONGITUDINAL- Particles move in the same direction that the wave is moving

FREQUENCY AND PITCH
 A source that vibrates rapidly produces sound of a HIGHER PITCH
 A source that vibrates slowly produces a sound of a LOWER PITCH
 The NUMBER OF VIBRATIONS a sound makes each second is called the FREQUENCY OF A WAVE
 A source that vibrates rapidly produces higher pitch/frequency.
 Frequency is measured in hertz (Hz)

Illustrate these waves

GRAB A BALLOON

DO THIS:

 Grab a partner
 Blow up a balloon and tie it at the end
 Hold it close to your ear
 Have your partner lightly tap on the other side of the balloon

RECORD:
1. Describe what you hear
2. What do you think makes this happen?
SPEED OF SOUND

 The more closely packed the particles in a medium, the faster the
sound wave will travel through it
 This means sound travels FASTER through SOLIDS than through
liquids and faster through LIQUIDS than gases

In your own words:

1. Describe why you think we hear an echo?
2. Where might you hear an echo?

Illustrate:
A room where sound may reflect and echo: A room where sound is absorbed by soft
furnishings like curtains and cushions and couches:

Soft materials like curtain fabric and carpet ABSORB sound and convert it into
heat. This reduces REVERBERATION (length of time a sound is heard).

Think of somewhere we may need absorption of sound like this? State and
explain why.
