…… THIRD SEMESTER B.Tech. ( PE ) MID SEMESTER EXAMINATION (SEPT-2014)
PE-202, THERMAL SYSTEM-I
Time: 1 Hour 30 Mins Max. Marks : 20
Note: Answer All questions. Questions carry equal marks. Steam Tables and charts are allowed. Assume suitable missing data, if any.
1. What is quality of steam, name different methods of measuring it
and describe any one method with proper sketch.
2. Ten kg of water at 450C is heated at a constant pressure of 10 bar
until it becomes superheated vapour at 3000C. Find the changes in volume, enthalpy, internal energy and entropy. 3. What is the compressibility factor, define law of corresponding states. What is Joule-Kelvin coefficient, show that it is zero for an ideal gas. 4. Steam at 20 bar, 3600C is expanded in a steam turbine to 0.08 bar. It then enters a condenser, where it is condensed to saturated liquid water. The pump feeds back the water into the boiler. (i) Assuming ideal processes, find per kg of steam the net work and the cycle efficiency. (ii) If the turbine and the pump have each 80% efficiency, find the percentage reduction in the net work and cycle efficiency. 5. Discuss the various losses of an actual Rankine Vapour Power cycle processes. Give the flow, T-s and h-s diagrams of a Rankine Reheat cycle. Total No. of Pages 01 Roll No. …… THIRD SEMESTER B.Tech.
