Working with Layer Mask

Layer Mask is used to hide parts of an object on a layer. It is also used for non-destructive
editing because it restores the original image.

Using The Brush Tool

1. Open Photoshop CS4 on your computer.

2. Open image1.jpg on the folder instructed by your computer teacher.
3. Click and drag the background layer to the “create a new layer” icon.
4. Click the “Add Layer Mask” icon.
5. Make sure that the Foreground and Background Color is set to Black and White color.
6. If not, press the D key on the keyboard.
7. Select the Layer Thumbnail of the Background copy Layer. Be careful not to select the
Layer Mask layer.
8. Click the Image menu, Adjustments, Hue and Saturation or press Ctrl + U on your
keyboard.

9. Set the color of the following options:

Hue: -180
Saturation: -100
Lightness: 0

10. After applying the values above, your image must turn into a Grayscale image.
11. Select the Layer Mask Thumbnail.
12. Set your foreground color to black and your background color to white.
13. If not yet set, press the X key to toggle between black and white colors.

Using the Brush tool, the black color restores the colored part of the image while the
white color restores the original color of the image.
