Course Outcomes: Through this course students should be able to

• develop the analytical abilities to solve practical problems related to Conduction,


Convection and Radiation

• develop the physical and mathematical concepts of Radiation as a mode of heat transfer

• analyze the different cases of convection based on Empirical Formulations

• analyze the effectiveness of various types of Heat Exchanger

Unit I
Introduction to Heat Transfer and Steady Heat Conduction : Thermodynamics
and Heat Transfer, Modes of Heat Transfer, Effect of temperature on thermal
conductivity of materials, Introduction to combined heat transfer mechanism,
Introduction of general heat conduction equation in Rectangular, Cylindrical
Coordinates with and without heat generation, Concept of thermal resistance,
Electrical Analogy of heat transfer, Thermal contact resistance and overall heat
transfer coefficient, Critical radius of insulation
Unit II
Fins and Transient Heat Conduction : Heat transfer from extended surfaces, Fins
of uniform cross-sectional area, Boundary conditions: Insulated fin tip, Convective
heat transfer through fin tip and Infinite length fin, Effectiveness and efficiency of fin,
Transient heat conduction, Lumped capacitance method for bodies of infinite thermal
conductivity, Time constant, Unsteady state heat conduction in one dimension only

Heat Transfer due to Radiation : Definitions, Concept of Black Body, Kirchoff's
Law, Lambert's Cosine Law, Plank's Distribution Law, Stefan Boltzmann Law, Wein's
Displacement Law, Configuration Factor, Radiation Heat Exchange Between Two
Parallel Plates, Radiation Shielding
Unit IV
Convection : Physical mechanism on convection, Velocity and Thermal boundary
layer, Introduction of differential convection equation, Solution of convection
equations for a flat plate (Blasius Results), Introduction of non-dimensionalized
convection equation, Functional form of friction and convection coefficients, Physical
mechanism of natural convection, Equation of motion and the Grashof Number,
Natural convection over surfaces, Combined Natural and Forced Convection
Unit V
Boiling and Condensation : Boiling: Pool Boiling Regimes, Calculations on Nucleate
Boiling, Critical Heat Flux and Film Boiling, Condensation: Drop wise and Film wise
Condensation, Nusselt Theory of Condensation on a vertical Plate
Unit VI
Heat Exchangers : Types of Heat Exchangers, Overall Heat Transfer Coefficient,
Fouling Factors, Heat Exchanger Analysis: Use of the Log Mean Temperature
Difference, Heat Exchanger Analysis: The Effectiveness-NTU Method
