Introduction

The purpose of this practice test is to prepare students for the Otis-Lennon School Ability Test
(OLSAT) so that they will be familiar with the different types of questions that will appear on
the test. With the help of this practice test, students will learn to follow a row across the page
from left to right, to mark their answers properly, and to change their answers if necessary.
Understanding what to expect on the test will improve your child’s chances of success as well
as help reduce his/her anxiety on test day.

The OLSAT contains 72 questions (36 verbal and 36 nonverbal), and children are allotted
approximately one hour to complete the test. The sample test below contains 10 practice
questions for the OLSAT Level F.

Directions
Read the questions below to your child. If you make a mistake in reading a question, stop,
and say, “No that is wrong. Listen again.”

Children should be allotted approximately one minute to answer the question after it has been
read. As this test is not scored, we recommend that students receive as much assistance as
necessary to correctly solve the questions.

Answers & Explanations
1. Choice 5; The correct answer is gingerly. “Gingerly” means with caution or carefully. In
this sentence because the road was slippery, Annie was careful about crossing it. It is
important to look at the start of the sentence which sets the scene for the rest of the
sentence. The road was slippery, which means that it was dangerous. Therefore we need
to look for the word which means that Annie is paying attention to the danger as she
crosses the road.

2. Choice 3; The correct answer is the letter "T". The sentence reads: "Tasmanian devils are
renowned for their viciousness."

3. Choice 2; The correct answer is $1. The amount of money Lucy had left is equal to the
amount of money she started with minus the amount of money she spent: 20 – 12 – 3 – 4
= 1. Lucy started with $20. First, Lucy paid $12 for her haircut. After she paid $12 she was
left with 20 - 12 = $8. With the $8 Lucy had remaining, she gave the hairdresser a $3 tip
and was then left with 8 - 3 = $5. With the $5 Lucy had remaining, she bought her mom a
flower for $4 and was left with 5 - 4 = $1.

4. Choice 5; The correct answer is runways. All airports must have runways. Without
runways, airplanes cannot land and take off. Airports do not always have lounges,
restaurants, bars, or clothing stores.

5. Choice 2; The correct answer is forgiving. The other four words are synonyms for each
other and mean being unforgiving, or showing a strong desire for revenge.

6. Choice 1; The correct answer is "Richard plays the worst." For this question, it is easier
to start with the last statement, since it compares three of the people. This states that Paul
plays better than John, who plays better than Richard. We would then rank the three of
them this way:

Paul
John OR P>J>R
Richard

Since the first statement tells us that George plays better than John, we can determine
that George is better than Richard as well. This means that Paul, George and John are
better than Richard, making Richard the worst of the group.

7. Choice 3; The relationship between the first two figures is as follows: from the first frame
to the second frame, all the circles become rectangles, one of the small rectangles
disappears, the big shape changes from black to white and the small shapes change from
white to black. The correct answer must have the same relationship with the third figure.
The correct answer will be a large white rectangle with three small black rectangles.

8. Choice 4; In this matrix, In every row the rightmost frame is the combination of the
previous two frames, where white and black combine to make gray. Since in the third row
the first and second frames have complete circles, they overlap each other completely and
create a fully gray circle. The two lines also combine to make an X within the outer circle,
over the inner circle.

9. Choice 1; The correct answer is 29. In this series each number is greater than the
previous number by 1 more than the previous difference. The pattern is: +1, +2, +3, +4, ....
The last 2 numbers in the series are 16 and 22. 22 is greater than 16 by 6. The next
number should be larger than 22 by 7 (which is 1 more than the previous difference of 6).
[...16, 16+6=22, 22+7=29, ...] Therefore, 29 is the correct answer.

10. Choice 4; The correct answer is 22. The numbers in the first box are 7, 14 and 21.
The numbers in the second box are 3, 6 and 9. In both sets, the first number is multiplied
by 2 to get the second number, and then the first number is multiplied by 3 to get the third
number ((1st No) × 2, (1st No) × 3). In the first box: 7 × 2 = 14 and 7 × 3 = 21. In the
second box: 3 × 2 = 6 and 3 × 3 = 9. The same relationship will hold in the box with the
question mark. In this box we are missing the second number. Since the first number is
multiplied by 2 to get the second number, and the first number is 11, we have: 11 × 2 = 22,
so 22 is the correct answer. (Notice that 11 × 3 = 33 which is the third number in the set).
Alternatively, we could look at the set of each box as a series of multiples; in the first box
we have multiples of 7 (7, 14, 21), in the second box we have multiples of 3 (3, 6, 9), and
in the third box we have multiples of 11 (11, 22, 33). In the box we are given 11 and 33.
We are missing the number in between them which is 22.
