Pictogram
A pictogram or pictograph is a symbol
representing a concept, object, activity,
place or event by illustration. Pictogra-
phy is a form of writing in which ideas
are transmitted through drawing. Such
pictograms are characterized by their
simplified style, which omits all details
that are unnecessary to the desired
communication. It is the basis for some
of the earliest forms of structured
written languages, such as Cuneiform
and, to some extent, Hieroglyphs.

Pictograms are still in use as the main

medium of written communication in
some non-literate cultures in Africa,
the Americas, and Oceania. Pictograms
are also often used as simple symbols
by contemporary societies providing a
form of communication that is free of
language-specific elements and thus
can be understood by all. Efforts have
been made to develop standard picto-
grams for use throughout the world,
reflecting the increasing needs and
desires of humankind to have relation-
ships and communicate with all people
without barriers, such as those created
by diverse languages.

Pictograms connect
with people through
simplified icons.

What I chose for my pictogram theme.

space
'Outer space' begins about 100
km above the Earth, where the
shell of air around our planet
disappears. With no air to
scatter sunlight and produce a
blue sky, space appears as a
black blanket dotted with stars.
Space is usually regarded as
being completely empty. But
this is not true. The vast gaps
between the stars and planets
are filled with huge amounts of
thinly spread gas and dust.
Even the emptiest parts of
space contain at least a few
hundred atoms or molecules
per cubic metre.

Space is also filled with many

forms of radiation that are
dangerous to astronauts. Much
of this infrared and ultraviolet
radiation comes from the Sun.
High energy X-rays, gamma
rays and cosmic rays – parti-
cles travelling close to the
speed of light – arrive from
distant star systems.

Why space?

I’ve been liking astronomy

since I was a teenager
and it has become a big part of
my life. Even the things I create
or draw,they simply have something
related to the planets, stars, galaxy...etc.

I chose this as my concept to show

my interest and liking to these
kind of subjects, and to let people
know what are the things we
can find in space.

sketches and concepts

Came up with three different

concepts and styles.
Nikki Wong Page 11

Then, I decided to stick

with one.

Progress

I chose a navy blue color

as my background.
I found both pink-beige and
yellow go well with navy
blue, so I stuck with both
of the colors. I then,
decided to use white as
the outline of the pictogram.

Most of the artists I found

online prefered using grid
to guide them to create
a conistent and well ordered
pictograms. That was when
I had decided to use the grids
as my guideline before I
created my pictograms.
Nikki Wong Page 14

I started by using rectangular

tool to create the body of
the rocket. To prevent
the outlines from not
noticeable, I added 2 more pt.

To create more corners,

I used pentool for extra
pointers, then extended the
head of the rocket. Including
everything else that needed
to be extended. I used
direct selection tool to
readjust my desired shape.
Nikki Wong Page 15

After that, I transformed the

shapes that I wanted by
reflecting. It can be reflected
both horizontally and vertically.

As of personal preference,
I rounded the corners because
I believed that the pictograms
looked less “harsh” if they were
rounded.
Nikki Wong Page 16

The rounded corners made

the pictogram looked more
visually accepted, in my
opinion.

I then continued using all those

methods to create the window
of the rocket.
Nikki Wong Page 17

I decided to use the pink-beige

shade to color some parts of the
rocket.

Another personal preference,

I rounded the tips of the lines to
make my pictograms consistent.
Nikki Wong Page 18

Some of the lines were

“broken off”, that was
another personal preference
to create my pictogram style.

To make it look more like it

belonged to the space theme,
I added tiny crosses and stars.
Nikki Wong Page 19

Tiny stars and crosses were

created with the same
color palette that I chose for
this theme.

For my fonts, I downloaded

“Typograph Pro” that I had
found suitable for this theme.
I tried using SemiBold, with
the size of 24 pt.
Nikki Wong Page 20

With the same consistency, style, color and methods,

I finished half of the pictograms.
However some of the pictograms weren’t
visually accepted.

This document was experimented

for a test print. The colors and outlines
turned out to be alright.
Nikki Wong Page 21

I changed the concept of my

Solar System pictogram
because it didn’t seem to be
logical in size.

Solar System was created

differently but with the same
method.
Nikki Wong Page 22

I first thought of a concept of

a Black Hole and asked for
others to take a look if it was
visually recognizable. Most
of the people didn’t get it right.
That was my cue to change the
concept.

Since the Black Hole and Milky

Way looked a bit alike, I
decided to use the same shape
and size, I added a bit of stars
here and there to make it look
like an actual Milky Way.
Surprisingly, it did.
Nikki Wong Page 23

Few researches and references

were made to create the last two
pictograms. I finally manged to
finish everything with the same
concept, style and method.

For my theme title, I used the same

font and with the size of 102 pt.
Nikki Wong Page 24

Couldn’t finish everything

without a watermark.

I also added tiny stars on

the theme title.

Finished outcome with grids.

Final outcome.
