Good & Bad Reading Habits

Regarding reading process, there are some good habits which will increase a child’s reading comprehension.
These habits are based on a concept called active reading: if a child’s brain is frequently occupied in the act of
reading, the child will learn faster and more easily. The following reading habits are good strategies for active
reading.
Use the cover up. Many words together on the same page confuse many students. To resolve this, a small
card can be used to cover everything except the sentence that the child is reading. When they finish a
line, they move the card down, uncovering the next line.
Read aloud. Another way to help verbal processing can be reading aloud a text.
Use three-color highlighting. Take a yellow marker and highlight a sentence or some important words.
Highlights are a cheap and easy way to integrate visual memory into the reading process. Buy your child
three colours and have them assign a different colour to the main points, supporting details, and terms
of the reading.
Take margin notes. Irritable old librarians hate this habit, but books are supposed to be written on –children
should write notes, questions, comments, or draw pictures in the margins.
Write or talk out summaries. Making children take a few minutes to either write up a summary or talk it out
will help them retain the written information and ultimately help them remember it during an exam.
Consider reading notes. Reading notes are great for some kids, horrible for others. The problem with
reading notes is that for some kids, if they take notes, they’ll never finish the reading. By contrast,
reading notes can obviously help them retain and remember the written information. Children should
then be limited to writing only one sentence about a paragraph and summaries at the end of sections or
chapters.

To really eliminate a bad habit, you should replace it with a good one. The following are some of the bad
habits which tend to cause people to read slowly. Ask yourself whether you are guilty of any of the following:
Moving your lips when you read. Moving your lips slows you to a fast talking rate, about 150 words per
minute, which is much less than an ordinary reading speed. Put your fingers on your lips to stop the
motion.
Reading one word at a time. Do you think one word at a time, or in phrases? Slow readers tend to see only
one word at a time. Good readers will see several words at a time and their eyes will stop only three or
four times as they move across a page. Reading in idea-phrases speeds your reading and improves your
understanding of what you have read. Mark the phrases in the sentences of a passage, then practice
seeing more than one word at a time.

Changing reading habits is not easy, after all you have been reading that way for many years. It takes several weeks of
conscious effort in order to change bad reading habits.
