1. Introduction
1.1. Purpose

Glasow (2009), expresses his thoughts on improvement by saying that Improvement Begins with
I. The purpose of the topic is to analyze as well as examine the level of improvement that one has
got within himself/herself on some certain skills which are demanded by the Hospitality Industry.
It also helps in finding the true level of potential that can be maximized from one.

1.2. Scope of Study

Soft skills are an important chunk of the success of a hotelier in his career oriented growth and has
to make fuller utilization of the same so that he/she has a fruitful as well as continue to progress in
flying colors (Gridbox, 2009).

1.3. Methods

Different techniques have been used for identification of where the position is and what
improvement has been made. These vary from the self-assessment sheets used as well as through
self-identification and through comments from tutors during the given time.

1.4. Limitations

 Improvement is to be shown in a short period of time

 Improvement, if any is hardly identifiable/ noticeable
 Inability of being able to get ample resources for self-improvement

1.5. Background of study

The hospitality industry itself demands that all the employees in that industry needs to have soft
skills within themselves so as to have a prosperous growth in the industry. The hospitality segment
demands that each and every employee are able to handle each and every situation with confidence
and with the utmost professionalism so as to prevent any disturbances as well as inconvenience to
the guests as well as to others present in that areas. The skills in the hospitality industry does not
have any quantifiable element and thus end up being underestimated and are treated as low skills
(Goldwich, 2010). Another aspect of the soft skills also revolves around the usage of body

language (Goman, 2011). This implies to the following understanding, that from one’s body
language, one can come to know the reactions such as angry, not interested etc. which one can find
out through his gestures, hand and feet movement or even through the eye contact (Goman, 2011).
The soft skills used by the individual would not only come into effect for that person in his
professional life but also in his personal life when he/she goes for a gathering and the displaying
the same behavior which was used in the hotel would leave a mark and would be appreciated for
the same. As it is quoted that “words are sharper than swords” one must use his/her language
carefully depending upon the situations so as to not heart their sentiments (Goldwich, 2010).

2. Research Methodology

A small research has been done by my side to understand on how to improve myself from what I
was. Taking the skills which I have had wished to improve on, the following is what I have gone
through.

 APA 6th Referencing

This is an important aspect of the academic skills that was expected out of each and every
individual at the institute and hence, developing on this skill was considered to be a bit
tedious. I have learnt to improve on this skill through practice. Initially, tests based on the
APA 6th Referencing was conducted and hence came to know where I stand and How to go
about improving it. More projects as well as practicing writing articles and using my IT
Skills to the maximum potential helped me to improve on this. Usage of the Huddersfield
APA 6th Referencing guide has helped me to a large extent.
 Time Management
Managing time was not my cup of tea and I am very bad at it, how I manage time became
a huge concern for me. In my personal life, I tried being more organized, finish work at the
earliest time possible etc. on the other hand, in the practical (Food Production Operations),
having the mice-en-place well in advance, the ingredients as well as the other required
items well within the reach of the hand would help in saving time and cooking the dishes
much faster.
 Confidence Building
I have been able to improve my confidence by being able to be bolder while speaking to a
large audience, have been trying to speak with a clear mind and without any kind of inflow
of thoughts while speaking has helped me to speak with confidence in front of many people.
As well as through public speaking I was able to boost up my confidences.

 Communication Skill
Being able to modulate my voice to speak rather fluently, as well as being slow and audible
enough for the other person to understand the context/ gist of what I am being able to speak
has made me understand the level of fluency in speaking. Being able to present on a given
topic for the Food Production Operations as well as for the practical classes of Property
Management Systems, helped in improving the confidence in me

 Leadership Skill (Creative thinking)

Through different case studies, coming out with ideas which has not even been thought of,
at the same time, hearing what the other person wishes to communicate, and appreciating
ideas, has made me get an idea of the qualities a leader should possess.

3. Findings and Discussions

 APA 6th Referencing

While improving myself in terms of referencing, I had found out that initially, there was a good
improvement, followed by a deep dive fall due to the confusion that came up in terms of
paraphrasing articles as well as giving citations. After repeated practice attempts, all though the
issue with respect to the paraphrasing has decreased, there is still an issue with citation as well as
having the possibility to miss inserting the citations into reference list as well as having a major
chunk of possibility when it comes to citing articles which I ended up forgetting.

One thing I have noticed is that with more and more of practice, the APA 6th Referencing style
could be a rather clear concept.

 Time Management

By creating a ‘time table’ as well as reducing the dependencies on technology, I have been trying
to manage my time properly. Although have not been rather successful in this, without giving up
I kept on trying different techniques to increase the efficiency and reducing the time taken. One
thing I have understood through the self-assessment sheets is that I have to stop letting the ‘time
robbers steal’ time from me, these are in the form of distractions which take away concentration.

 Confidence Building

I had found out that from a timid and rather nervous person who had difficulties in speaking in
front of a large crowd, I am now able to address and handle a small crowd, as well as being bold
when in compared to how I was, I personally did find that there is a lot of difference from what I
was and thus the impact is clearly understood.

 Communication Skills

The ability to lower the speed while speaking, backed with a modulated voice along with a slow
speed, helped me to speak more fluently. By being able to communicate to different sets of people
in the different styles is what I have found in myself after this particular amount of time was
allotted to me.

 Leadership Skills (Creative thinking)

Although never got to be a leader, but got the opportunity to understand what qualities a leader
should possess along with a creative thinking ability, the ability to listen and appreciate other’s
viewpoint as well as listen to their suggestions. These helped in one factor, i.e. the ability to have
a patient as well as a calm mind and not to do anything in a hurry.

4. Conclusions/ Recommendations

On an ending note, it can be concluded that, all though there was a valid improvement over the
period of time, the improvement was not that huge/ easily identifiable for another person but within
oneself. Provided some more extra time, there could be a significant improvement that can be not
only self-experienced but also could be visible for a third person.

But in the long run, the learning as well as the experiences received, in a limelight is worth the
time invested, as speaking from my perspective from the mistakes occurred, I ended up learning
how much one is capable of improving, within the given time. The different soft skills such as the
Confidence building, Communication Skill (Oral), Time management Skills etc. are of prime
importance for a hotelier and in the long run should be able to make fuller utilization of these skills
for the benefit of all.
