Waseda is a member of RU11, a consortium of eleven top
research universities in Japan and is a leader of the
nation's academic research. The university has been
selected by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports,
Science and Technology (MEXT) for its excellent
world-class research and receives various forms of

academia-government collaboration
Waseda is ranked 2nd in Japan for funding received for
private sector contracted research, and has strong
collaborative partnerships with domestic and overseas
private companies (Toyota, Microsoft, Canon, etc.); and
public research institutions (National Institute of
Advanced Science and Technology (AIST), National
Institute of Information and Communications Technology
(NICT), Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)), as
well as government offices, etc.
Extensive research network
Waseda has academic exchange agreements with 616
institutions in 84 countries and regions around the world,
and hosts over 800 international researchers each year.
Waseda published joint papers with 1,472 institutions
(data: SciVal) between 2010-2014, and is the top
university in Japan in the CWTS Leiden Ranking 2015 for
the percentage (37.9%) of international joint papers.
Focus on young researchers
Waseda focuses on young researchers through the
Waseda Institute for Advanced Study* and the Doctoral
Student Career Center**. An increasing number of
Waseda researchers have received recognition and
awards, including the Japan Society for the Promotion of
Science Prize; The Young Scientists’ Commendation for
Science and Technology by the Minister of Education,
Culture, Sports, Science and Technology; the Thomas

Center for International Education (CIE)
CIE is the hub for Waseda’s international education
programs. It provides services to help international
students navigate the local academic and cultural
environment.
Dormitory
International students can apply to live in one of over 20
student dormitories. They provide privacy and security,
while also creating a community where international
students and Japanese students can live and study
together under the same roof.
Library
Waseda University has 21 libraries, including the Central
Library, four campus libraries, other departmental and
laboratory libraries, as well as reading rooms and archive
rooms. These libraries together hold over 5,500,000
volumes, offering both students and faculty an enormous
wealth of information to support their various needs, on
and off campus.

Talk events and lectures
Throughout the year, Waseda holds numerous
on-campus lectures and talk sessions in a wide range of
fields from the sciences to the arts, and hosts many
Japanese and foreign dignitaries, providing students with
the opportunity to hear in person from presidents, prime
ministers and other leaders from countries throughout
the world.

The ICC offers a space where all students are able to
interact – regardless of nationality and culture. Through
this interaction, students develop a new understanding of
