Installation
3.1 Introduction
This chapter contains all the necessary information for the correct
unpacking, positioning, cabling and installation of the UPS.

ALL THE OPERATIONS IN THIS SECTION MUST BE PERFORMED BY

AUTHORISED ELECTRICIANS OR BY QUALIFIED PERSONNEL.
Uninterruptible Power Supplies Ltd. will take no responsibility for any
personal or material damage caused by incorrect cabling or
operations or activities which are not carried out as per the
instructions contained in this Manual.

3.1.1 Receipt of the UPS

The packing container of the UPS protects it from mechanical and
environmental damage. To increase its protection the PowerWAVE 2000 is
wrapped with a plastic sheet.
Upon receiving the UPS, carefully examine the packing container and the
UPS for any sign of physical damage.
Ensure that the received UPS corresponds to the description indicated in
the delivery note.

3.1.2 Nameplate
The technical specifications of the PowerWAVE 2000 are provided on the
nameplate which is situated at the rear of the UPS.

3.2 Unpacking
When unpacking the UPS observe the “FRAGILE” and “ARROW’
indications on the packing container.
Perform the following steps to unpack the UPS:
l Cut the wrappers and remove the packing container by pulling it
upwards
l Remove the plastic cover from the UPS
l Remove the UPS from the pallet
l Retain the packaging materials for future shipment of the UPS
l Examine the UPS for any sign of damage. Notify your supplier
immediately if damage is apparent.

PowerWAVE 2000 - Installation 3-1

3.3 Batteries
The standard batteries of the UPS are internally mounted and will typically
be connected when the UPS is commissioned.
The battery life depends very much on the ambient temperature. A
temperature range between 18 and +23’C will achieve the optimum
battery life.

3.4 Storage
If you plan to store the UPS prior to use, store it unpacked in a clean
environment with a temperature between +5’C to +40°C and humidity of
less than 90%.
If the packing container is removed, protect the UPS from dust.
The UPS is equipped with sealed, maintenance-free batteries, whose
storage capability depends on ambient temperature. It is therefore
important not to store the UPS longer than 6 months at 20°C, 3 months at
3O’C and 2 months at 35’C storage temperature without a battery recharge.
For longer term storage make sure that the battery is fully recharged every
6 months.

3.5 Positioning
The PowerWAVE 2000 is a compact and light UPS and can easily be
moved to its final position.
The UPS should be located where:
l Humidity and temperature are within prescribed limits;
l Fire protection standards are respected;
l Cabling can be performed easily;
l There is enough room to easily operate the UPS and to perform
periodic maintenance (See Figure 3.1).

Figure 3.1: UPS Space Recommendations

3-2 PowerWAVE 2000 - Installation

3.6 Cabling

3.6.1 Overview
The PowerWAVE 2000 UPS comes in three variants, namely:
l 4.5 or 6 kVA with single phase input.
l 4.5 or 6 kVA with three phase input.
l 7.5 or 10 kVA with three phase input.
Although similar methods are used to connect these units, separate,
detailed procedures and diagrams are provided in this section for each case.
Please read the following general information before advancing to the
required cabling procedure:

3.6.2 Input cabling considerations

1. Before you install the UPS ensure that the mains voltage and
frequency correspond to the values indicated on the UPS nameplate.
2. The UPS and its associated equipment must be earthed in accordance
with prescribed IEC Standards, or with the local regulations
3. To achieve the correct operation of the UPS and its additional
equipment it is necessary to provide the input mains lines with
appropriate fuse protection - see the appropriate line diagram for fuse
rating details.
4. The UPS must be connected to the mains through an LV-Distribution
Board having a dedicated mains line (protected with a circuit breaker)
for the UPS.
5. The circuit breaker, or a special line protection should have the
following characteristics:
a) be of the same (or higher) power rating value as indicated on the
nameplate on the rear of the UPS [INPUT POWER] or
b) be in accordance with prescribed IEC Standards or with local
regulations for circuit breakers curve “D”.

NOTE:
All standard Power WAVE 2000 models require only a single cable feed (for
rectifier and bypass). The 7.5 & 10kVA models can however be modified to
accept separate ‘rectifier’ and ‘bypass’ input supplies, each requiring a
separate circuit breaker at the L. V. distribution panel. Please contact
Uninterruptible Power Supplies Limited if a dual-feed is required.

PowerWAVE 2000 - hstallation 3-3

3.6.3 Output cabling considerations
1. Ensure that the rated power [OUTPUT POWER] indicated on the
UPS nameplate is of an equal or (preferably) larger value than the
proposed total load requirements.
2. An external circuit breaker, or other kind of protection, must be
connected between the load and the UPS output to protect the UPS
against overloads and short circuits. The circuit breaker must comply
with the prescribed IEC Standards.
3. It is recommended that a separate output distribution board is
provided for the load. The rating of the circuit breakers or other
protective devices contained on the distribution board should be
suitably sized to protect individual load equipment against overloads
etc.
4. The following values should be indicated on the output distribution
board:
a) maximum total load rating.
b) maximum load rating of the individual load-sockets.

NOTE:
If a common distribution board is used (sockets for Mains and UPS
voltage), ensure that on each socket there is an indication of the
applied vo/tage (“Mains” or ‘UPS”).
5. The UPS output distribution system equipment must be properly
earthed in accordance with prescribed IEC Standards, or with the
local regulations.

3.6.4 General safety

When installing the UPS ensure that the following conditions apply
during all cabling operations:

1. No mains voltage is present (post safety warnings if necessary).

2. The load equipment is shut down.
3. Ensure the UPS is completely shut down and voltage-free:
Turn the ‘MAINTENANCE BYPASS’ switch to position ‘0’ (rear
of UPS).
Open the battery fuses (rear of the UPS).
Press the red ‘ON/OFF’ switch on the Control Panel to position
‘OFF’.

Operation
4.1 Commissioning
The PowerWAVE 2000 UPS is a high quality electronic machine that must
be commissioned by a fully trained and authorised Uninterruptible Power
Supplies Ltd. field service engineer before being put into use.
The commissioning of the UPS involves the connection of the UPS battery,
the checking of the electrical installation and operating environment of the
UPS, the controlled start-up and testing of the UPS and customer training.

Any PowerWAVE 2000 UPS system not commissioned by an

Uninterruptible Power Supplies Ltd. field service engineer must be
considered an electrical hazard and Uninterruptible Power Supplies
Ltd. accepts no responsibility for its safe operation or the safety of
any personnel. Additionally, the manufacturer’s warranty is
immediately invalidated if the UPS is put into use before it has been
correctly commissioned.

4.2.2 Control Panel push-button and switch details

‘ON/OFF’ Switch
As its name suggests, the main ON/OFF switch is used by the operator to
turn on and turn off the UPS. The switch is mounted behind a hinged plastic
cover to prevent its accidental operation.

‘Alarm RESET’ push-button

This button serves to silence the audible alarm.

UPS Control’ push-button

The ‘UPS Control’ button serves to activate the remote control by means
of a PC. This permits the user remotely to:
l choose the UPS operating mode (‘ON LINE’ or ‘Line Interactive’).
. test the battery.
. reset the alarms.
When remote control is selected (the ‘REMOTE’ led illuminated) it is not
possible to change the UPS operating mode from the UPS Control Panel.
If the ‘Mode’+ ‘Battery Test’ + ‘UPS Control’ push-buttons are pressed
simultaneously and held for 2 sec. the UPS will switch-over from ‘Local’
to ‘Remote’ control. This combination of 3 buttons protects against
accidental activation. By repeating the same procedure the UPS will switch
back to ‘Local’ control.

‘Mode’ push-button
This button is used to transfer the UPS between ‘ON LINE’ and ‘Line
Interactive’ operating modes. The selected operating mode will be
indicated by the corresponding LED-Indicator.

4.3 Operating Modes

4.3.1 “On-Line” (lnverter Mode)

The ON-LINE-Mode is the UPS-Operating Mode in which the load is
supplied through the RECTIFIER and INVERTER. In the unlikely event of
an inverter fault or overload condition the UPS transfers the load
automatically, and without interruption, to the static bypass-mains supply
(transfer time = 0).
The ON-LINE-Mode provides the highest degree of protection, especially
in the event of a mains disturbance or mains failure, and is the operating
mode recommended if the critical loads (computer systems) will not
tolerate any interruption of the supply (not even the shortest).

4.3.2 “Line Interactive” (Econ Mode 1 Off Line)

In the Line Interactive-Mode the load is supplied directly from the mains
through the static bypass. In the event of a mains failure the load is
automatically transferred to the inverter.
The Line Interactive-Mode is recommended only if the loads can tolerate
interruptions of 3-5 mS (transfer time from Line Interactive-Mode to ON-
LINE-Mode).
The battery charger remains ON during Line Interactive-Mode operation to
maintain a high state of battery charge.
Using the control panel ‘Mode’ push-button (see 4. l), the UPS may be
easily be transferred between the ON-LINE and Line Interactive modes.

4.3.3 “Maintenance Bypass”

The Bypass-Mode through the maintenance bypass is used only in
emergency situations.
In this mode the load is supplied directly from the mains power supply via
the Maintenance Bypass switch, located on the rear of the UPS, while
making it possible to shut down the UPS in a controlled manner.
THE LOAD MUST ALWAYS BE TRANSFERRED TO THE BYPASS-
MODE THROUGH THE MAINTENANCE BYPASS WHEN IT IS
NECESSARY TO SHUTDOWN THE UPS (E.G. REPAIR, BATTERY
REPLACEMENT ETC.).

IF THE UPS IS OPERATING IN THE BYPASS MODE THROUGH THE

BYPASS SWITCH THE LOAD WILL NOT BE PROTECTED IN THE
EVENT OF A MAINS FAILURE. IT IS THEREFORE STRONGLY
RECOMMENDED TO SWITCH OVER TO THE ON-LINE-MODE (INK
ON) OR LINE INTERACTIVE-MODE (ECON. MODE) AS SOON AS
POSSIBLE.

PowerWAVE 2000 - Operation 4-5

5
5.1 Introduction

ALL THE OPERATIONS IN THIS SECTION MUST BE PERFORMED BY

AUTHORISED ELECTRICIANS OR BY QUALIFIED INTERNAL
PERSONNEL.

To ensure optimum operation of the UPS and continuous and efficient

protection of the connected load it is recommended that the operational
parameters and calibrations of the UPS and the batteries are checked every
12 months.

5.2 User Responsibilities

There are no user serviceable parts contained within the UPS so the
maintenance responsibilities of the user are minimal. To maximise the
useful working life and reliability of the UPS and its batteries, the
environment in which the UPS operates should be kept cool and dust free.

5.3 Routine Maintenance

The UPS is designed to receive regular preventative maintenance
inspections. These preventative maintenance inspections are essential to
ensure that both the useful working life and the reliability of the UPS are
maximised. When the UPS is commissioned, the commissioning field
service engineer will attach a service record book to the side of the UPS and
this will be used to record the full service history of the UPS.
Preventative maintenance inspections involve working inside the UPS
which contains hazardous AC and DC voltages. Only Uninterruptible
Power Supplies Ltd. trained and authorised field service engineers are fully
aware of all of the hazardous areas within the UPS.
During a preventative maintenance inspection the field service engineer
will carry out the following checks:
Site/environment conditions
Integrity of electrical installation
Cooling airflow
Rectifier operation and calibration
Inverter operation and calibration
Static switch operation
Battery status
Load characteristics

PowerWAVE 2000 - Maintenance 5-1
