1. What is the definition of significance level?

2. What are type I and type II error?

3. For each of the questions below, state the hypothesis then using suitable test to conclude
the result at α = 0.05.
a. A car manufacture factory manager stated that, the mean cost of a car is RM 45,100. A
survey done by a researcher based on 120 samples show that the mean cost for a car is RM
43,260 and population standard deviation is RM 5,230.

b. The average farm size in Malaysia is 445 acres. Below are the data for 26 farms.

c. Consumption of water by a person per day is 46.3 liter. A survey based on 23 people found

60% mark. Below are the data collected by school principal from 40 students.

4. For each of the questions below, state the hypothesis then using suitable test to conclude
the result at α = 0.01.
a. United Nation mentioned that mean accident number in the world is less than 25,000 case
per year. A researcher re-check back the data from 56 countries and the mean of accident is
23,132 with population standard deviation 3,215.

b. A researcher claims that the yearly consumption of soft drink per person is 52 gallons. In a

sample of 300 randomly selected people, the mean of the yearly consumption is 56.7
gallons. The standard deviation of population is 29.1 gallons.

c. A property agent mentioned that the house mean price in Petaling Jaya is RM 800,000. A
customer check the price for the 50 houses at Petaling Jaya and get the result with mean
789,000 and population standard deviation 143,140.

d. According to MOH, mean of patient admitted to hospital within a week is 56.5 people.
Below are the number of patient admitted to hospital within a week based on 12 hospitals.

5. For each of the questions below, state the hypothesis then using suitable test to conclude
the result at α = 0.05.
a. An agent claims that mean salary of dentistry is higher than pharmacy. A survey of 22
dentistry found that mean salary is RM 11,500 and sample standard deviation RM 1,451,
and a survey of 26 pharmacy found that mean salary is RM 10,312 and sample standard
deviation RM 1,253.

b. Ali would like to confirm the mean life time for a two different brand batteries. Below are
the result obtained by Ali for brand X and brand Y batteries.

the result obtained by Ali for brand X and brand Y batteries.

sample standard deviation 1.4 hours, and a survey of 26 marketing agents found that mean
of working hours is 10.6 hours and sample standard deviation 2.3 hours.

1. A recent survey found that 68.6% of the population own their cars. In a random sample of
150 heads of people, 92 responded that they owned their cars. At α = 0.05 level of
significance, does that suggest a difference from the national proportion?

2. A journal mentioned that 40% of the adult population participate in computer online games

during leisure time. A random sample of 180 adults found that 65 engaged in computer
online games. At α = 0.01 level of significance, is there sufficient evidence to conclude
that the proportion differs from 40%?

3. A report by the NCAA states that 57.6% of football injuries occur during practices. A head
trainer claims that this s too high for his conference, so he randomly selects 36 injuries and
find that 17 occurred during practices. Is his claims correct at α = 0.05?

4. Men’s health magazine stated that 17% of men said they used exercise to reduce stress. A
random sample of 100 men was selected and 10 said that they used exercise to relieve
stress. Conclude the statement by Men’s health magazine.

5. Malaysia police traffic department claims that 54% of fatal car accidents are caused by
driver error. A researcher studies 30 randomly selected accidents and finds that 14 were
caused by driver error. Using α = 0.05, is that Malaysia police traffic department’s
statement is true?

6. In a sample of 90 Malaysian, 60% wished that they are rich. In a sample of 100
Singaporean, 65% wished that they are rich. At α = 0.01, is there a difference in the
proportions?

7. In a sample of 200 students, 45% said that they missed class because of personal illness.
Based on 2 years ago result, a sample of 150 students, 36% said that they missed class
because of personal illness. At α = 0.05, is there a difference in the proportion?

8. A survey found that 83% of the men questioned preferred computer-assisted instruction to
lecture and 75% of the women preferred computer-assisted instruction to lecture. There
were 170 individuals in each sample. At α = 0.05, test the claim that there is no difference
in the proportion of men and the proportion of women who favor computer-assisted
instruction over lecture.

9. A researcher claims that the standard deviation of the number of case attacked by shark is
less than 35. If a sample of 11 randomly selected and show that sample standard deviation

10. A random sample of football player is recorded as data below.

At α = 0.01, is there sufficient evidence that the sample standard deviation of all football
player is less than 20 kg.

Part 3
1. A medical researcher wishes to determine if the way people pay for their medical
prescriptions is distributed as follows: 60% personal funds, 25% insurance, 15% Medicare.
A sample of 170 people found that 98 paid with their own money, 40 paid by insurance
and 32 by Medicare. At α = 0.01, state the hypothesis and conclude the result.

2. According to Malaysia blood bank, percentage of Malaysian blood type is follows: 43% O,
42% A, 12% B and AB 3%. If the blood donation campaign at a PJ town, people who
donated blood have 123 people O, 143 people A, 40 people B and 14 people AB, conclude
the percentage of blood type is same as Malaysia blood bank record or not at α = 0.01.

3. Below are the record for the fruit that Malaysia like to eat.
