THE STUDENTS OF CHINESEPREFACE
In 1896 T began to collect odd soraps of Chinese
Folklore and published my Pekingese Rhymes.
The ninety nine tales contained in this book
and written down in mandarin dialect belong
doubtlessly to the folklore,
However, the natural aversion that every: China
man able to sirite and read entertains against the
colloquiat, fed to the fect that these tales which are
so commonly known and quoted. are 10 be found
in literary style only. 2
FT browght these, which I have chosen among
‘thousands, into mandarin and I hope that the Stu-
dent of colloquial Chinese may derive some benefit :
from a reading book so easily divided into many 3
daily lessons and Bringing some element af mirth
{nto the sad and dreary task of learning Chinese.
