GM FOOD SHOULDN’T BE BANNED 2
improve the traits of certain foods like making crop resistant plants to pest and diseases. US
scientists invented a method called recombinant DNA technology in 1972 which allowed
scientists to transfer genetic information from one organism to another by altering the DNA
of a virus. This has led to production of new plants, animals and vaccines. However, critics
argue that the side effects of GM foods have not been studied thoroughly enough.
GM food should be banned because no thorough research has been done to reveal its
side effects. According experts, individuals who consume GM food are likely to develop
cancer. Many individuals do not support the idea of transferring animal genes into plants and
likewise for example Muslims. Increase in GM foods will also make developing countries to
depend on industrial countries because of the constant food production from them.
GM foods should not be banned due to the benefit it comes with. It has been posed by
researchers as a solution for food issues worldwide. This has helped in feeding the growing
global population and fighting hunger. GM has great potential in providing solutions to
many of the agricultural issues that most farmers and consumers face today which includes
malnutrition and famine. It has also increased the yielding capacity of crops with extra
nutritional value and saving farmer’s time and money by creating pest-resistant and
herbicide-tolerant plants.
Insects and weeds are some of the major threats that most framers face with any
crops. Pesticides and herbicides have been used to control this which has turned out to be
toxic and harmful to consumers. Nevertheless, scientists have created plants that are
themselves resistant to these threats for example corn which are commonly modified to be
insect resistant.
GM FOOD SHOULDN’T BE BANNED 3
In a nutshell, GM food shouldn’t be banned because it is the only solution to for food
issues worldwide now. It has also helped in increasing food production which has led to
sufficient supply of food to many nations. This leaves it unquestionable as it is the most
