Researchers analyzed over 15 million tweets from about 230,000 Russian Twitter accounts between 2014 and 2015 to identify characteristics of Russian bots. They found that bots were more likely to tweet from websites rather than mobile devices, retweet more often than humans, and tweet news headlines without links. Over 67% of accounts active in both study periods were determined to be bots, which tweeted over 50% of messages about Russian politics, especially around the Crimea annexation. However, bots were found to spread both pro- and anti-regime information.
