Cloned Beef Flap Spreads Alarm In Britain

NEWS THAT meat and milk from the
offspring of cloned cattle – illegal to sell
here without proper authorization – may
have made their way into the UK food
chain has set hands wringing in Britain, a
country still sensitive from its experience
with mad cow disease.
And while scientists made the rounds of
breakfast TV shows to assure consumers
that the products were safe, the flap illus-
trates what industry-watchers say are the
pressures and regulatory loopholes push-
ing meat taken from the progeny of clones
and genetically engineered foods into the
European market, whether citizens like it
or not – or even know about it.
Food safety officials said last month
they are investigating how a bull from the
embryo of a cloned US cow came to be
slaughtered and eaten in Britain, where
farmers must apply to sell such meat.
They’re also investigating whether milk
from a cow bred from a clone made its
way into the food chain.
Britain’s Food Standards Agency and
leading scientists say there are no safety
concerns about such milk and meat – but
the issue dominated the news bulletins,
with television news programs replaying
file footage of sickly cattle struggling with
mad cow disease.

Protests Over
SAT Tests For
11-Year-Olds
SCHOOL test results for 11-year-
olds were released last month across
England, and one result was certain:
A large number of educators and
parents consider the tests a waste
of time.
The results of the Standard Assessments
Tests, or SATs, revived a long-running
debate about whether the government’s
determination to rank schools based on
standardized tests does anything to improve
education. The test has no relation to SATs
in the United States, which are used to get
into college.
The Department for Education said 4,005
of 15,515 English primary schools chose
to boycott the tests. Some teachers said the
shifts in percentages did not reflect students’
performance in school.
“The marginal shifts in percentages paint
a picture of the vagaries of test questions
rather than a change in standards,” said
Christine Blower of the National Union
of Teachers, which opposes the exams.
“Teachers know from their own assessment
that a minority of children need intensive
support ... they don’t need irrelevant tests
to tell them that.”
Blower said the key problem was that
the test results are used to rank schools by
their exam scores.

Amazon Walker Finishes
Marathon Trek
IT’S BEEN a long, long walk for Ed Stafford,
who last month finally completed his quest to
walk the river Amazon from its beginnings in
Peru, to its outward pouring in to the Atlantic
at Belem on the Brazilian coast. He originally
started his 4,000 mile journey on April 2,
2008, with a fellow Briton, who decided
after three months enough was enough. Ed
then teamed up with Peruvian, Gadiel “Cho”
Sanchez-Rivera, 31, and they completed
the walk together. Uncertain welcomes from
isolated villages, strange creatures, thick
unyielding jungle, 100-degree-plus heat, and
a botfly that embedded itself in his head were
some of the aggravations he suffered during
his 860 days of walking.
Ed Stafford, 34, hails from Mowsley in
Leicestershire, a former officer in British
Army who served in Afghanistan. He left the
forces in 2002. He was soon playing for the
local rugby club, but was always on the look-
out for something a little more adventurous to
do. His new career as a stock-broker was not
filling that void. Originally, he thought that the
Amazon would take around a year to walk,
but the mountainous ravines of Peru and the
tangled rain forests of Brazil soon had him
contemplating a much longer journey. After
splashing in the sea at Crispim beach with a
large bottle of champagne, he was soon on
a flight back to the UK where a pint of good

of the incident, said the whirling blades had
come very close to nearby houses.
Before sentencing Jafari, 58, Judge
Michael Roach called it a “deliberate and
much more a reckless and dangerous act.”
Sir Winston’s Teeth Take Bite
Out Of Auction Bid
A SET of Winston Churchill’s dentures sold
at auction for $23,700 at Keys auction-house
in Aylsham, recently. Nigel Cudlipp, whose
father Derek, made a series of dentures for
Britain’s wartime leader, put the false teeth up
for sale. Apparently, Churchill never got used
to wearing dentures and would bite down
hard on them causing them to break or if the
war was going badly, he’d pull them from his
mouth and chuck them the other side of the
room. As a consequence, he always needed
sets made and in reserve for the various
mishaps that often occurred. He lived in fear
of losing his teeth and always carried a spare
pair around in his pocket wherever he was.
For all his gum and dental troubles, Churchill
remained impressed by his dentist Eric Fish,
and even nominated him for a knighthood.
Churchill memorabilia is bringing big prices
at auction-houses across Britain, where
recently, Keys sold an ashtray and a half
smoked cigar for $6,200.

Castle Damaged By Vandals
Might Not Be Repaired Again
THE WELSH heritage preservation agency
Cadw, is not happy that the money and time
they spent in renovating Bronllys Castle at
Talgarth in Powys, was unappreciated by
vandals who pried off some of the ancient
stones at the top of the 80ft high keep, and
threw them to the ground. Cadw had only just
finished a major conservation programme
there, and says it will probably have to close
the castle again for more repairs.
Bronllys Castle was built in 1144, and
was once the ancestral home of the Earls
of Hereford. After the Welsh independence
wars, Bronllys lost its importance, fell into
disrepair and by the 1500s had become a
ruin. The State took it over in 1962. While
most of the outer buildings have gone, the
80ft Tower and Keep allows visitors a fine
view of the Welsh countryside. Cadw has
informed local police, but are outraged that
Wales’ historical heritage could be treated
so frivolously.

A BRITISH ex-pat living in Thailand, thought
he’d earned an easy £30,000 by flying back
to Britain, killing Sharon Birchwood, 52, of
Ashtead, Surrey, at her ex-husband’s re-
quest; and then flying back immediately after
the deed was done. But a single fingerprint
on a glass was enough to identify him as
a man with a record, and police detectives
flew out to Thailand to retrieve his DNA.
Both pieces of evidence were enough to lay
a case against Paul Cryne, 62, who claimed
innocence at the Old Bailey. A jury however,
found him guilty. Judge Jeremy Roberts
ordered him to serve at least 28 years and
six months in jail and added, “You may well
spend the rest of your life behind bars.”
The case was the classic insurance fraud
coupled with the money expected from the
sale of the ex-wife’s home. Mrs Birchwood
who walked with the aid of a stick was
strangled to death by a length of electri-
cal wire. The divorce had been extremely
amicable and the wife had left everything to
her former husband in her will. But Graham
Birchwood, 54, could not wait and was look-
ing for ways to pay mounting business debts.
Birchwood was found guilty at Croydon
Crown Court, last year, and was sentenced
to 32 years in prison.
Rainbow The Hen Lays
A Big Double Egg
RAINBOW the hen, laid a monster egg last
month. Jeremy Power of Cheltenham, keeps
a couple of chickens in the back garden, while
a recent fresh egg breakfast was a sight to
behold. Rainbow had dropped one large egg
that weighed in at 130g or 4.6oz, that twice the
size of a normal egg (56.7g or 2oz).
The egg also had another fully developed
egg inside.
“This one has really caught us by sur-
prise,” said Power. “It’s almost like a comedy
egg, it’s so big.”
The Guinness Book of Records says the
biggest chicken egg ever laid, was dropped
by a white leghorn at Vineland, New Jersey
in February of 1956, that weighed in at
454g or 16oz. It had a double yolk and a
double shell.
Scottish Deemed Pub The
Most Remote In Britain
ACROSS from the Isle of Skye, on the Knoy-
dart Peninsula, lies the small village of Inverie
and a pub that is regarded as the most remote
watering hole in mainland Britain. Refresh-
ment at the Old Forge is an 18 miles journey
if you don’t live in Inverie, and a seven mile
sea crossing on the local ferry. Ian and Jackie
Robertson have run the old Inn for twenty
years, put have recently put it up for sale
with an asking price of around £800,000.
The Knoydart Peninisula is renowned as
one of the wildest and isolated landscapes
in Britain, and the Old Forge has become a
beacon of warmth and welcome amidst the
wind and heather.
It’s not your regular burger and chips
joint either, boasting a gourmet dining room
with starters like Mackerel and Horseradish
Mousse, or Wild Boar Pate with Apricot
Chutney. Its main course includes locally
caught fish and crab and of course the tra-
ditional haggis, that can all be washed down
with a pint of “Pretender or Hebridean Gold,”
courtesy of a local mini-brewery. Walkers
and hikers can get a shower at the pub, but
there are no rooms to let.
The Village of Inverie has an adult popula-
tion of around one hundred, but offers self-
catering flats and B&B accommodations. It
has a post office and a primary school. Jackie
Robertson says they have loved living in this
beautiful part of Scotland, but are looking to
retire from the hospitality business.
Oldest Barber In Britain,
Jack, Dies 94
BRITAIN’S’s oldest barber died last month
at the age of 94. Jack Wardell of Tumble
in Carmathernshire, learned his hair-cutting
skills as a thirteen-year-old teenager and
opened his own barber’s shop in a cor-
rugated iron shed five years later. He cut
hair for some eighty years. Local councilor
Clive Scourfield, always popped by for a
short-back-and-sides and remembered the
experience as a chatty social scene where
local gossip was part of a good haircut.
Known as “Jack the Barber,” he didn’t
fully retire until his 91st birthday.
“It was the social inter-activity that kept
him working so long,” said the Councilor.
Diana Dors’ Original 1949

Diana Dors was born in Swindon as Diana
Mary Fluck. After coming out of RADA, she

never disputed. Her curvaceous appearance,
sexy personality and a ready smile with hang-
ing locks of platinium blonde hair made her

She appeared in a plethora of films and a
multitude of television appearances before
her death through ovarian cancer in 1984,
at the age of 52.

Fined In Court

Apologizes For
Crash Message
PASSENGERS on a British Airways flight
from London to Hong Kong were mistak-
enly told to prepare for a crash landing,
causing panic onboard.
The carrier said last month it had apolo-
gized for causing customers distress after
an emergency message was accidentally
triggered.
Passengers were warned during a flight
that the Boeing 747 may crash into the
sea. They heard the message: “This is an
emergency. We may shortly need to make
an emergency landing on water.”
Michelle Lord, who was onboard, told
Britain’s The Sun tabloid that her fellow
travelers were deeply frightened when the
taped warning was played over the airliner
address system.
“People were terrified. We all thought
we were going to die,” said Lord, 32.
British Airways said cabin crew quickly
reassured passengers that the flight was not
in danger. The company said it is investi-
gating how the error happened.
“Our cabin crew immediately made
an announcement following the message
advising customers that it was played in
error and that the flight would continue as
normal,” the airline said in a statement.

A GOVERNMENT agency says the
number of long-term immigrants
entering the United Kingdom fell 4
percent last year. But, because fewer
people left, Britain still gained more
people through migration in 2009 than
the previous year.
The Office for National Statistics
said last month an estimated 567,000
immigrants arrived in 2009, down
from 590,000 in 2008. Last year’s
figure included 91,000 British citizens,
including people born abroad to a Brit-
ish parent and British natives return-
ing from long-term residence abroad.
The number of people leaving Brit-
ain was down 13 percent to 371,000
for the year.
The report says the number of im-
migrants from the Czech Republic,
Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania,
Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia fell 35
percent to 52,000.

The result? A list of wild ideas on how to
save money – proposals that Treasury chief
George Osborne insists will be seriously
considered as he draws up a five-year
austerity plan.
Osborne wants to save £30bn to quickly
reduce Britain’s huge national debts, racked
up as the previous government bailed out
banks and launched stimulus programs
during the global financial crisis.
He has ordered government depart-
ments to prepare for budget cuts of 25
percent to raise £30bn in savings and will
announce details of his plans in a major
speech in October.
Ministers have already announced a
slate of cuts – axing 700 new schools,
halting payments to pregnant women to
fund healthier diets and scrapping £10bn
worth of projects agreed under ex-Prime
Minister Gordon Brown.

LPRs Should CYA, Err CYB!
THE ACRONYM CYA is commonly used in
the US, particularly in office settings, as a
reminder to proactively protect oneself from
the potential consequences of an intended,
unintended, or even unforeseen event oc-
curring. For purposes of this article, I have
slightly reformed the acronym to CYB, or
“cover your bum” as a gentler reminder to
lawful permanent residents (LPRs) that their
residency status is not truly permanent. In
fact, a whole host of possibilities might result
in a lawful permanent resident losing resident
status, or face the possibility of removability
and inadmissibility.
I continue to be astonished by the large
contingent of Brits who are eligible for US
citizenship, but do not to secure their rights by
becoming Naturalized citizens. In my eight-
plus years of practicing immigration law, I
have heard an assortment of reasons from
costs concerns, personal sentiment, admit-
ted laziness, varied forms of self-perceived
protest (political or otherwise), the existence
of secret off-shore accounts and a hundred
others. While LPRs tend to be knowledgeable
of many of the most commonly referenced
benefits of citizenship, including the right to

after a trip abroad. Even seemingly low-level
criminal convictions can result in uniquely
unfair consequences for a non-citizen, includ-
ing lawful permanent residents.
To complicate matters, the interpretation

like seemingly similar crimes. Some criminal
convictions may not place an LPR at risk of
losing their status, but may bar them from
filing for citizenship in the future. Whereas
other criminal convictions do not result in a
problem until an LPR leaves and attempts to

becomes a problem where a soon-to-be

In Britain, an increasing number of
websites are pushing the boundaries of
online medicine, with at least a dozen sites
offering consultations and medication most
countries only allow during in-person visits
– or remote ones with the help of a webcam
or telephone call.
The sites are completely legal, and fall
under the jurisdiction of a regulator called
the Care Quality commission. Not surpris-
ingly, the most in-demand drugs are for
erectile dysfunction, sexually transmitted
diseases and hair loss.
The websites don’t handle serious medi-
cal problems or emergencies and don’t deal
in narcotics, painkillers or other drugs

“The British websites are definitely an
exception, but they are the start of a trend we
will soon see everywhere,” said Dr. Steinar
Pedersen, a founder and special adviser at
the Norwegian Centre for Telemedicine.

But that’s not the case in Britain, where
rules are more lax.
The websites typically charge for a doc-
tor’s consultation fee from about £8 to more
than £20 that is not covered by the national
health system. Some even ship a very small
percentage of their drugs abroad; in Europe,
it is legal for medication to cross borders as
long as it is for personal use.
The commission monitors medical web-
sites primarily to ensure the doctors running
them are licensed.

calls the spread of Islam in Britain fought
with riot police in England last month. The
mob threw bottles, rocks and a smoke bomb
at authorities.
The demonstration by the English De-
fense League occurred in Bradford, which
has one of the country’s largest Pakistani
and Muslim communities in the UK.
The clashes began as the police kept
about 700 English Defense League pro-
testers apart from a leftist group that had
called a counter-demonstration nearby. One
English Defense League protester was taken
away with a leg injury and five people were
arrested, police said.
Bradford saw some of the UK’s worst
riots in 2001, when racial tension between
whites and South Asian immigrants resulted
in looting, arson, and attacks on immigrant-
owned businesses. More than 180 people
were charged with rioting in that incident.
The English Defense League, which
insists it is a peaceful organization, opposes
what it calls the spread of Islam, Sharia law
and Islamic extremism in England.
Its opponents say the group is racist and
stages violent protests.

KEEPING UP WITH BRITAIN’S FAVOURITE SOAP OPERAS
OK EASTIES, so what’s been happening
with our crazy, mixed up friends in Albert
Square?...
When last we saw Jack, he was getting
shot in the head by a stray bullet meant for
Billie Jackson: He’s in hospital and it’s touch
and go for a while (must have been contract
time). When he wakes, he’s paralyzed on his
left side. This brings him back together with
Ronnie. But he’s depressed, and isn’t making
any rehab progress, so Ronnie tries to get
him in a private clinic but doesn’t have the
money. Roxy wants to offer help, but long
lost brother Danny (whose strings are being
pulled by Mum Glenda) keeps trying to keep
Ronnie and Roxy apart because he wants all
Roxy’s money for himself, so keeps telling her
Ronnie is proud and will be upset at the offer.
Meanwhile, against Carol’s wishes, guilty Billie
joins the Army.
Amira and Sayed get a flat of their own
and get Christian to help decorate. But Sayed
is still conflicted and dreads the move. After
spending another night with Christian, (when
Masood walks in and then immediately out on
them – leaving them wondering who it was and
what they saw – but Masood never lets on it
was him), Sayed finally decides to tell Amira
the truth, and leave her for Christian. But then
Amira finds out she’s pregnant and he feels
stuck. And Christian, angry that Sayed has
broken yet another promise, lashes out and
tears off the wallpaper covering grafitti that
Lucy had spray painted there, saying, “Sayed
Loves Christian”. When Amira and Sayed
walk in, the secret is out. In the mayhem that
follows, Amira’s dad takes her away from
the Square but sends back goons to beat up
Christian, Sayed disappears after his parents
toss him out. Surprisingly, Masood who wants
to forgive but it’s Zainib who doesn’t. But
when Jane confronts them and Masood finds
out that Zainib knew before the wedding, he
throws her out of the house.
Across the Square, after Lucy tells ZsaZsa
that Leon made her pregnant (only to get her
to break up with him in an attempt to help bruv
Peter, who fancies her) Leon tells everyone
(including clueless Peter) the real story; that
she aborted the baby. Now Peter is angry
and Ian is afraid that Jane will find out. So
he convinces her that she needs a vacation.
Alone. But before she goes, Masood tries to
get her to run away with him.

dig down, they are hit with the smell and then
a body part. The police are called, and the body
is identified as Owen. The Old Bill question

her. And then there is her everlovin’ preacher
hubby, who also tries to get out from under
any suspicion by slyly pointing at her. When
Denise is taken in under suspicion of murder,
Lucas subtly tries to make everyone think it
was her by saying she had her reasons. But
after she’s released, Lucas takes her on a drive
and she disappears, but not before Lucas tells
her that she needs to understand that he is the
Messiah. Seriously. Days later, her abandoned
car is found, and her cell phone and a body
are found in a canal, leading people to believe
she killed herself. But is it her? . . . Hmmm . . .
Anyone who knows their EE history knows that
having your body found in the canal doesn’t
necessarily mean you’re dead.

Repossessions Down
THE number of house repossessions in the
UK fell in the second quarter of 2010.
The Council for Mortgage Lenders
(CML) announced a drop of 400 to 9,400,
while the number of mortgages behind

there were 178,200 loans with arrears of
2.5 percent or more of the mortgage bal-
ance, five percent lower than at the end of
March and 17 percent lower than a year
earlier. The buy-to-let market also eased
in the period, with the number of these

THE NEW pants factory, Nick’s Nicks, is up
and running in a makeshift sweatshop under
the viaduct. But when Carla Connor finds out
what’s happened to her knicker business she
does what any good businesswoman would
do faced with a patronising partner who tried
to rip her off. She undercuts Nick’s bottom
line in knickers with his buyer and sets out to
rip him off in the pants department.
As Roy and Hayley’s wedding plans
trundle on, mad Mary takes Hayley on a
very scheduled day out to look at wedding
venues. Mary’s arranged the day’s itinerary,
with maps and Dolly Parton on CD as Mary’s
motorhome heads out to a country hall. Hay-
ley’s too polite to say much to Mary but it’s
clear she’s uncomfortable being involved in
Mary’s manic world. That is, until she spots
a steam train running alongside the wedding
hall and knows Roy would love it. I think
he’d be chuffed and reckon Hayley should
choo-choo-choose it now.
That old charmer Lewis has moved in
with Audrey but is giving Deirdre the glad
eye which, if you’re watching while you have
your tea, can fair turn your stomach. He’s still
romancing Audrey because he knows she’s
loaded and their talk turns to running a little
hotel in the Greek Islands but Audrey hasn’t
noticed that Lewis isn’t all that he seems. Not
only is he snogging Deirdre’s face off behind
Audrey’s back, he’s got his thieving fingers in
Deirdre’s till in the betting shop too.
There’s trouble for John Stape when Colin
Fishwick returns to Manchester from Canada.
John’s been using Colin’s identity to get him-
self a teaching job after he was barred from
the profession for kidnapping a pupil. So it’s
something of a problem for John when Colin
returns. But it’s a problem that manages to
sort itself out when Colin collapses and dies
at John’s feet after a heated argument in
John’s front room. John and fruity Charlotte
wrap Colin’s dead body in a rug and under
cover of darkness, manage to put it in a hole
that’s appeared in the floor at Underworld.
How fortunate that was for them, eh? Next
day, the hole’s been covered in by the build-

Liberal Democrats Slump In New Poll
A NEW opinion poll shows support for Britain’s governing Liberal Democrats
has fallen to its lowest level since the country’s national election in May.
The Liberal Democrats joined a Conservative-led coalition to oust the pre-
vious Labour Party administration following an inconclusive election result.
During the campaign the party polled as high as 32 percent, but a poor
election result saw the party lose seats.
A ComRes survey for The Independent newspaper put support for the
Liberal Democrats at 16 percent, the Conservatives at 39 percent and Labour
at 33 percent.
A total of 1,004 adults were questioned by telephone August. 6-8. No margin
of error was given, but samples of a similar size are usually put at plus or
minus three percent.

What Are You Sending Home This Christmas?
A CHRISTMAS present from the States is
something special. A little of the anticipated
pleasure may be diminished by the sender
having to declare the contents of the parcel
and its monetary value in US dollars but that’s
a minor quibble.
There is ample compensation in the unfa-
miliarity of the wrapping and the strangeness
of the contents. Disappointments are rare.
That said, most presents fade from the
memory long before New Year but not the
one we got last December.
It was packed in a box bearing a veritable
laundrette-full of warning notices: Handle with
Care, Glass This Side Up, Fragile, Thank You
for Taking Care with this Parcel.
You get the idea.
It also came with a price tag. Literally.
Parcel Force Worldwide, a distant relative I
assume of the Royal Mail, contacted me with
a demand for £20 before they would deliver
it. VAT accounted for twelve pounds of that
with eight for Parcel Force’s Clearance Fee
added for good measure.
ASSURED
Naturally, we paid the impost and took
possession of the fragile parcel, just in time
for Christmas. Since I was twenty pounds
down on the deal and the customs label as-
sured me that this was a “Glass Work of Art”
worth quite a bit more, it was singled out to
be the climax of the gift-fest that customarily
follows our assault on the goose.
Noting the warnings still plastered all over
the box regarding the fragility of the Work
of Art, we unpacked it with soft hands and
beating hearts.
What emerged
was a beautifully
sculpted skink by
Scott Bisson of Ore-
gon, which had been
tenderly encased in
the most careful of
wrappings. It was
exquisite but…it was
broken.
I photographed
the poor creature,
and emailed its picture to the sender. Time
passed. Three months altogether. From the
suggestions that flew back and forth across
the Atlantic crystallised the idea that I should
get it repaired and send the bill to the shop
whence the skink was sent.
SPECIAL
I tracked down a glass repair firm in London,
reassuringly styled London Glassblowers. By
mid-April I felt we were getting somewhere as
Jenny (of LG) was taking a personal interest in
the skink. All I had to do was send it to her and
she would use special glue to affix the back
two inches of the skink to the six inches at the
business end of the reptile.
A further two months drifted away whilst
Jenny got Bruce involved, oh, and Ant(h)ony
(“He only comes in twice a week and I’m not
sure when…”) and finally the good news
arrived that the skink had been repaired. An-
other twenty pounds departed from my bank
account to pay for repair and postage.
Unaccountably, two more months went
down the plughole as I contacted various
glass blowers at LG, all of whom were dif-
ferent but each of them assured me that they
would pass on the message and I would be
got back to the same day.
Finally I caught up with Jenny again. Ah,
she said, bit of a problem. We got it mended
but as we put it back into the box we heard a
crack. There is nothing for it but to heat the
end and turn the tail into a stump. (As I write
in mid-August, I am still awaiting this promised
solution.)
In July, I decided the time had come for me
to take direct action. So I rang up the source
of the skink – a shop in California.
Adamm, the owner, could not have been
nicer. He would send me another skink and
recompense me for the forty pounds the
Christmas present had now cost me.
I selected a new skink from his website: a
purple creature, this time with fearsome legs
and a curled tail. His forty pounds compensa-
tion landed in my PayPal account within a
matter of hours and I sat back to await the
arrival of our Christmas present.
It came late in July. This time because
VAT had gone up along with Parcel Force’s
standard rates, it cost £34 to have it delivered.
I rang the UK Border Agency to complain
about having to pay through the nose to get
a broken present. They assured me that I was
entitled to a refund on the first skink. All I had
to do was send the packaging. Oddly I had
omitted to save it from last December!
COMPENSATE
Anyway, the great thing was that my
new skink would more than compensate
for all the disappointment and expenditure.

Even today I remember the excitement and
jubilation of sitting in the cockpit of a Spitfire
and gazing around in awe, dreaming of flying
one, but of course they were obsolete by the
time I was old enough to enlist in the RAF.

Karen’s delight). I didn’t need to be asked
twice when Colin Bedding phoned me asking

as a youngster getting my copy of the Eagle
magazine and seeing the exploded view of
a Spitfire in the center pages and wanting
to build one.
Only 957 MK XIVs were built with the
V12 Griffon 65 engine entering service in
1944 and was most successful of all the
variants at destroying the V1 Flying Bombs,
accounting for 300 kills. In October 1944 it
had the distinction of being the first to destroy
a jet-powered Messerschmitt Me 262. The
Supermarine Spitfire somewhat resembles
the North American P-51 Mustang in the
sleek design and size, however the five-
blade propeller is one of the most obvious

Ex-Soldier Jailed For Stealing Rare Falcon Eggs
A FORMER special forces soldier was
jailed last month for attempting to sneak out
of Britain with a stash of 14 rare peregrine
falcon eggs hidden in socks strapped to
his body.
Jeffrey Lendrum, 48, was trying to get
to Dubai, where falconry is a national sport
and such eggs can fetch £5,000 each on
the black market. He was caught when a
cleaner spotted him behaving suspiciously
in a business class lounge at Birmingham
International Airport on May 3.
Lendrum originally told police he was
carrying store-bought chicken eggs, which
he said he used to treat a bad back, but
he pleaded guilty last month at Warwick
Crown Court.
Prized in falconry for their phenomenal
speed – they are thought to reach up to 200
miles per hour when they dive – the birds
are a protected species under British law.

rum’s crime hurt not only the local area “but
in some measure to the planet and its future”
and sentenced him to 30 months in jail.
Lendrum, an Irish citizen, has previous
convictions for stealing rare eggs in Canada

Guy Shorrock, with The Royal Society
for the Protection of Birds, said he believed
Lendrum had been stealing eggs for years.
“It’s clearly very lucrative,” he said. “He
has a very good buyer in the Middle East
for these birds and he probably receives
tens of thousands of pounds (dollars) for
his trouble.”
Book Dealer Jailed Over
Stolen Shakespeare Tome
AN UNEMPLOYED book dealer has
been sentenced to eight years in prison for
possessing a stolen first edition of Shake-
speare’s plays, described by the judge as a
“quintessentially English treasure.”
Raymond Scott was cleared last month
of stealing the rare First Folio but found
guilty of handling stolen goods and remov-
ing stolen property from Britain.
Scott was arrested after he took the 1623
volume to the Folger Shakespeare Library
in Washington in the US and asked to
have it authenticated. It disappeared from
Durham University in 1998.
Scott denied the charges and claimed he

THROUGH the years I have been so
touched by responses from you luverly
UJ readers, and have made some very
special friendships. About a year ago I
started an email correspondence with a
reader Wendy, who lives here in Florida,
and after finding out we shared so many
amazing shared coincidences were able to
plan a visit, when I drove over to her lovely
home just north of Orlando. I don’t think
we stopped chatting from the minute we
actually met (and over our several G&T’s
!), until I left. I do want to share though at
all the coincidences that we have: First
we are both Aries, birthdays only a few
days apart, We share the same second
name Frances (although mine is spelled
with an i as my Dad spelt it wrong on
the birth certificate!). We both had lived
in Egypt, and have family strong ties to
South Africa, Both our husbands names
are John, Both from Hertfordshire, Wendy
from Letchworth and me from Hitchin,
however she and my brother were born in
the same nursing home, and her parents
owned a butchers shop where my Mum
used to go! But wait there’s more!! My
best oldest friend (since we were 12) has
a sister, who just happened to also be
Wendy’s friend. On top of all this, when
Wendy was 20, she knew my middle
brother (who now lives in South Africa!)
Amazing innit?! Any road, we certainly plan
to keep in touch. During my lovely visit with
her, I was taken to her daughter Jackie’s
and son-in-laws pub, and can honestly
say it was among the best fish and chip
supper I have had since a fabulous feast
in Sussex a few years back. The pub, St
Andrews Tavern, is in Altamonte Springs,
which is just outside Orlando, worth the
visit, a real pub atmosphere, authentic

My recipe this month, is based on a
Delia Smith salad, from her Summer Col-
lection book. I tried it out in true fashion on
friends during a dinner evening recently,
and have added to my repertoire, it is good
served as a starter, and lovely because
it can be made ahead. It would be good
served with a nice crusty bread, which I
had planned, but because we were having
such a good evening and generous libation,
forgot all about serving with it until a few
days after the dinner, when I found the
bread in the oven!
Anyway, hope you enjoy my version
Roasted Tomatoes
12 large ripe tomatoes
Salt and pepper
12 large fresh basil leaves
2 large cloves garlic, finely chopped
2 Tbsp, extra virgin olive oil
Lettuce
Dressing:
2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil
2 Tbsp balsamic vinegar
Topping:
Chopped basil
24 kalamata (greek) olives
Place tomatoes in large bowl, and pour
boiling water over, let sit for 1-2 minutes,
then drain, and remove the skins. Cut in half
and place in a roasting pan, cut side up.
Season with salt and pepper. Sprinkle the
chopped garlic evenly over the tomatoes,
and sprinkle olive oil on each tomato half,
add half a basil leaf.
Place in 400F oven and roast for
one hour, the edges should be lightly
blackened. Remove from oven and cool.
Best served at room temperature Serve
the cooled tomatoes on individual plates,
on large Bib lettuce leaves. Whisk the oil
and balsamic vinegar together and drizzle
over the tomatoes, Top with an olive.

Boy And Going Solo

DAHL is like the orange-filled Club biscuit
your granny used to give you – a perfect
treat. I discov-
ered some of
his works, such
as The Witches,
James and the
Giant Peach and
Charlie and the
Chocolate Fac-
tory as a child,
but it wasn’t
until I became an adult and read his stories
out loud to my own kids that I recognized
the brilliance that is Roald Dahl. His genius
lies in the simplicity of his stories and the
characters he creates. There is always a
dreadful, terrifying villain and a little child.
And which child, I ask you, would not want
to read that kind of a story? Alright maybe
a few might be traumatized, but even they
need to revisit Dahl at a later date. I’ll pay for
therapy, I promise!
Wanting to know more about Dahl,
I read his auto-
biographies, the
first titled, Boy,
the second, Going
Solo. I must con-
fess that I am not
a huge fan of au-
tobiographies but
once again Dahl,
the master of
fireside storytell-
ing, sizzled. Boy
is a potpourri of
some of Roald’s
childhood memories assembled between
the ages of nothing to twenty. These are
his memories but they also felt very familiar
to me. This is where Dahl’s magic lies. He
draws you in with joy. He takes a potentially
life-affecting scenario and brings humor to it.
Humor after all is an ally to us, a protection.
Why not take the edge off something sad or
scary with humor? Wouldn’t that just make
it less sad and scary? This is why, I believe,
children connect with him.
Dahl was a boy raised in Britain by Nor-
wegian immigrants. A child who, like me,
seriously invested himself in the world of
sweeties, be that gobstoppers, lemon drops,
sherbet suckers or licorice bootlace. He

NINE YEARS is the longest that I have owned
any one particular motor car. That car was
a Jaguar XJS Cabriolet which I bought new
and I loved that car from my first day I
drove it up until the last. It was a sad day
when I eventually sold her, as I had become
somewhat attached to that beauty, but it
was time for a change, so my nine-year-old
baby had to go.
I have sold several cars in my time, which
in hindsight I should have mothballed and
kept as a few of them would be worth a
small fortune now, but I’m sure the same is
true for lots of car owners. Well my nine-year
ownership of a car is pretty short compared
to one mans ownership longevity – a world
record – as it stands at 77 years. I was not
aware that records were ever kept on one
car ownership facts. In actual fact no such
information exists that I know of but this par-
ticular instance is quite amazing. Sadly, this
incredible ownership relationship only came
to an end by the passing of owner Allen Swift
in 2005, at the ripe old age of 102.
The brand new car which Allen received
as a graduation gift from his father in 1928
was a Rolls Royce Piccadilly Phantom 1
Roadster. Prior to his death arrangements
had been made by Swift, that upon his
passing, the vehicle should be donated to
the Springfield, Pennsylvania, museum. The
specimen is now on display in a building he
helped finance.
In 1919 demand was so high for the
Rolls Royce Silver Ghost model that another
manufacturing facility was needed, and as a
large percentage of customers were in the
United States it was decided that the new
facility would be in the US. So, Rolls Royce
of America Inc was born on December 12,
1919. LJ Belnap of Montreal, the president
of this newly formed branch, announced
the purchase of the former plant of the Wire
Wheel Company plant in Springfield, Mas-
sachusetts, and this became the location for
this American Rolls Royce facility.
The plant comprised of seven buildings
and covered seven acres. Rolls-Royce
of America optimistically announced that
they were planning on hiring 1,000 hands
within the following year. It had long been
the policy of Rolls-Royce Ltd’s advertising
to concentrate on the chassis alone and
leave the advertising of the coachwork to the
independent coachbuilders. Rolls-Royce’s
authorized sales agents would typically
work with a specific coachbuilder, or group
of builders, who could supply them with
completed bodies depending on the require-
ments of the customer. Unfortunately that
tradition wouldn’t work in the United States,
as by 1920 most American luxury car buy-
ers had become accustomed to purchasing
a complete vehicle. In order to effectively
compete with the competition the company
introduced a series of semi-custom bodies
that would be available under the Rolls-Royce
Custom Coachwork program.
Fortune saw that the Springfield works
were located in the virtual center of the coun-
try’s custom coach building industry, and by
the time the first finished chassis were com-
pleted in February 1921, arrangements had
been made with a handful of them to supply

the plant with bodies “in-the-white”. In-the-
white refers to bodies delivered to a chassis
manufacturer minus trim, paint, varnish and
hardware. Early bodies were supplied by the
New Haven Carriage Co in Connecticut but
after that no less than 10 different coachbuild-
ers supplied the coachwork to Rolls Royce
throughout the Massachusetts factory his-
tory. Competition was fierce throughout the
coachbuilding business to supply bodies to
Rolls Royce, as these companies relied not
only on Rolls Royce for their existence but
other US car builders as well.
What better way to advertise one’s talents
than to boast custom coach works for what
most everyone knew was the finest motor
car in the world. In 1926 one of these coach-
builders was eventually bought out by Rolls
Royce of America for $2m, $200,000 which
was paid in cash was paid to the Brewster
& Co family and the remainder was issued
to Brewster in the form of a bond with guar-
anteed interest. In return, William Brewster,
was given a seat on the Rolls-Royce board
and was appointed a vice-president of the
Springfield manufacturer. Because of this
the Brewster company now manufactured the
majority of the custom coach bodies for RR,
a total of 1,020, in fact, out of 2,944 US made
cars. It was the Brewster Co that made the
Piccadilly body for Allen Swift’s car.
A total of 99 Piccadilly models were built,
79 of them mounted on the Silver Ghost chas-
sis and 20 on the later Phantom 1 chassis,
like, Swifts. Of the 2,548 US made RR bodies,
in which some were second and third bod-

British finisher. The Welsh player produced a
hole in one at the 12th during the third round,
but still finished rather distant with a two over

Rory McIIroy challenged strongly for the
92nd USPGA Championship at Sheyboyan,
Wisconsin, August 12-15, where a ten under
par 278, gave him runner up status. Bubba
Watson and Martin Klaymer went into a
three hole play-off after an 11 under 277 tie.
The 25-year-old German player claimed his
first Major. Tiger Woods finished well out
of contention with a two-under 286. Dustin
Johnson was leading the field when he was
controversially penalized two strokes unaware
he was in a bunker area, after grounding his

The European Swimming Championships
in Budapest, August 4-15, saw Hannah Miley
score gold in the 400m individual medley,
while Lizzie Simmonds and Gemma Spofforth
took gold and silver in the 200m backstroke.
Spofforth later took a gold in the 100m back-
stroke. There was gold for Fran Halsall in the
100m freestyle and the 100m butterfly,while
Olympic champion Rebecca Adlington
won the 400m freestyle. Fran Halsall and
Gemma Spofforth gained another gold medal
when Britain’s 4x100m relay squad won. 12
silvers and bronzes were scattered amongst
the British team who contemplate the world

Alistair Brownlee will not be the World
Triathlon champion this year as injuries have
seen him absent from two of the seven series
in the World championships. Stuart Hayes,
31, distinguished himself at the Kitzbuhul
Triathlon beating 65 starters in his first big
Triathlon victory. Brownlee was down the
field searching for fitness. The final Triathlon

tentatively took the field at Wembley, against
Hungary, where they received a rather formal
welcome, 40 days after a disappointing World
Cup in South Africa. England won 2-1, and
scored all the goals. Jagielka put one in his
own net in the 63rd minute, followed by a brace
by Steven Gerrard. Frank Lampard must
have wished the new goal-line technology
was in place, after another disputed over-the-
line ball appeared to rob him of a goal. Coach
Fabio Capello finally admitted that David
Beckham was not amongst his future plans for
the team, but thought a farewell appearance for
the 115 capped international was a possibility.
Beckham begged to differ.
At Llanelli, Wales strode to their biggest
victory in a long time with a 5-1 win over Lux-
embourg. David Cotterill, Joe Ledley, Andy
King, Ashley Williams and Craig Bellamy
were the marksmen. Luxembourg was down
to ten men after 77 minutes when Mutsch
was sent off. At Podgorica, Montenegro beat
Northern Ireland 2-0, and Scotland fell 3-0
in Stockholm to Sweden. The Republic of
Ireland opened their new Aviva Stadium in
Dublin, with a visit from Argentina, minus
former coach Diego Maradonna. Angel Di
Maria scored a controversial goal in the
20th minute as the Irish players waited for an

with the 1-0 result, while Spurs striker Robbie
Keane earned his 100th Irish cap. A 77,000
plus crowd turned out at East Rutherford, NJ,
where visitors Brazil, with goals by Neymar
and Pato, beat the US, 2-0.
UNITED TAME CHELSEA
The FA Community Shield at Wembley,
August 8, the precursor to the start of the
new English soccer season drew a crowd of
84,000 plus to watch a re-match of last year’s
final, Manchester United versus Chelsea.
Chelsea won last year, but this time it was
United who claimed a 3-1 victory and their
fourteenth charity shield success in a competi-
tion that was first played in 1908. Valencia put
the reds ahead four minutes before the break,
Javiar Hernandez got one in the 76th minute,
while Salomon Kalou replied for Chelsea
seven minutes later. Dimitiar Berbetov added
United’s third in the closing minute.
CARLING CUP
The first round of the Carling Cup got under-
way August 10, minus the EPL clubs. Newly
promoted Oxford Utd provided the goal-feast
with a 6-1 home victory over Bristol Rovers.

CELTIC CRASH OUT OF THE
CHAMPIONS LEAGUE
The last week of July and the first week of
August, saw a number of European qualifying
rounds on the schedule. Celtic’s European
dreams took a set-back against Sporting
Braga, where in the Portuguese leg, they
went behind to a 26th minute penalty, then
conceded two more in the second half for a
3-0 loss. At Parkhead, the visitors stunned a
52,000 crowd by taking the lead in the 20th
minute. Gary Hooper and Efrain Juarez found
the net for the hoops in the second half, but a
2-1 win was not enough to keep them in the
Champions League.
Welsh champions TNS, took on Anderlecht
at Oswestry, where the Belgium visitors were
two up after eighteen minutes and went on to
win 3-1. In the second leg, the New Saints
went down 0-3. Both Celtic and the Welsh
champions continue their European quest in
the Europa League.
LIVERPOOL & MOTHERWELL
PROGRESS
The third qualifying round of the Europa
League saw Liverpool in Macedonia in action,
where a double by David Ngog saw Robot-
nicki beaten 2-0. At Anfield, Joe Cole made
his debut, while goals by Ngog and a Steven
Gerrard penalty earned a 2-0 win and entry
into the next round.
Motherwell were robbed of victory in
Norway, where Aalesunds FK scored from
a penalty in injury time for a 1-1 tie. Jamie
Murphy had the Scots ahead three minutes
after the break. At Fir Park, Jamie Murphy and
John Sutton had the SPL side up 2-0 after just
13 minutes, while Jonathan Paige hit a third
in the closing minute for a 3-0 win.
Hibernian suffered disaster in Slovenia
where NK Maribor came out 3-0 winners. In
Edinburgh, the visitors went ahead in the 19th
minute and Hibs fought back. Two goals by
Edwin de Graaf were not enough however,
as Maribor grabbed a 3-2 win, and the Scots’
European adventure is over.
Bangor City were holding their own in
Portugal against Maritimo, just two goals
behind, when Jamie Brewerton was sent off
just after the break.
The floodgates then opened on the Welsh
goal and it resulted in an 8-2 goal-feast for
the hosts. In Wrexham, Alan Bull scored after
ten minutes, but the Portuguese got two in the

EURO PRE-GROUP QUALIFIERS

A member of the greatest generation, he served in
the Grenadier Guards during the war and exhibited
the no nonsense, no complaints, let’s get on with it,
stiff upper lip resolution that allowed the UK to stand
alone against Nazi Germany. He was part of D-day and
landed with the British at Sword beach. His role in the
war ended as part of the relief column to rescue the
British at Arnheim late in the war. He was in the lead
tank of the relief column that was hit directly and all on
board except him were killed. He never talked of he war
and never glorified in it. He was always a modest and
soft-spoken, working-class man. At 6ft slim and ath-
letic, he was remarkably ahead of his time. He enjoyed
jogging and yoga long long before it was mainstream,
and it was a great juxtaposition to his love of a good
pipe and fine dram of Scotch. He was amazingly well
read and had a great love and appreciation for Opera.
Uncommon for a working class back ground. He will

Boys were 3-0 up after 28 minutes against
Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League
qualifier. Sebastian Bassong forged a reply
three minute before the break and Roman
Pavlyuchenko found the net eight minutes
from time. At White Hart Lane in the second
leg, Peter Crouch hammered in a hat-trick with
Jermain Defoe getting a single giving Spurs a
4-0 victory and entry in to the Group stages.
The first leg, Europa League pre-qualifiers
saw Celtic bounce Dutch side Utrecht at
Parkhead 2-0. Coach Neil Lennon was well
pleased with goals by Mexican striker Efrain
Juarez (19th) and Georgios Samaras fifteen
minutes later. But in the second leg, van
Wolfswinkel tore the Celtic defense apart
with a hat-trick, and the final 0-4 reversal had
Hoops fan in deep distress as European soccer
ended at Parkhead for another year.
A Ryan Babel goal smack on halftime gave
Liverpool a 1-0 result at Anfield, over Turkish
visitors Trabzonspour. New signing Joe Cole
missed a penalty.
In the return fixture the Turkish side drew
level 1-1 on aggregate when Teofilo Gutier-
rez slotted in from a Gustavo Colman shot.
Liverpool got a crucial away goal when Giray
Kacar put a Glen Johnson cross into his own
net, and Dirk Kuyt completed the victory.
Mario Balotelli, Manchester City’s recent
£25m signing came off the bench in Romania,
and hit the Timisoara netting in the 72nd min-
ute, giving the sky blues a 1-0 victory. In the
away leg. The return leg saw Shaun Wright-
Phillips double City’s advantage and Boyata
made it 2-0 on the night to seal the win.
Barry Bannan put Aston Villa in front
in Austria against Rapid Vienna in the 11th
minute, but Muhiu hit the equalizer in the 32nd

ended 1-1. At Villa Park, Gabriel Agbonlahor

But three goals in a four minute period (77th,

At Tannadice, Dundee Utd fell to an early
goal from AEK Athens, and the Greeks came
away with a 1-0 win. In Athens, the Greek
FA forced AEK to play in a rivals stadium
where their own fans were not allowed due to
disciplinary action against the club. Diop put
the Greeks ahead in the 23rd minute, while Jon
Daly found the net twelve minutes from time.
A 1-1 tie was not enough to see the Scots
through however.
Motherwell traveled to Denmark, and
through a late goal in the dying seconds by
Tom Hateley they did improve the aggregate,
Odense had already found the Scottish
net in the 31st and 78th minutes for a 2-1
advantage.
The home advantage did not prove suc-
cessful, even though the Danes finished the
game with nine men and Jamie Murphy
missed a penalty. A 23rd minute netting by
Utaka, was enough to put Odense through.
Welsh Champions TNS were in Bulgaria
and kept CSKA Sofia, at bay until the final
ten minutes, when the New Saints conceded
three goals.
At Wrexham, Matty Williams scored a
goal and was later sent off. Steve Evans got
another in the 62nd minute. CSKA Sofia netted
in the 11th and 80th minutes to earn a 2-2
result in a resounding and attractive game
of soccer.
LATE SPORT
The last weekend of August, saw England
win the fourth and final Test match against
Pakistan, by an innings and 223 runs at Lords
to win the series 3-1. England 446 (Jonathan
