TOPIC # 4:

ARTICLES OF FAITH
INTRODUCTION TO ARTICLES OF FAITH
Being a Muslim has always been misunderstood and mislabeled as someone
who is confined to an absolute, strict and difficult to live with set of rules. But
these are all misconceptions of those who are looking from the outside, a mere
observer who has never experienced nor understood what Islam is all about.
Islam is a way of life and it does not have a complicated theology. There are
only six basic principles that every Muslim should study, understand and
comply with.
STEP 1:
MONOTHEISM: BELIEF IN THE ONENESS OF ALLAH.
It is the first part of the Muslim's Declaration of faith, LA ILLAHA ILLALLAH
which literally means that there is no God except Allah. Islam is not some weird
"cult" believing in some strange god named "Allah." Allah is not a name; it is
just the Arabic word for "the one God." There are 99 names of Allah, but these
do not signify different persons but God's characteristics and attributes.
Muslims believed in the existence of One Supreme and Eternal God, the
Creator, Sustainer and Provider. Allah is the Lord of the worlds, who is merciful
and compassionate, and the Ruler of the Day of Judgment. Allah has no equals,
He is the all-knowing, the Beneficent, and He is God of all mankind. Allah is
Mighty and Supreme; Allah asks us to know Him, to love Him, and to follow His
law, to worship Him alone and no one else.

STEP 2:
BELIEF IN THE ANGELS OF GOD
Angels are pure and spiritual beings, also a creation of Allah just like human.
They are also obliged to worship Allah and they are Allah's chosen way of
sending His commands to mankind and report to Him its fulfillment. They will
descend in ranks on the last day as a sign of the coming of the Day of
Judgment. Belief in the angels are mandatory as a Muslim, it reinforces one's
faith in the Almighty Allah.

Among those mentioned in the Qur'an are: Gabriel, the angel who brought the
Qur'an to the Prophet Muhammad [SAWS], the two angels assigned to each
one of us to record our good and bad deeds-Kiraman & Katiban, the angels who

Articles of Faith Page 1

question the soul in the grave Munkar & Nakeer, the angel of death, the angel
who is the gate-keeper of Paradise, angels in charge of carrying out the
punishments of Hell, and angels of battle.

STEP 3:
BELIEF IN THE REVELATIONS (BOOKS) OF GOD
Muslims believe in the revelations sent by Almighty God to His Prophets and
Messengers. Muslims believed that Allah revealed the Torah to Moses, the
Psalms to David, and the Gospel to Jesus. The coming of a prophet like Moses
with a new scripture is promised by the Torah, in Deuteronomy 18:15-20. And
Jesus also promised a prophet to come after him, with the explanation of all
things in the Gospel of John 16:7-15. The Holy Qur'an is the literal word of
Allah, an article of faith brought by Angel Gabriel to Prophet Muhammad
[SAWS]. It is the last of the revelations, thus compiling all the previous
teachings. As Allah is AHAD AND SAMAD, so His revelation is one and final.
STEP 4:
PROPHECY: BELIEF IN THE PROPHETS OF GOD
The second part of the declaration of faith one makes as a Muslim says "And
Muhammad [SAWS] is a Messenger of God". But aside from the belief in
Muhammad [SAWS] as the last Messenger of God, it is also obligatory for a
Muslim to have faith in all of God's prophets. Those the Qur'an has mentioned
include Adam, Noah, Abraham, Lut, Ismael, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Aaron,
David, Solomon, Elijah, Job, Jonah, Zachariah, John (Baptist), and Jesus. All
Prophets were humans; they are all mortal beings just like us. But they were
the chosen ones during their own time and appointed by Allah to teach
mankind. They were endowed with divine revelations, for the sole purpose of
spreading God's word and religion.
STEP 5:
BELIEF IN RESURRECTION AFTER DEATH AND DAY OF
JUDGEMENT
This covers two parts; the first one is the belief in the Day of Judgment. It is
believed in Islam that this world is only temporary; we are all merely passing
through it. Our final destination is the hereafter or the after life. We are only
given this life as a chance for us to do good, to worship Allah and live our life in
accordance with the teachings of Islam. Every one of us is endowed with our
own free will, thus we have the freedom to do and choose with what to do
with our lives to attain eternal life. All of these will matter on the day that the

Articles of Faith Page 2

world will come to and end. When will it happen? No one knows, except Allah.
But there are signs of the imminence of the end explained in the Holy Quran.
On this day, the living will die, and the dead will rise. It will be the Day of
Judgment, everyone of us will be judge. The Quran says, "the Hereafter is
"better and more abiding" than this world. And the pain of Hell will last forever
for those whom God condemns to it, and the joy of Paradise will last forever for
those whom God admits to it." In line with that, belief in the Hereafter or the
after life is necessary because it is there that the reward and punishment will
come.
STEP 6: BELIEF IN PREDESTINATION OR THE SUPREMACY OF ALLAH'S
WILL
It is the belief that Allah is All Knowing, --He has measured out every thing; the
sustenance in the world, the span of our life, the amount of our goodness and
our evil, and everything that happen to us. It comes from "Al-Qada wa al-
Qadar", an Arabic phrase which means "the divine decree and the
predestination" and "al-Qadar" "which literally means "to measure out". This
can be best exemplified by two of the most frequently used phrases of
Muslims. One is "InshaAllah" which means "if God wills". It is used whenever a
statement about the future is made. The second phrase is "MashaAllah" which
means "what God has willed". This is used as a statement of acceptance of
whatever happens and as a compliment of something good. The use of these
phrases acknowledged the belief of every Muslim that all things, both evil and
good, is willed by Allah and happens according to God's will.

[The most important and fundamental teaching of Islam is the belief in the
Oneness of Allah-that is termed as Tauheed. This is explained in Kalimah, the
first article of faith: there is no god; there is no worthy of worship except Allah.
This is the first article of faith for the Muslim, who expresses it in these words:
"There in no god but Allah and Hazrat Muhammad [SAWS] is the Messenger of
Allah." Islam attaches great importance to this pillar of faith- concerning the
Unity of God and the finality of Prophet Hood. This is the foundation and the
bedrock of Islam. The expression of belief in this article of faith distinguishes a
believer from a non- believer. A true believer of Islam is always firm on his
belief that Allah is the Only Supreme authority and there is none like unto Him.
Allah, but also the unique qualities of Him.]

Allah, but also the unique qualities of Him.

In a day and age when nothing seems acceptable without proof, we find many
aspects of our religion are based on complete faith. We are required to believe
in many things with or without proof. From amongst these things, is the belief
that Allah exists and that He is the creator of this world and that He has no
partner in His being or any of his infinite qualities. We have to not only believe
this, but also proclaim it.
As we look into the lives of the pious predecessors, we find that they have been
asked as to how Allah exists. They have answered in many different ways:

1. Imam Abu Hanifah [Radi Allahu Anhu] was posed with this question in a
debate with an atheist. The time and date was set for the debate. The whole
village gathered but the Imam did not turn up on time. When he
eventually arrived, the atheist began to taunt him that he was scared and
that is why he turned up late. The Imam answered calmly: “I was on my way
but encountered a river. There was no bridge or boat to cross the river. To my
amazement, I see a tree coming out of the ground and begin to shape itself in
the form of a boat that enters the water; I was able to board it and cross the
river”. The atheist began to laugh and disgrace the Imam. The Imam said the
real joke is on you. If this is not possible then how can this whole world come
into existence and be maintained in this order without a creator.
2. Imam Malik [Radi Allahu Anhu] was asked the same question. He
replied that I see a cow, a silk worm, and a honey bee, all eat the same leaf but
they all produce different products. This proves to me that there is a creator
who has the power to do this.
3. Imam Shafi [Radi Allahu Anhu] replied to this question that the different
language that people speak and use to communicate proves to me that this
world has a creator.
4. Imam Ahmed [Radi Allahu Anhu] on being asked this question replied
that once I took three eggs of a chicken and three of a duck and placed them

with the mother hen. When they hatched, they were taken to a pond. The
ducks without hesitation jumped into the water but the chicks remained
on the bank. Who taught the duckling to jump in the water and who taught the
chicks to refrain from this? There surely has to be a creator. Besides this, if a
person truly ponders on creation, he himself will find many signs guiding him to
the belief that Allah exists and that he is One.

APPEARANCES, IDENTITY AND SENSES:

There are billions of people but each and every person has unique features,
different eyes and also unique finger prints. Allah has created many aesthetic
and functional features for us such as eyebrows. These divert sweat away from
eyes, enhances the beauty of the face and do not grow at a rate of other hair
on the body. Fingertips are used all the time, whenever we use our hands to
grip, touch, push or tap an object. They are strengthened and protected by
finger nails and Allah the most merciful replaces this protection without
inconvenience to us. Imagine trying to peel a banana where your finger tips
would be as flimsy as banana skin or with constant use, wear and tear, they
become rigid - we would loose our sense of sensitive touch not to mention
damaging the computer keyboard! However with this common function of the
tip of the digit Allah still made us unique; fingerprints are the ridge pattern of
the skin on a person's fingertips; this is constant through life and no two are
exactly the same. What kind of system allows siblings to have different
fingerprints? Even though the fingerprints of the parents do not change yet
each person has unique prints that are different to their brothers/sisters even
where they have the same biological mother and father. What king of system
design can implement this and keep everyone's finger prints unique all over the
world for all time!

BRAIN:
The brain consists amongst other things grey and white matter joined by
nerves that sends chemical electrical waves reaching speeds of 160 m/525 ft
per second. The brain is a magnificent controller encased in bone and capping
all emotional interchanges: touch/taste, sight, smell, hearing and speech. Even
though its signals can travel at high speed the position of the brain in close
proximity to these senses further ensures a smaller distance of signal travel for
the most highly used senses. In addition the grouping of the brain with the face
and senses (the whole head) reduces the vulnerable areas to one: the head of
the body. Thus by protecting it one can avert total incapacity (Other vital
organs have been protected by cage of bones – rib cage). Allah has facilitated

Articles of Faith Page 5

our survival by providing the mechanisms to enable us to live life safely and in
comfort. These features have been designed and replicated millions of times by
Allah without mutating the position of these senses.

Even our auditory senses are positioned in a prime location so that we can hear
sounds 360 degrees in any direction. Had our ears been positioned closer to
our eyes our range would have been considerably less; we would be able to
hear what was coming but we could see them coming anyway so the ears are
there to sense at different frequencies that which we can't see. Our eyes
however allow us to view almost 180 degrees and we can perceive objects in 3
dimensions, colour and we can move the components of our eyes so that we
can pan and tilt our visual range. The muscles of the eye are used about
100,000 times a day to focus on particular things near or far. The same organ is
so unique to each person that the retina of an eye can be scanned and
biometrically used for security systems – again the same function of sight,
replicated around the world but unique even to same parent siblings – The
existence of worlds we have yet to find and the ones we have found and
everything within them all are evidence and signs of Allah's supreme
intelligence and power.

REPRODUCTION:
Once a sperm has fertilized an egg, the egg's wall cannot be penetrated by
other sperm, limiting about 4 million sperm that may have started the journey
towards the egg to 1 sperm. Occasionally the fertilized egg will split in two or
another sperm will fertilize another egg resulting in twins and on very rare
instances triplets or a higher number of eggs are fertilized. However an
ordinary pregnancy, if any could be described as such, would be where the egg
is fertilized by one sperm thus allowing human population to scale in
proportion to physical human capacity. We are one the most complex of
species on the planet with physical and psychological needs and so Allah has
not overburdened Man or placed an impossible task upon us by allowing all
sperm to fertilize all eggs. In fact He has deliberately put factors in place to
govern the personal well-being of parents and children and inhibited
exponential population surges. However these factors do not inhibit serial
reproduction after puberty. For example the head of a sperm contains an
arccosine enzyme that dissolves the ovum casing of a woman's egg enabling
the sperm to penetrate it. Once a sperm has fertilized an egg, the egg's wall
Articles of Faith Page 6
cannot be penetrated by other sperm. The unsuccessful sperm die after about
three days even though they have managed to get to the egg. Fertilization has
been pre-determined up to 4Million:1. Another example is of the female ovary,
It may have millions of eggs but it will only ovulate one egg every month and
stop ovulating whilst pregnant thereby restricting the number of eggs that can
be fertilized at any one time. Breast-feeding also often inhibits pregnancy and
so these factors govern pregnancy intervals and well-being.
ANIMALS:
The common peacock has a fan-shaped tail, brightly coloured with blue, green,
and purple 'eyes' on a chestnut background which is raised during courtship
displays. It is not used as camouflage and the pattern is not seen elsewhere nor
does it change. It is a handsome bird and is aesthetic to see. We humans often
marvel at its glorious plumage and derive much enjoyment from the bird's
majestic display but rarely do we realize that Allah has designed exquisiteness
and beauty in creations to augment the environment we have inherited. He has
done this for our benefit. Astronomy: Allah created the moon like a mirror in
the sky reflecting light for the benefit of Man; it appears partially or completely
so that man can measure the day of the month. It has a gravitational pull
causing tides that prevent sea water becoming stagnant and help breakdown
and deposit particles at beaches. It is an amazing sign of Allah's greatness that
he has purposely placed the moon in a particular position as an aid to Man in
the darkness of night and as a significant factor in the ecology of the world.

SIGNALING SYSTEMS:
Things that are harmful to humans often have bad smells associated with them.
For example, Allah allows Milk to be produced and preserved in the bodies of
warm blooded animals on the hottest of days however once the milk is
extracted, even if sealed it will sour and smell bad after some time. The sour
smell is a signal from Allah that the status of the milk changed and it is no
longer fit for normal consumption. Likewise urine and stool smell to signal the
risk of contamination and disease; everyone understands this warning from
Allah but just in case the sense of smell is compromised Allah also compliments
the signals by showing you flies and insects attracted to the filth and allowing
buzzing noises from flies to emanate and be heard. To indicate severity of the
problem, insects different in type and number appear depending on the
strength and type of smell, i.e. a monitored warning level of the problem.
Colour changes in water signal possible pollution and are a sign from Allah to
Articles of Faith Page 7
be cautious. Similarly pleasant fragrances and scents lead to things which can
be beneficial. Aroma Therapist and Purveyors of teas and infusions will be more
than happy to vouch for this fact. Herbs, spices and condiments not only smell
nice but also act as active ingredients in food and drink; lemongrass, ginger,
mint and vinegar being classic examples. Again Allah has put these qualities in
objects so that we can recognise them and purposefully use them.

COOPERATION:
Cooperation between creations also occurs such as birds that clean the teeth of
crocodiles. Crocodiles do not have a way of cleaning their extended set of teeth
themselves so Allah has appointed birds to pick their teeth for food/insects and
given the intelligence to the crocodiles to allow the birds to do so. Inheritance,
Uniqueness and Independence: The origin of this cooperation and intelligence
in creation is Allah. The ability to share information such as inherited features
between generations has been created by Allah. The system of keeping each
individual unique is Allah's. The ability to exclude particular traits of a person
from his/her progeny (e.g. criminal tendencies) has also been by the mercy of
Allah, hence we are all born sinless and have free will. We cannot blame our ill
doing to our genetic makeup.

COMPLEXITY:
There is no evolution in the scenarios described above however the inputs,
outputs and processes of the above scenarios are evidence of a system
designed with intelligence. Such a system, if compared with man-made
inventions, would certainly require a lead technical designer, a single
coordinator - a master controller.

RECOMMENDATION:
The above only mentions a small percentage of the signs of Allah's existence
and further reading and contemplation on the topic is strongly encouraged to
strengthen one's faith however since man's intellect and knowledge is finite
and shataaan deploys trickery to misguide, our faith should be proclaimed with
or without proof. May Allah guide us to the straight path and accept us all –
Ameen.

2. ANGELS OF ALLAH [AOF2]
Angels (Arabic: Malayekah) in Islam are light-based creatures, created from
light by God to serve and worship him. Believing in angels is one of the six
Articles of Faith in Islam, without which there is no faith. The six articles are
belief in: God, His angels, His Books, His Messengers, the Last Day, and that
predestination, both good and evil, comes from God.

Articles of Faith Page 9

Qu'ran, Chapter 17. Al-Isra verse 95. [Isra, The Night Journey, Children of
Israel]
"Say, 'If there were settled, on earth, angels walking about in peace and quiet, we
should certainly have sent them down from the heavens an angel for a messenger.”
ATTRIBUTES OF ANGELS
Angels are intangible, sentient entities, who do not possess free will. They were
created for the sole purpose of serving God. Being made of light, they can
assume almost any form, completely real to the human eye, and traverse a
distance as fast as light or faster.
ANGEL HIERARCHY:
There is no standard hierarchical organization in Islam that parallels the division
into different "choirs" or spheres, as hypothesized and drafted by early
medieval Christian theologians. Most Islamic scholars agree that this is an
unimportant topic in Islam, especially since such a topic has never been directly
mentioned or addressed in the Qur'an. However, it is clear that there is a set
order or hierarchy that exists between Angels, defined by the assigned jobs and
various tasks to which angels are commanded by God.
ARCHANGELS
Due to varied methods of translation from Arabic and the fact that these
Angels also exist in Christian contexts and the Bible, several of their Christian
and phonetic transliteral names are listed.
1. JIBRAAIYL/JIBRIL [A.S.]? (Judeo-Christian Gabriel) Jibraaiyl [A.S.] is the
archangel responsible for revealing the Qur'an to Muhammad  , verse by
verse. Jibrayil [A.S.] ? is known as the angel who communicates with (all of) the
prophets.
2. MIKAAIYL [A.S.] (Judeo-Christian Michael) Mikaaiyl [A.S.] is often
depicted as the Archangel of mercy who is responsible for bringing rain and
thunder to Earth. He is also responsible for the rewards doled out to good
persons in this life.
3. ISRAFIL/ISRAAFIYL [A.S.]? (Judeo-Christian Raphael) According to the
Hadith, Israafiyl [A.S.]? is the Angel responsible for signaling the coming of
Qayamah (Judgment Day) by blowing a horn and sending out a Blast of
Truth. The blowing of the trumpet is described in many places in Qur'an. It is
said that the first blow will destroy everything [Qur'an 69:13], while the
second blow will bring all human beings back to life again [Qur'an 36:51].
4. IZRAEL [A.S.] (Judeo-Christian Azrael) who is responsible for parting the
soul from the body. Although he is frequently referred to as Israel [A.S.] or

Articles of Faith Page 10

Azrael [A.S.] in Arabic, he is referred to as MALAK-AL-MAUT (the angel
of death) in the Qur'an (Surah al-Sajdah 32:11). There is also no mention
of the name Israel [A.S.] in reference to MALAIK-AL-MAUT found amongst
the verified Hadith of Bukhari.

OTHER ANGELS
• Maalik [A.S.] is the chief of the angels who guard Hell.
• Ridwan [A.S.] is the angel who is responsible for Heaven (Paradise).
• Kiraamun [A.S.] and Kaatibeen [A.S.] are the angels who record the
good and bad deeds of a person.
• Munkar [A.S.] and Nakeer [A.S.] are the angels who interrogate a person
in the grave about his good and bad deeds.
• Harut [A.S.] and Marut [A.S.] are the angels who were sent as a test to
an ancient Israeli tribe. (in Babylon).

The Qur'an also mentions angels who are ruling the Hell. A verse stipulates this:

"O you who believe! Save yourselves and your families from a Fire
(Jahannam) whose fuel is Men and Stones, over which are (appointed) angels
stern and severe, who flinch not (from executing) the Commands they receive
from God, but do (precisely) what they are commanded." At-Tahrim 66:6 Also
the number of Angels of Fire mentioned as Nineteen:

"Over it(Fire) are nineteen (Angels) And We have not made the wardens of the
Fire others than angels and We have not made their number but as a trial for
those who disbelieve, that those who have been given the book) Taw’rat and
Bible may be certain and those who believe may increase in faith and those
who have been given the book and the believers may not doubt and that those
in whose hearts is a disease and the unbelievers may say: What does Allah
mean by this parable? Thus does Allah make err whom He pleases, and He
guides whom He pleases" Qur'an 74:30,31

The Qur'an also mentions that angels have qualities that may be typified by the
word wings. Another ayah (verse) stipulates this:
"Praise be to God, Who created (out of nothing) the heavens and the earth,
Who made the angel messengers with wings - two, or three, or four (pairs)
and adds to Creation as He pleases: for God has power over all things."
Fatir 35:1

Articles of Faith Page 11

The preceding sentence does not imply that all angels have two to four wings.
Most notably, archangels (namely Gabriel [A.S.] and Michael [A.S.]) are
described as having thousands of wings. Tradition also notes that certain
angels, created solely for the purpose of praising God, have 70 thousand heads,
each with 70 thousand mouths that speak 70 thousand languages solely to sing
praises for the Almighty. This type of angel, whose type is nameless,
accompanied Muhammad  up to Jannah (Heaven) when he received
commands from Allah. Instead of riding on an angel, Muhammad  rode a
creature called a Buraq whose stride spans from horizon to horizon.

VERSES IN THE QUR'AN THAT DIRECTLY NAME ANGELS

Gabriel (Jibreel) [A.S.] and Michael (Mikaa'eel) [A.S.] are mentioned early on
the Qur'an in Surah Al-Baqarah:

"Say: Whoever is an enemy to Gabriel - for he brings down the (revelation) to

your heart by God's will, a confirmation of what went before, and guidance and
glad tidings to those who believe - Whoever is an enemy to God, and His angels
and prophets, to Gabriel [A.S.] and Michael [A.S.] - Lo! God is an enemy to
those who reject Faith." (Al-Baqarah 2:97-98)

Another Angel, Malik [A.S.] is defined in the Qur'an as a being who is the
warden of Hell. Malik [A.S.] also translates into "King" from Arabic, so it is
assumed that Malik [A.S.] is "King" of Hell. However Malik [A.S.] is not an evil
angel, nor a fallen one, a notion Islam rejects, rather Malik [A.S.] is merely
doing what he is commanded to do by God.

"They [the people in Hell] will cry: ‘O Malik [A.S.] ! Would that your Lord put an
end to us!’..." (Az-Zukhruf 43:77)

Two other Angels are also mentioned directly in the Qur'an: Haaroot [A.S.] and
Maaroot [A.S.] (OR Harut [A.S.] and Marut [A.S.]).

". . . and such things as came down at Babylon to the angels Haaroot and
Maaroot . . ." (Al-Baqarah 2:102)

These can also be interpreted as to Kings (Malakyn) as well as angels, just as

the Prophets are called Rasuls (Messengers) and the Angels are also Rasuls.

Several Angels, Angel of death Izra'il [A.S.], Israfil [A.S.] and Munkar [A.S.] and
Nakeer [A.S.] are not mentioned directly in the Qur'an but are explained

Articles of Faith Page 12

further in the Hadiths of Muhammad [SAWS] . They are also mentioned in
traditional myths, however, they seldom retain complete originality from the
Hadith.
THE ANGELS OF ALLAH
Q. What are angels?
A. Angels have been created by Allah. They are spiritual beings. They obey
the commands of Allah. They are numerous in number and have been
assigned various duties by Allah. They are also sent by Allah to help His
prophets and their followers.
Q. Name some of the most important Angels of Allah?
A. There are four most important angels of Allah namely Jibraeel [A.S.],
Mikaeel [A.S.], Israfeel [A.S.] and Izraeel [A.S.]
Q. Do we worship angels?
A. No, not at all. We only worship Allah and none else whatsoever.
Q. What is the name of the angel who brought Allah's revelation to the
Holy Prophet [SAWS]?
A. Hazrat Jibraeel [A.S.].

3.THE HOLY BOOKS OF ALLAH [ AOF:3 ]

Human beings are created by Almighty Allah. HE sent down the message to the
mankind, nation by nation and tribes by tribes, time to time for their guidance.
These messages are known as Suhuf and Revealed Books and it is indicated in
Holy Qur’an in its Surah 42 verse 51; Qur’an also points out the names to whom
these scriptures were revealed. Some of them are: Hazrat Adam [A.S.], Hazrat
Nuh [A.S.], Hazrat Ibrahim [A.S.], Hazrat Ismail [A.S.], Hazrat Ishaaq [A.S.] who
received Suhuf whereas the Holy Books were revealed as:
1. Zaboor (Dhaboor) …… revealed on Hazrat Da’ud (David) [A.S.]
[s.42:51+17:55]
2. Taur’at ……. revealed on Hazrat Musa (Moses)[A.S.]
[s.42:51+23:19]
3. Injeel (Bible/Gospel)…. revealed on Hazrat Issa (J.C) [A.S.]
[s.57:17+5:46]
4. Holy Qur’an ….. revealed on Hazrat Muhammad [SAWS]
[s.2:5-7+15:8-10]

The last Message of Allah, The Holy Qur’an, confirms the earlier revelations and
warns to abide it before the end of the Universe. It contains the common
teachings as were revealed in the earlier holy revelations such as TAWHID,

Articles of Faith Page 13

PRAYERS BEFORE GOD AND RIGHT VS WRONG, & PEACE. It also discusses the
specific teachings such as Benefits of Prayers, Fasting, ZAKAT, Hajj, Earnest
Earnings, Laws on the matters of Rights of Fellow Beings starting from
individuals till global impact of peace etc.

Thus, belief in the Holy Qur’an is indeed a belief in the earlier revelations
because it not only confirms them but also its teachings serve the whole
mankind in all respects and manners and in all fields of the human life for all
ages.

THE BOOKS OF ALLAH

Q. 'What do you mean by Books of Allah'?
A. Allah sends His guidance to mankind from time to time. This guidance is
conveyed to mankind through Prophets of Allah. It contains laws for our
day to day life. These laws and rules are called the Books of Allah. We must
believe in all books of Allah.
Q. What are the well known books?
A. The well known books are the following:-

• The Holy Quran which is the last and perfect Book. It was revealed to
the Holy Prophet Muhammad [SAWS]. It took nearly 23 years to be
revealed. It came in
bits and small portions.
• The Torah was given to Prophet Musa (Moses) [A.S.].
• The Psalms or Zaboor given to Prophet Daud (David) [A.S.].
• The New Testament or Injeel given to Prophet Isa (Jesus) [A.S.].
• The Mus'haf was given to Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) [A.S.].
Q. What are the main features of the Holy Quran?
A. The Holy Quran is a book of guidance for us all. Every word of the Quran
is the word of Allah. The Quran has been preserved in its original form as
promised by Allah in the in itself (15:10).
It was preserved by the Holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad [SAWS] and his
companions (peace be on them all) by committing it memory. There have
always been hundreds of people in ages that have learnt the whole of the Holy
Quran by heart. This practice still continues. The Quran is in Arabic language.
The style and language of the Quran are excellent. The Quran has been
translated into many languages including English. It contains many
prophecies about the future of mankind and also a complete code of conduct
for us. Those who follow the Holy Quran become the most successful people in
Articles of Faith Page 14
life. We should read and ponder over the meaning of the Quran more often so
that we could achieve success in life. The Quran has 114 chapters and is also
divided into 30 equal parts.
Q. Will there be other Books after the Quran canceling some or all of its
teachings?
A. Not at all. Quran is the perfect and most complete Book. There is no
need for mankind to look forward to anything else because the Quran gives
guidance in all aspects of life. The Quran is a living Book and will remain so
for ever.

Q. What other Revealed Books exist today in their original forms?

A. None. All other books have been changed partly by their followers and
are not the original ones. Some of them have not even been preserved in their
original languages, such as the New Testament. We only have belief in the fact
that these books originally had contained the message of Allah but the present
day version of these is open to criticism.

4. THE MESSENGERS OF ALLAH [AOF: 4]

The Faith of Islam teaches that all Prophets and Messengers were humans,
created and sent by Almighty Allah. They led a normal, simple and a mortal life,
however, they were distinct from the ordinary humans because they were
chosen people of Allah.
They had a specially ordained Divine Mission, so they enjoyed special
protection from Allah. Almighty Allah Himself defines the specialty of His
Messengers as;
“These (Prophets & Messengers) were then men to whom WE gave the Book
and the authority and Prophet hood ……..”. [6:89]
To sum up the similarities and dis-similarities between ordinary men and the
Messengers of God, the following verse of Holy Qur’an would justify best;
“Before You (O’ Hazrat Muhammad [SAWS] )! also the messengers WE sent but
men, to whom WE granted inspiration. If you realize this not, ask from those
who possess the Message. Nor did WE give them bodies that ate no food, nor
were they exempt from death.” [21:7-8]
Qur’an has called 27 names of the Messengers of Allah specifically in several
Surahs such as Al-Baqarah, Aal-e-Imran, at Taubah, Al-Younus, Hud, Al-Yousuf,
Maryam and Al-Anbia.
Qur’an clearly states that Muslims must believe in each of them equally as said
in Surah Al-Nisaa verse 150-151. Allah declares that Hazrat Muhammad [SAWS]
was sent to the whole mankind to come not only for a nation or for a particular
Articles of Faith Page 15
age. Allah called him as a ‘beautiful pattern of conduct ‘ for every one in 21:33
whereas declared him as the ‘Seal of Prophethood in 33:40 of Holy Qur’an.
The entire chain of Prophets taught about:
• Tawhid
• Worship Allah alone
• Justice
• Modesty
• Manners & Ethics
• Difference between right & wrong
• Rewards and Punishment
• Abiding natural laws
So belief in the Messengers of Allah is the part of Imaan e Mufassal for all the
believers.
THE PROPHETS OF ALLAH
Q. Who is a Prophet?
A. In Arabic there are two words used for a Prophet. Rasul means 'one
who is sent' or 'messenger', and Nabi means 'one who receives and conveys
Divine Commands'. Both these words are used for a person who is chosen by
Allah for the reformation and guidance of mankind.
Q. Mention some of the qualities of a Prophet.
A. The Prophets of Allah are chosen from among human beings. They set
the best examples of moral and spiritual conduct. They lead mankind to
Allah by conveying to them the Divine revelation and also by their own
example of purity and righteousness. They are the most truthful of men.
Their hearts are full of love of Allah and His creatures. All of them
proclaim the Oneness of Allah and ask people to submit to Him completely.
Q. Who is the chief of the Prophets?
A. Muhammad [SAWS] is the chief of the Prophets. He is KHATAMUN-
NABIYYEEN i.e. the Seal of the Prophets. He brought perfect guidance for us
from Allah. He came as a blessing for mankind. He is an excellent Exemplar. He
showed mercy not only to human beings but also to animals.
Q. Name some of the other Prophets of Allah.
A. Adam [A.S.], Ibrahim (Abraham) [A.S.], Nuh (Noah) [A.S.], Musa (Moses)
[A.S.], Daud (David) [A.S.], Suleiman (Solomon) [A.S.], Isa (Jesus) [A.S.],
Ahmad [A.S.].
Q. When was the Holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad [SAWS] born and
when did he die?
A. He was born on 20th April, 570 A.D. at Makkahhh in Arabia, and died at
the age of 63 at Madinah in 632 AD. He is buried at Madinah.
Articles of Faith Page 16
Q. Tell me more about the Holy Prophet Muhammad [SAWS].
A. Muhammad [SAWS] was left an orphan, and was brought up by his
grandfather Hazrat Abdul Muttalib, and later, by his uncle Hazrat Abu Talib.
Hazrat Abdullah is his father's name and Bibi Aminah  is the name of
his mother. His mother died when he was only six years of age. Hazrat
Muhammad [SAWS] was twenty five when he married Hazrat Khadijah, who
was forty. She bore him several children. Muhammad [SAWS] used to retire for
meditation to the cave of Hira which is a few miles from Makkahhh.
At the age of forty he received revelation from Allah that he had been
appointed a prophet whose duty it was to reform mankind. He started his
divine mission but was opposed by all except a few. They even tortured him
and killed some of his followers. They laughed at him and ridiculed him when
he spoke to them about his sacred mission. Even his own relatives turned
against him. He continued his work under these circumstances until such time
as Allah ordered him and his followers to leave Makkah and migrate to
Madinah. The Makkans were so opposed to him that they would not even let
him leave the town. He along with his dear friend and follower, Abu Bakr [RA] ,
decided to leave Makkah. One night they left Makkah in the dark and took
refuge in a cave called Thaur for nearly three days. During this time the Makkah
left no stone unturned [RA] to trace him but to no purpose. After three days he
-- and Abu Bakr [RA] started on their journey to Madinah. This is called the
Hijra or the migration. He was welcomed warmly by the people of Madinah.
Soon after settling down in Median
the news started coming in that the Makkans had started raising an army to
attack Madinah and to destroy Islam and its founder. The Prophet [SAWS] and
his followers were worried when they heard this news but had full faith in Allah
about their safety. The first battle that was fought by the Prophet  and his
followers is called the Battle of Badr as it was fought near a well of that name.
The Prophet  had 313 followers as against him Makkans who were more than
1000 in number. They were well equipped whereas the Prophet  and his
followers had not much weapons and food. The non-believers were defeated at
the hands of the Muslims and were routed.

After this battle he had to fight several other battles in self defense till
eventually he entered Makkah as a conqueror in 630 A.D. and the hostilities
ceased for the time being. The Holy Prophet  died at Madina at the age of 63
and was buried there. Hazrat Muhammad [SAWS] is an excellent exemplar for
us all. Allah wanted to make him a model for us all so He made him pass
through various stages of human life. He showed kindness to his wives, mercy

Articles of Faith Page 17

to his enemies and laid down standards of equality for men to follow. He
commanded armies and was an excellent General. He was obedient to his
elders and kind to the young.
Q. Has the advent of the Holy Prophet Muhammad [SAWS] been
mentioned in other scriptures?
A. Yes. Prophet Moses [A.S.] told the Israelites that God had told him of
the advent of the Holy Prophet [SAWS] in the following words:
‘I will raise them up a prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and
will put My words in his mouth, and he shall speak unto them all that I
shall command him’. (Deuteronomy 18:18)
This was a prophecy about the Holy Prophet made in about 1451 B.C. by the
Prophet Moses [A.S.].
Q. Where can we read the events of the life of the Holy Prophet?
A. In the Holy Quran where major events of his life have been mentioned
by Allah Himself and from the Books of Hadith which consist of his sayings and
doings. There are six major Books of Hadith. These are Bukhari, Muslim,
Tirmizi, Ibn-Majah, Nasai, and Abu-Daud.

5. DAY OF JUDGEMENT [AOF: 5]

PROCESS FOR THE DAY OF JUDGEMENT

Final Destination Judgment
World
Heaven OR Hell Heaven OR Hell

Everything in this universe has a pre-determined set course ordained before

the creation of mankind. And all changes in the system of the universe occur in
due measure and proportion that maintains the balance of nature. Allah
Almighty has balanced all the elements in the universe according to a certain
Proportion as He says in Holy Qur’an in Surah al-Furqan in its verse 2;
“It is He who created all things, and ordered them in due proportions.”

Articles of Faith Page 18

All the virtuous and the evil forces play their action so that man may be tested
in the life of this world. But Allah has given the chance to men to select the way
to live in this world after giving them a proper guidance through His messenger
and Book and has set the destinations of Heaven for the righteous people and
Hell for the wrongdoers.
Holy Qur’an describes the horrors of the Day of Resurrection; the day on which
the whole balance of nature will become disordered. The trumpet blown by
Hazrat Israfeel [A.S.] will produce such an unbearable high-pitched sound that
everything would break away and the human beings would die. The Holy
Qur’an says in this regards;

“Then, when the Trumpet is blown once, and the earth and the mountains
are lifted up and crushed into pieces with a single stroke, ……..”.
[Surah al Haqqah 69:13].
So this is an admitted fact that every living thing shall die as said in Holy Qur’an,
“Every soul shall have a taste of death.” [3:185].

Belief in Life after death has always been a part n parcel of the teaching of the
Prophets who asked their followers to believe in it. Holy Qur’an has assured the
life after death in Surah al-Fussilat [41:39] that verily Allah is He who gives life
to the dead bodies as He has the power over everything.
Everybody will join the vast assembly gathered on the plain of Hashr and each
human will appear before Allah Almighty, to give an account of his deeds. This
is known as Yaum-ul-Hashr or Yaum-ul-Jaza when the complete justice would
be observed. The virtuous/righteous would be awarded with the
rewards/Heaven while the wrongdoers/evildoers would take their balance of
deed/Hell as the Holy Qur’an has stated in Surah al-Qariah that the righteous
persons/good doers will be in the life of good pleasure and satisfaction
whereas the wrong/evil doers will have a home in a bottomless Pit [101:6—11].
OUTCOMES OF THE BELIEF
• A person, who believes in the Day of Judgment, develops a sense
of responsibility and accountability of all his actions.
• He leaves the path of tyranny ad become God-fearing.
• He will not confine the rewards of his virtues to this world and he will
neither despair of virtues nor become complacent of over his misdeeds.
• He will not be a rebellious one.
• A person who believes in Life Hereafter will regard virtue as necessary
as water
and food is for a person is for this life.

Articles of Faith Page 19

• This belief safeguards mankind from lawlessness.
• This faith enables us to bear trials with patience and forbearance.
• It nurtures the spirit of sacrifice in man.
• It prevents man from descending to the level of an animal.
• This belief is a source of having piousness and righteousness.

LAST DAY (QIYAMAH)

In Islamic eschatology, Judgment day is the end of the earth and the universe
as we know it. Preceding judgment day there are the Great Signs of The Day of
Judgment. The first sign is the rise of the Sun from the west for one day
accompanied by the rise of the Earth Beast. The coming of the Mahdi [RA]
(also Mahdi and meaning "the divinely guided one"), which precedes the
Second Coming of Isa (Jesus), triggers the redemption of Islam and the defeat
of its enemies. The exact nature of the Mahdi [RA] differs between Shi'ah
Muslims and Sunni Muslims, but both agree that Jesus and the Mahdi [RA]
work together to fight evil in the world, to cement justice on Earth, and will
unite the Muslims and true Christians under true Islam--------. The Mahdi [RA]
comes from Makkah and rules from Damascus, Syria. Isa will defeat Dajjal
(literally: deceiver; the fake messiah or antichrist) and then shall live on Earth
for many years. According to some traditions Isa will marry and have a family,
and then die. In the text, Signs of Qayamah, Muhammad Ali Ibn Zubair Ali
states that after the arrival of the Mahdi [RA] , "the ground will cave in, fog or
smoke will cover the skies for forty days (ayah). A night three nights long will
follow the fog. After the night of three nights, the sun will rise in the west. The
Beast of the Earth shall emerge. The beast will talk to people and mark the
faces of people. A breeze from the south shall cause all the believers to die. The
Qur'an will be lifted from the hearts of the people."
During judgment, a person's own "book of deeds" will be given to the person,
and will be appraised of every deed and every word one spoke (Qur'an 54:52-
53). If given in the right, that Person will go to Jannah (paradise). If he gets it in
his left, he's going to Jahannam (Hell). Actions during childhood are not judged.
Even minor and trivial deeds are included in the account. When the hour is at
hand, some will deny that the Last Judgment is taking place and will be warned
that the Judgment precedes the "Day of Pining" (distress) (Qur'an 30:55-57,
19:39). If one denies a deed he or she committed, or refuses to acknowledge it,
his or her body parts will testify against them.
The Qur'an states that some sins can condemn someone to hell. These include
lying, dishonesty, and corruption, ignoring God or God's revelations, denying
the resurrection, refusing to feed the poor, indulging in opulence and
Articles of Faith Page 20
ostentation, and oppressing or economically exploiting others.[3] Throughout
judgment, however, the underlying principle is that of a complete and perfect
justice administered by God. The accounts of judgment are also replete with
the emphasis that God is merciful and forgiving, and that mercy and
forgiveness will be granted on that day insofar as it is merited. This is in
contrast to some Protestant theologies that state that salvation is by the grace
of God, and not by deeds. Islam, however, emphasizes that grace does not
conflict with perfect justice. In Islam, the Last Judgment is referred to as "the
Day of Standing" and God Almighty, will judge all.
SUMMARY OF THE DAY OF JUDGEMENT
With the tremendous scientific advancements of the twentieth century, we
have placed our trust in science and technology to solve all our problems.
Dazzled by the ability of technology to produce quick results, our faith in God
has become weak. Our actions are for worldly goals, although a stronger belief
in God and fear of accountability in the afterlife could make us better people.
We can see the consequences of lacking these in the moral decay that is
afflicting many societies all over the world.
God has sent guidance to human beings according to the conditions existing at
that moment in history. When the Pharaohs ruled, magic was a very popular
pastime. Then Moses [A.S.] came with miracles from God and defeated the
magicians of the Pharaoh's court. The people at the time of Jesus [A.S.] were
similarly deep into miracles, and we can see that the life of Jesus [A.S.] is full of
miracles. When Mohammad  came, the Arabic language and poetry was at
the height of its development. The Qur’an with its clear message was revealed
in the most eloquent poetry with a style unique and unmatched.
Many verses in the Qur’an describe the Day of Judgment. We live in a universe
that has been expanding since its creation billions of years ago. Both the birth
of the universe with the "Big Bang" and its expansion are described in the
Qur’an. Scientists do not know if the expansion will continue forever, or if one
day the universe will begin to contract. However, the Qur’anic verses suggest
that the universe will not expand forever and that the Day of Judgment will
begin with the contraction of the universe. It appears that time and gravity will
reverse when the universe begins to contract. Reversal of time will bring about
the resurrection from the grave. In this time reversed world we will come
across all the good and evil that we did in our lives. Reversal of gravity will be
the cause of the final earthquake, mentioned in the Qur’an. This will change
the earth so that it will be turned inside out and be transformed into a giant
hollow sphere with the sky towards its center. The reversed gravity focused
towards the "earth's center-sky" will have a runaway effect on space. The space
Articles of Faith Page 21
in the center-sky will be literally torn apart to produce openings or gates to the
higher dimensions that are beyond our universe. Through these openings, we
will be removed from the collapsing universe.

Everyone will be taken away to escape the unrelenting effect of time reversal
that could regress us to nothingness in our mother's wombs. In some higher
dimension or plane mankind will be brought together from all times and places
in history, to face the judgment for their deeds and hell or heaven.
From the Qur’an, it appears that the timing of the Day of Judgment will never
be known and it may come at any time. We should be aware that The Day of
Judgment is very near to every one of us as there is no perception of passage of
time after death.

The agony of death comes in truth; this is what you wished to avoid, And the
trumpet is blown; this is the threatened Day. Qur'an Chapter 50 Verse 19-20.
As we go through our daily life we should keep in mind that everything big and
small that we do is being recorded in time. If we do not take steps to protect
ourselves from evil, in addition to the threat of severe punishment, we stand
the chance of great embarrassment on the Day of Judgment. The reversal of
time will expose all our secrets.
I hope this article will serve as a source of warning as well as encouragement to
the believers. They will realize that, The Day of Judgment is a religious,
scientific and mathematical truth, which every one will have to face; and our
deeds in this world will determine our fate in the eternal life. There is no doubt
however, that the real knowledge of the Day of Judgment is with God only. The
non-Muslims hopefully, will appreciate that the religion of Islam is more than
just another belief and they will be stimulated to further investigate the world
of Islam.

6. PREDESTINATION AND THE DECREE OF ALLAH

HISTORY OF THIS DOCTRINE
Historically, Islam teaches that Allah has decreed all things, good and evil from
eternity, all that happens, whether obedience or disobedience, faith or
infidelity, sickness or health, riches or poverty, life or death: “When Hazrat
Articles of Faith Page 22
Muhammad [SAWS] died, this article was not yet included with the other five.
About a century later, Muslim theologians argued much over it. One group, the
Jabrites, plainly said that Allah decreed everything, good or bad, and that man
had no choice to do anything except what Allah had willed for him. The
Qadarite theologians did not agree. They said that evil and injustice cannot be
blamed onto Allah, but were the result of man's own choice. But this raised
another problem. If man could choose to do right or wrong, then man also
became a creator of actions, like Allah creates actions. No Muslim could agree
to this.

A third group of Muslim theologians, the Ash’arites, agreed with the Jabrites
that Allah had one will and could do as he please, either good or evil. But they
wanted to allow for the fact that each man feels that he has the power to make
his own choices. The Ash’arites concluded that, although Allah decrees for a
man to do a thing, he also gives man the choice and desire to do it. In this way,
each man becomes responsible for his own actions because he chose to do
what Allah had decreed for him to do, even though he could do nothing else.
This teaching is known by the Arabic word ‘Kasb,’ which means ‘acquiring’.
The conclusion of the Ash’arites that Allah had predetermined all things is what
most Muslim theologians believe today. This explains why the Muslim so easily
says, ‘InshaAllah,’ meaning ‘if Allah wills.’ It is the reason why the illness,
accident, death, or good fortune are said to be from Allah. Belief in
predestination gives Muslims great courage in times of terrible hardship or
when everything seems to go wrong. The Muslim believes that his sufferings
have come from Allah. On the other hand, to soften the harshness of this belief
in complete dependence on Allah and that man can do nothing to change his
fate, many Muslims believe strongly in the protection of Qur’anic charms in this
life and in the intercession of Hazrat Muhammad [SAWS] and other ‘saints’ in
the Last Day.

Educated Muslims, who are trained in modern sciences, place more emphasis
on human responsibility. They often believe that sickness or poverty, for
example, are frequently the simple result of a man's ignorance or laziness. They
prefer to believe that it is Allah's will for man to fight disease instead of simply
accepting it as one’s fate.”

Qur’an on Predestination
1. EVERYTHING HAPPENS BY THE WILL OF ALLAH

Articles of Faith Page 23

Nor can a soul die except by Allah’s leave, the term being fixed as by writing. If
any do desire a reward in this life, we shall give it to him; and if any do desire a
reward in the Hereafter, We shall give it to him. And swiftly shall we reward
those that (serve us with) gratitude. S. 3:145
2. ALLAH PREDESTINES THE FATE OF EVERY SOUL
The guiding of them is not thy duty (O Muhammad SAWS), but Allah guideth
whom He will. And whatsoever good thing ye spend, it is for yourselves, when
ye spend not save in search of Allah's Countenance; and whatsoever good thing
ye spend, it will be repaid to you in full, and ye will not be wronged. [S. 2:272 ]
“Those whom Allah wills to guide, He opens their breast to Islam; Those whom
He wills to leave straying, - he makes their breast close and constricted, as if
they had to climb up to the skies: thus does Allah lay abomination on those
who refuse to believe.” [S. 6:125]
“Whomsoever Allah guides, he is the one who follows the right way; and
whomsoever He causes to err, these are the losers. Many are the Jinns and
men we have made for Hell.” [S. 7:178-179]
3. ALLAH PREDESTINES WHETHER A PERSON WILL BELIEVE
“And if your Lord had pleased, surely all those who are in the earth would have
believed, all of them; will you then force men till they become
believers? And it is not for a soul to believe except by Allah’s permission; and
He casts uncleanness on those who will not understand.”[S. 10:99-100]
4. ALLAH PREDESTINES OUR WILLS
“Let any who will, keep it in remembrance! But none will keep it in
remembrance except as Allah wills: He is the Lord of Righteousness, and the
Lord of Forgiveness.” [S. 74:55-56]
5. MAN IS HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR WHAT ALLAH HAS WILLED
FOR HIM SINCE MAN MUST WILL TO BELIEVE
“Wherever ye are, death will find you out, even if ye are in towers built up
strong and high!” If some good befalls them, they say, “This is from Allah”; but
if evil, they say, “This is from thee” (O Prophet). Say: “All things are from Allah.”
But what hath come to these people, that they fail to understand a single
fact? Whatever good, (O man!) happens to thee, is from Allah. But whatever
evil happens to thee, is from thy (own) soul. And we have sent thee as a
messenger to (instruct) mankind. And enough is Allah for a witness. [S. 4:78-79]
“Then he (Abraham) turned aside to their Gods secretly and said: What! Do
you not eat? What is the matter with you that you do not speak? Then he
turned against them secretly, smiting them with the right hand. So they
(people) advanced towards him, hastening. Said he: What! Do you worship

what you hew out? And Allah has created you and what you make.” [S.37:91-
96]

JIHAD- STRUGGLING IN THE WAY OF

ALLAH
ORIGIN OF WORD:
Arabic root word J-H-D, which means “strive”. Other Derived words from this
root include “effort”, “labour”, and “fatigue” [for good and elimination of evil].
WHAT IS JIHAD?
The Qur’an describes JIHAD as a system of checks and balances, as a way that
Allah set up to “Check one people by means of another.” When one person or
group transgresses their limits and violates the rights of others, Muslims have
the right and duty to “Check” them and bring them back into line. There are
several verses of the Holy Qur’an that describe JIHAD in this manner. Holy
Qur’an says in 2:251;
“And did not Allah check one set of people by means of another, the earth
would indeed be full of mischief; but Allah is full of Bounty to all the worlds.”

SIGNIFICANCE:
Jihad has a great significance in the lives of Muslims. It involves noticeable
effort for righteousness. This means that the effort concentrated in the Jihad is
a step in the true and ultimate path of Islam; the effort imposed on one’s self.
Thus, this effort is only the doing of good for salvation and pardon of God.
Therefore, it should be interpreted as to struggling for doing sincere acts of
good deeds to help poor and needy, the orphans, to stand for people’s right for
freedom, be equitable, and to bear witness true testimony; on the other hand,
for restraining of doing of sins such as: to commit adultery, to steel, to lie, to
cheat, to insult people, to gossip fraudulently etc. The above said statement is
not only desirous in Islam but is found in nature and is equally important for
the human community; but in Islam, it is emphasized to observe righteous
deeds, so Holy Qur’an says:
“As for those who lead a righteous life, male or female, while believing, they
enter Paradise; without the slightest injustice.” [4:124]

Articles of Faith Page 25

Jihad emphasizes on the individual; “Say! ‘ O my People, do your best, and so
will I. You will surely find out who the ultimate victors are.’ Certainly, the
wicked will never succeed.” [6:135].

STAGES:

1. While living in Makkah, Hazrat Muhammad (SAWS) and his followers did
not retaliate or fight. The Qur’an teaches in this regard in 73:10-11 to be
patient and bear with those who deny the truth. The Prophet (SAWS) bear a
hard time with patience and in praying Allah for getting freedom of
religious deeds.
2. Migration was allowed to the believers in order to save their lives as the
cruelties had crossed the limits by pagans as stated in Holy Qur’an in 8:63 & 72;
“ ___________________________________________________________”
3. Several months after arrival in Madinah, the pagans started using the
trade of Muslims and violating the territorial rules and when Muslims began to
stop them, they started threatening them in order to get financial benefits. At
that time permission was granted to defend themselves by fighting and

Articles of Faith Page 26

killing those who impose fighting on Believers as said in Holy Qur’an in Surah 22
verses 39-41, 2:190, & 2:193.
4. Finances were ordered to sacrifice in defending the cause of Islam before,
during and after the battles fought against pagans/unbelievers.
5. Jihad was also conducted through Pen / documentation while writing
treaties with Jews, Christians and Makkans and later by writing letters to the
several Emperors by Holy Prophet (SAWS).
Therefore, JIHAD is categorized as:
1. JIHAD-BIL-NAFS,
2. JIHAD-BIL-QALAM,
3. JIHAD-BIL-MAAL,
4. JIHAD-BIL-QITAL (Jaan),
5. JIHAD-FIS-SABILLAH (may be included in all above said categories).

The concept of Jihad is one of the highly misunderstood Islamic concepts.

Unfortunately, the West sees it as mere fighting against disbelief and the West;
while it is meant as struggle for good and elimination of evil. So, Jihad and
terrorism have no relation wit each other nor is there anything common
between them. Holy Qur’an enjoins upon believers to wage Jihad, so that
mischief-mongering is halted and peace comes to our planet, earth. The
spiritual struggle for self-purification of the soul is the greatest Jihad as it is
declared by Prophet Muhammad (SAWS) as Jihad-e-Akbar.
