Smart Manufacturing: a Milestone for Industry

How can advanced technology make manufacturing companies more competitive? As pressure builds to
provide increasingly customized products, companies are investing in simulation, additive manufacturing,
autonomous robots, and the data analytics that are needed to capture and make sense of the information these
systems generate. The article by Rajesh Angadi, Program Manager at Cisco Systems related to Data Science,

(f) Ultrasonic Meters: These meters are
non-intrusive i.e. no obstruction is placed in
the fluid stream or any reduction of the flow
channel. They create no pressure drop in
the fluid. The rate of flow is measured from
outside the tube. It uses sound waves to
determine the velocity of a fluid flowing in a
pipe. At no flow conditions, the frequencies
of an ultrasonic wave transmitted into a
pipe and its reflections from the fluid are
the same. When the fluid moves faster, the
frequency shift increases linearly. Though
not highly accurate, ultrasonic flowmeters
are commonly used to measure flow of

IIoT, Cyber Security & Instrumentation - A Step towards the Future

The advent of information technology has changed the way we work, with a number of smart
gadgets continuously connected to the internet. These gadgets are the ‘things’ referred to in
the term ‘Internet of Things’ (IoT). When extended to manufacturing and production industries,
this is known as the ‘Industrial Internet of Things’ (IIoT). The ‘things’ in IIoT are intelligent
machines that share data using advanced communication technologies for more reliable,
efficient and safe operation of the plant. Most of the devices are hooked to the network allowing
instantaneous monitoring and control. IIoT has the potential to unleash benefits by providing
information to be used in increasing plant availability, resulting in operating the process

Gas Analyzer
LYONS, CO – AMETEK MOCON’s Baseline 9100 Gas Analyzer performs the analysis
of residual solvents in air p ethanol, isopropanol (IPA) and acetone—that are used in
semiconductor cleanroom environments, ie, solvent stations.
During semiconductor fabrication processes, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are
emitted primarily from diffusion and cleaning during wet-etching processes. The residual
presence of these solvents can be detrimental to production yields and to worker health.
MOCON’s Baseline 9100 Gas Analyzer combines the selectivity of gas chromatography
with the sensitivity of a photo ionization detector (PID). The analysis provides an interference free response to ethanol (if desired), IPA,
and acetone in air - no preconcentration necessary. Competitive analytical approaches that require preconcentration exhibit much longer
analysis times, are much more costly, more complex, and suffer from poor reproducibility.
The solvents are detected and accurately quantified to sub-ppb levels in under 3 minutes with ethanol producing no interference. The
instrument is sensitive to below 5 ppb for both IPA and acetone employing MOCON’s standard Baseline PID, and <0.1 ppb using MOCON’s
high sensitivity Baseline PID.

Pumps and Compressors

Blackmer offers STX Series transport pumps ideal for loading and unloading corrosive and non-corrosive
liquids – sulfonic acids, specialty chemicals, solvents, latex paints, liquid sugars and vegetable oils – that
are not compatible for use with cast iron pumps. These pumps offer the best combined characteristics of
sustained high-level performance, energy efficiency, trouble-free operation and low maintenance costs.
Blackmer ML Series pumps are ideal for liquid-terminal operations that require high-capacity product
transfer, top or bottom loading/unloading and blending at the rack. ML Series pumps offer tremendous
self-priming and high-suction capabilities that enable them to clear tanks of product more effectively and
efficiently than competitive models. ML pumps can handle fluid viscosities from 30 to 500,000 ssu (1.0
to 108,000 cS) with flow rates up to 600 gpm (136 m3/h) and at operating temperatures as high as 400oF
(206oC). S Series screw pumps with or without external timing gears and bearings are self-priming double-ended positive displacement pumps
that offer outstanding performance in the most demanding liquid-storage terminal applications. Blackmer twin and triple screw designs provide
complete axial balancing of the rotating screws and their timing technologies eliminate metal-to-metal contact with the pump. S Series pumps are
also ATEX-certified for use in explosive or dangerous environments. Blackmer HD Series reciprocating gas compressors provide quiet, efficient
transfer of a wide range of liquefied gases. HD Series compressors also have been designed to handle the vapour recovery of gases that are
common in terminal applications. The vapour recovery aspect of this application captures vapours before they are released in the environment,
allowing terminals to be more environmentally responsible and compliant while ensuring the most complete product transfer possible.

Electro Magnetic Meter

The instrument works on the principle of Faraday’s law of Electromagnetic Induction. A magnetic field
is generated by the instrument in the flow tube. The fluid flowing through this magnetic field generates
a voltage that is proportional to the flow velocity. This voltage is measured by the electronics and a
corresponding output provided. Universal power supply accepts any voltage from 90 to 265 V AC.

Bi-directional flow measurement measures the flow in both forward and reverse directions. Built-in
totaliser provides a separate totalized volume value for flow in each direction.

Remote monitoring is easy monitoring of the process even in hard to reach places.Conforms
to International Standards - designed to meet global requirements and available with
international approvals.

Ultrasonic Sensors for Measuring Storm Water Runoff

Ultrasonic level transmitters, on the other hand, are a widely recognized alternative to hydrostatic
pressure level measurement for storm water applications. AMETEK Drexelbrook’s USonic-R level
transmitter is a perfect choice for storm water measurement.
USonic-R is FM and ATEX approved. It has a patented SmartGain feature that eliminates the issue of
false echoes. SmartGain quickly recognizes pumping station obstructions, such as ladders and pipes
in sewage wells, helping ensure accurate level readings. USonic-R picks up data from two separate
ultrasonic sensors placed at different locations. Data is logged, flow calculated from weirs or flumes
and signals can be sent to emergency pumps. The transmitter also can deliver crucial data, showing
the state of sewage wells, basins, drilling mud and fluid in tanks.
USonic-R incorporates a converter and a datalogger. Data is delivered either as a 4-20 mA or Modbus signal, which allows for easy
integration into the most common SCADA systems. The instrument works seamlessly with RTUs, simple pump controls or PLCs. This
is important for remote installations in which intelligent or autonomously operation is required for level measurement, flow calculation
or pump activation when necessary. The versatile USonic-R even allows two individual ultrasonic sensors to be connected, enabling
users to calculate the sum or differential of pumped volume by measuring each side of two basin walls. The unit is weather proof, IP66/
NEMA6-P rated and UV protected, meaning that, in general, the device requires no additional protection. Drexelbrook offers a full range
of level measurement solutions, including RF Admittance/Capacitance, TDR/GWR, Radar, Ultrasonic, Magnetostrictive, Hydrostatic,
Vibration, Conductive and Float Devices.

Monitoring and Controlling Brakes Intelligently

Brake technology 4.0 stands for intelligent monitoring modules, by which mayr power transmission sets new
standards. The modules such as the ROBA-brake-checker and the ROBA-torqcontrol monitor safety brakes easily
and quickly or facilitate the even and smooth deceleration of machines and devices. The ROBA-brake-checker
module operates without sensors. Instead, it analyzes current and voltage and recognizes the movement of the
armature disk. In addition to the switching condition, the module can also deduce the temperature, wear and
tension path or tensile force reserve, ie, whether the magnet still has sufficient force to attract the armature disk.
On reaching the tensile force reserve, the ROBA-brake-checker emits a warning signal, early enough so that a
defined operating time of the brake is still possible. Within this time, the machine operator can undertake specific
maintenance in coordination with their work process. The ROBA-brake-checker is now available in a design for AC
voltage. Another version of the module will also in future take on the supply of the brake, and as a result, replace
the rectifier. Switching condition monitoring and brake control are therefore combined in one device.
For applications, which require braking torque control in addition to status monitoring, mayr power transmissions provides ROBA-
torqcontrol. It shares the features of the ROBA-brake-checker and can also change the level of the braking torque in operation through
purposeful influencing of current and voltage. As a result, devices and machines can be evenly and gently decelerated. The ROBA-
torqcontrol module permits the development of control loops and brakes movements intelligently. Another module to continuously monitor
the switching condition of the brakes is the safe brake control ROBA-SBCplus. This module has been developed in collaboration with the
company Pilz for the protection of people according to standards regarding functional safety. The ROBA-SBCplus module must reliably
interrupt the current in the magnetic coil when the brake is switched Off. The module operates with wear-free electronic semi-conductors,
and as a result achieves practically unlimited switching frequency and switching reliability. Furthermore, an integrated plausibility check is
conducted through the evaluation of the release monitoring signals. The evaluations of the switching states and the return signal therefore
permit reliable error diagnostics. This permits creep errors which influence on the switching times, eg, increasing wear, to be detected in
due time. The reliable ROBA-SBCplus brake control unit is type-certified by TÜV Süd (Technical Inspectorate, Southern Germany) and
can be used up to the highest Performance Level PLe and Safety Integrity Level (SIL) 3.

Foam Control & Monitoring System

Level measurement experts Hycontrol offers a new SureSense+ foam control and detection system.
Foam causes issues across a wide range of industries from wastewater treatment to food production.
Problems caused by foam include pollution, contamination, product loss and downtime, and clean-up
costs. Excess foam can also damage equipment such as pumps, compressors and filters on applications
such as AD digesters in energy from waste. Anti-foam agents are effective in reducing or removing
foam but are expensive and hard to dose correctly as foam is a varying process and a constantly
changing substance. The traditional solution to this has been to constantly dose anti-foam chemicals
in high quantities, whether foam is present or not. This overdosing is not only wasteful but extremely
costly. To overcome this, Hycontrol’s SureSense+ system utilises patented IMA (Intelligent Multi-Action)
technology to monitor and reactively control foam levels in a process. This purpose-designed system
is reliable, accurate and is not adversely affected by product build-up or contamination on the probe.
SureSense+ can have up to three foam probes connected to one controller with independent dosing control. Liquid detection capability
also provides greater process control and a proportional dosing algorithm further reduces unnecessary anti-foam usage to cut expensive
waste to the absolute minimum. Probes can have up to three sensor points, across a length of up to 3 metres. Additional features include
additional relay outputs and a clear LCD interface which provides a simple menu-driven set-up.
