WHOLE HOME DVR (MRV) QUICK REFERENCE GUIDE

Whole Home DVR (MRV): DIRECTV’s technology which allows video and data to be shared between receivers within a
SWiM installation. An MRV installation begins with a SWiM installation; this includes a SWiM LNB or Module, SWiM
splitter, SWiM power supply and SWiM compatible receivers.

MRV can be used 2 ways:

A. MRV – Sharing of recorded content between MRV compatible receivers.
B. MRV with Internet access – allowing customers to experience MRV and the following.
1. Internet Sharing
2. Pay Per View
3. DOD
4. DIRECTV 2 PC
5. TV Apps

Important Note: An internet connection is not required for MRV to operate.

(Sat In 1 (SWM)), to the SWiM network. See HR20-100 special installation requirement.
** BSF needs to be installed at the receiver's tuner port.

HR20-100 Special Installation Requirement

HR20-100 receiver, while being MRV compliant, does not have

the ability to power a DECA unit through the Sat-1 (SWM) port
and requires a special configuration to connect to the MRV
network.

Solution: A 2-way splitter must be used to connect the receiver

via the DECA (SAT IN 2) and a BSF (SAT IN 1 (SWM)) to the SWiM Add Band-Stop Filter to SAT-1 Input
network. See diagram.

Whole Home DVR need to know information

 MRV service or Authorization on the customer’s account is needed for MRV to work.
 MRV installation will not allow for diplexing of off air signals or cable modem internet.
 If the customer requires off air channel access then a separate coaxial cable must be run from the off air antenna to
the receiver(s).
 For customers who require more than 8 tuners and have SWiM 8 module(s) installed:
o Replace the SWiM 8 with a SWiM 16 unit (*See SWiM 16 Module)
o MRV does not bridge across multiple SWiM 8 modules.
 Home Plugs must be disconnected and replaced with DECA units to allow the use of MRV.
o Leave the Home Plug devices with the customer.
 A pay per view recording must be purchased on the receiver which was used to download/record the pay per view
before any other MRV capable receiver can view it.
 Content which is stored on any MRV compliant receiver can be accessed by any MRV compliant receiver, however
there are limitations:
o A recorded program can only be viewed by the receiver which recorded the program and to only one other
receiver at the same time, in other words multiple receivers cannot view the same recording from the same DVR
if it’s already streaming to another receiver.
o However, this also means a customer can watch the same recorded program in 2 rooms, as long as the recorded
program is local to one of the receivers.
 DIRECTV on DEMAND
o Non-DVR receivers can’t see channel 1000
o DOD content that has been recorded to an HD-DVR is available for MRV access.
 DIRECTV2PC
o Only works from HD-DVR to PC (not HD only receiver to PC)
 Parental Controls
o Parental controls are set by the receiver directly connected to the TV used to view the program.
o For example, if the customer has a HD-DVR in the living room and another HD receiver in the kid's playroom,
they may choose to have the kid's playroom parental controls set to limit showing PG or less. If they try to MRV
something from the living room HD-DVR that is rated R, it will be blocked using the playroom's parental controls.
This is independent from whether or not the living room is set up with parental controls.
 Receiver call backs: Call backs are performed in the MRV installation using the 2.3MHz FSK SWiM communications
frequency. For example, a R16 receiver can conduct a “Call Back” utilizing a receiver in the MRV installation which has
internet access. (*See SWiM 16 Module section for more call back information; FSK signals are not bridged between
the two SWM outputs of the SWiM 16 module)
 All unused ports must be terminated.

SWiM 16 Module

 The SWiM 16 Module is to be used when the customer’s requirements exceeds 8 tuners within the MRV
installation.
 The SWiM 16 Module can be powered from the DC/PWR port or
from the SWM 1/PWR port via a green labeled Power Inserter.
o Note: If the Power Inserter is connected to the DC/PWR
port of the SWiM 16 Module do not connect any receivers
to the IRD side of the Power Inserter. The DC/PWR port side
of the SWiM 16 Module does not support any SWiM
channels and is strictly used to provide power to the SWiM
16 module.

SWiM 16 Module key benefits:

 DIRECTV MRV capable across all 16 SWiM channels.
o Means, that all MRV capable receivers within the installation
which are connected to the SWiM 16 modules SWiM 1 and SWiM 2 output ports will share content, view
content, and share Broadband access (if internet access is part of the installation)
 UL listed as a “Bonding Device”
o Means that a ground block is not required on the outputs from the LNB
o Follow all NEC, state, and local codes regarding grounding and bonding
 16 SWiM® channels total
o 8 SWiM channels via SWiM 1/PWR port (CH1-CH8)
o 8 SWiM channels via SWiM 2 port (CH9-CH16)
 Requires SWiM 29V DC power supply

Limitations regarding installations:

 No cascading allowed from main SWiM 16 legacy ports to a secondary SWiM 16 module
 Recommend using SWiM Expanders instead

Call back on SWiM 16

 The SWiM 16 module does not bridge the 2.3MHz FSK call back signal between the two SWM outputs.
 SWiM 16 modules requires that both SWM port 1 and SWM port 2 at least have one MRV compliant receiver on
each port with broadband/internet access to allow the 2.3MHz FSK call back to work. See diagram.
 Note: As an alternative to an installation that does not have “Internet” using the DECA BB access, install a phone
line to at least one receiver on each of the SWiM port (1&2) cable runs.
CALL BACK FLOW

1. D12 sends callback through the HR20 (which is 1. D12’s and R16’s do SWM callback through D12’s
internet-connected through MRV) phone line not through MRV / DECA-BB
2. HR20 relays callback through MRV to DECA-BB 2. D12 on SWM2 can callback using HR24/H24/H23 via
DECA-BB provides link through Router to DECA-BB
Internet callback
