plural forms, which relate to person agreement with the subject of a sentence.
Different forms of these do, have, & be functioning as main and auxiliary verbs:

behave as pronouns or determiners – distance and time can be conveyed – they agree in number with
nouns modified – when functioning as subjects, they agree with the verb
o As pronouns they replace nouns: This is great – I’ll tell her that
o As determiners they modify a noun: This man sold me the TV – These comedians are so funny

o Countable: singular or plural, referring to things we can count – parks, kids, fingers...
o Uncountable: always singular, referring to concepts and substances that cannot be counted –
milk, sand, love...
Collective Nouns: nouns that refer to a group of people or things (company, army, public, team) can be
used with a singular or plural verb, although generally used with a singular verb because we think of
them as a unit or in an impersonal way (replaceable by it) – they can be used as plural verbs when we
think of them as a group of people or things, or in a more personal way. My family is big. / My family
are coming to my wedding.
o Uncountable Nouns: nouns which do not take plural form – refer to abstract ideas, concepts,
uncountable substances: happiness, milk, bread, sugar...
o Cannot be used with articles a/an or with numbers without a reference to a countable unit: a
can of coffee, piece of cake, glass of water, loaf of bread...
Sometimes can be used as countable nouns but with a change of meaning: I heard a noise / There’s too
much noise, there is no paper / He wrote a paper... (room, coffee, light, etc.)
o Much is used in negative and interrogative sentences with uncountable nouns: We don’t have
much time - How much money does she make?
o Much can be used in affirmative sentences with intensifiers such as so or too to give emphasis: I
have so much time – thee is too much homework...
o Many is used with plural nouns: There are many young people in the class
o Many is used with the interrogative pronoun how: How many kids does she have?

little money (negative – not much money)
o A Little is also used with uncountable nouns and means some: give me a little time....
Present Continuous
Present Continuous: gives the idea that an action is in progress in the present – The kids are playing
video games.
o Used to talk about actions that are happening at the moment of speaking – she is sleeping...
o Used to talk about temporary actions that are happening for a period of time around now, but
not exactly at the moment we speak – are you working these days?
o Used to talk about actions that happen very often, usually to express anger, irritation or
complaint: they are always griping about having to do the dishes...
o Used to talk about future events that will happen at a particular time; We are taking the train
tomorrow night. If the future event is part of a timetable or schedule, a present simple tense is
often used – We have a baseball game on Tuesday.
Prepositions
Prepositions: words that connect certain parts of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives & adverbs) to
another part of a sentence, showing some kind of relationship between them – generally followed by a
noun (or noun equivalent) to form adjective (describing noun phrase) or adverb equivalents (showing
relationships such as direction, time, place, purpose, cause, and manner)
o Prepositions of Place: indicate location of thing or action – above, at, below, between, in, near,
on....
Prepositions
o Prepositions of Time: indicate timing or event or action – showing precise time, duration or
frequency – in, on, at...
Must & have to both express necessity and obligation at the highest degree. These two modals are
often differentiated by calling them subjective of objective. When the speaker decides that something is
important, must is used (quite subjective); when someone else other than the speaker makes the
decision, have to is used (quite objective):
I must go to school on Saturday to finish my report. (subjective)
I have to park in a different place, otherwise I’ll get a ticket. (objective)
Even though this seems to be the rule, very often usage does not follow it and people tend to use have
to more frequently. Have to is used more commonly when the speaker wants to convey obligation
since they reserve must to convey an assumption, or stress urgency, insistence or importance.
Can
Different forms of modal verbs can be used to express different time frame. Most modals do not who
an evident connection to time and can normally be used to express either present or future time:
He can have dessert now. (present possibility)
She can meet us tomorrow. (future possibility)
Adverbs
Adverbs of Time: used to say when something happened. We generally put them at the end of the
sentence. They show emphasis when used at the beginning.
Adjectives
o Descriptive: directly describes noun’s characteristics, like size, shape, condition, purpose... (vs.
limiting)
Can is used to express present and future ability; could is used to express past ability, be able to can be
used in all tenses to show a clear time frame. They all express ability, and their negative counterparts
(can’t, couldn’t and was/were not able to) express lack of ability.
These three modals can be used to express knowledge, skill, physical ability, strength, nature or
design:
Be able to is used with similar meanings and is more flexible with time frames. The only difference
between can and be able to is the latter is used especially when referring to people or animate
creatures:
He is able to speak Chinese.
She was able to type fast when she was younger.
I have not been able to jump high since my accident.
An ant will be easily able to carry several times its body weight.
When could refers to ability, it is the past form of can. It usually equals was/were able to.
He couldn’t see clearly before the laser operation.
He wasn’t able to see clearly before the laser operation.
Could, however, is not generally used when describing one action that a person was able to do on one
occasion in the past, the phrasal modal be able to is preferred.
I was able to finish my studies before dinner yesterday.
Could can be used for a single event, and equals was/were able to when used with stative verbs of
perceptions such as see, hear, smell, feel, taste, remember and understand.
We could hear her talking on the phone, so we knew she was home.
We were able to hear her talking on the phone, so we knew she was home.
Some speakers intend gradations of difference between could and was able to, but these differences are
individual or regional, and don’t conform to generally accepted grammar rules.
In questions, the meaning remains the same; however, the word order changes slightly, as with all
auxiliaries. Can and could precede subjects (can also express possibility and permission); be also
precedes subjects, but able to follows the subject:
Can you speak French?
Could you reach your mother by phone?
Is he able to play in the game?
Will can also be used to express ability, although it is less frequently used than the rest of the modals
mentioned in this section of the chapter:
This treatment will cure anything.
Expressing Time
Superlative Adjectives
Note: some one-syllable adjectives such as clear, safe, true, free, wise, etc. Take either er & est, or
more & most.
Note: some two-syllable adjectives such as clever, common, stupid, narrow, gentle, friendly, simple,
etc. take either er & est, or more & most.
Adverb
Past
Past Simple: shows that something happened at one particular time in the past – it began and ended in
the past – Mary played tennis last Thursday.
o To form ad ed to the end of a regular verb; d to verbs ending in e; ied substitutes y for verbs
ending in y
o For past habits or states which are now finished, we use used to + base form: I used to smoke a
pack a day...
Different forms of these do, have, & be functioning as main and auxiliary verbs:
Time Main Verb Singular Main Verb Plural Aux Verb Singular Aux Verb Plural
Do: Present She does my laundry. We do our homework. She doesn’t drink. We don’t smoke.
Do: Past He did me a favour. You did your share. She didn’t do it. They didn’t do it.
Have: Present He has a beer. They have cash. He has finished. We have been there.
Have: Past I had a party last night. We had it ready. They had known. He hadn’t discovered it.
Be: Present I am pleased. You are both crazy. She is working. They are running.
Be: Past She was home at 6. They were here. I was robbed. We were laughing.
Future
Future Simple: shows an action that will happen at a particular time in the future – We will go shopping
tonight.
o Composed of two part (will/shall + base form of bare infinitive; I will go to the show tonight.
o Used to predict future events; We’ll be on time.
o Used t o express a decision, usually made at the moment of speaking; I’ll spring for lunch.
o Used for promises, threats, warnings, requests, hopes, offers, ordering food, etc; I’ll carry your
keys; you’ll get sick if you stand in the rain; I’ll write every day; I’ll have a beer.
o Used for uncontrollable future actions or events; The storm will hit tonight.
o To express a prediction; The Steelers are going to win the Super Bowl.
o To express a prediction when there is evidence that something will happen in the near future
(going to); Look at the clouds! It’s going to snow.
o To express a prior plan which has already been made before the time of speaking (going to); Joe
bought a ring because he’s going to get married.
o To express willingness (will); I’ll help you paint your house.
o To talk about something we intend to do (going to for intention & will for detail or comments);
I’m going to ride to work tomorrow. It will be fun!
Note: To express movement we use present continuous, especially with the verbs go and come; I’m
going to the store for some cheese and wine.
When we make guess about the present, future, or past that we are less certain about, we can talk
about probabilities rather than assumptions. The degree of certainty is less compared with the previous
group of modals; however, the meaning is similar.
Should, ought to, and be likely to are used to express probable guesses about the present or future with
a slightly weaker degree of certainty (around 70%) than must, though a little higher than the modals
used to describe possibilities. This group of modals show the speaker might have some evidence to
make a guess. Compare to must:
She must be tired by now (almost certain)
She should be tired by now.
She is likely tired by now. (used less frequently)
Should and ought to can be also used to express expectations about future events.
By next month, he should feel totally at home in his apartment.
The weather ought to improve by next month.
The least degree of certainty that can be expressed is possibility, and within this modality we can also
identify strong and weak possibility. This group of modals express less than 50% certainty and they
show the speaker’s guesses are probably not based on evidence.
May and can are used to describe stronger possibilities than might and could, in their affirmative and
negative forms:
He may know what you’re talking about. I think he overheard your last conversation.
He might not admit that he was eavesdropping unless you tell him you know about it.
In the interrogative form, may can also convey the modality of permission; this isn’t evidenced in the
rest of the modals used to express possibility:
May I stay home for the rest of the day to get over my cold? (permission + possibility)
What might you have for lunch? (possibility)
Can you join us on Monday? (possibility)
Where could they be? (possibility)
Adverbs
Adverbs of Frequency: used to say how often something happened. We usually put them before the
main verb, but after the verb to be.
