Around Hicksville

Fall is in the air…

Bob…Thanks for posting the photo of Sharon and me with our Colorado family in the
9/1/18 issue of HixNews. That picture was actually taken in Salt Lake City while our
youngest granddaughter, age 12, was competing at the Level 9 Western Championships
in gymnastics. Her wonderful performance there earned her a trip to Boston to skip
Level 10 and qualify as an elite gymnast. At the Elite National Championships in
Columbus, Ohio, which took place at the end of July, she took 1st place in Vault and
finished 5th in the nation in the all-around competition (all 4 women's events) for the 12-
13 elite age group. We travel to most of her big meets. It's reliving our daughter's career
all over again as Carlie's Mom, our daughter, Kelly, was a full scholarship gymnast at
The University of Michigan. She co-captained the team that finished 2nd at NCAA
Nationals in 1995 and was a 2nd team NCAA All-American during her college days. Her
daughter, Carlie (Carmela Rose Keuneke) is following in her footsteps and may have a
shot at the Olympics someday! She is known as "CJ" to her teammates as there's an older
Carlie at her Denver, Colorado gym. "CJ" seems to have stuck at the elite level too!
I'm also amazed at the response that the article I posted about the "Good Old Days" when
we were kids! To again clarify, I didn't write it. I received it on Facebook from my
brother-in-law and reposted it because I fully agreed with it.
We had a wonderful river cruise on the Rhine River from Amsterdam to Basel,
Switzerland and just arrived home this past Thursday night, 8/30, after a 2-day extension
in beautiful Lucerne, Switzerland. With all the time I spent in Europe, both in the Army
and in business, we had never been to Lucerne, a city surrounded by the Alps and home
to the wonderful Lake Lucerne. I'll write a story for HixNews as soon as I can catch up
and I'll include some choice photos too. As you know, the trip was scheduled as a
celebration of our 50th Wedding Anniversary. Joining us were my brother, Santo (HHS
1964) and sister Candy (Carmela Jane, HHS 1972) and their spouses, which included
Peter Colling (HHS 1972), also a Hicksville grad. Another family couple joined us also
and they actually celebrated their 50th on the cruise. Ours was last January 6th, when it
was too cold in Europe to do this river cruise, hence the delay until now. Santo and his
wife, Jeanne, celebrated their 48th on the cruise and Candy & Peter will celebrate their
42nd in October.
More later this month!

Happy Halloween for seniors…

You know you are too old to Trick or Treat when:
You get winded from knocking on the door.
You have to have someone else chew the candy for you.
You ask for high fiber candy only.
When someone drops a candy bar in your bag, you lose your balance and fall over.
People say: "Great Boris Karloff Mask," and you're not wearing a mask.
When the door opens you yell, "Trick or . . . and can't remember the rest.
By the end of the night, you have a bag full of restraining orders.
You have to carefully choose a costume that won't dislodge your hairpiece.
You're the only Power Ranger in the neighborhood with a walker.
And the number one reason Seniors should not go Trick Or Treating...
You keep having to go home to pee.
No matter, have a HAPPY HALLOWEEN regardless!!!

HixNews had a note from Tony Genovese (class of 1961) saying that he had most of the
mustangs shown in the below photo. That’s a lot of horsepower!!!

The below was in the September issue of HixNews. Included

below the narration are comments from former students.
I grew up in Hicksville, LI, New York. On Sunday's you didn't ask if you were going to
church you put on your "Sunday clothes" and went ... It was during a time when everyone
treated each other like Family. We went outside to play, we got dirty... We bought chips
& candy from the corner store. We played Red Light, Green Light, Kick the Can, Simon
Says, Hide and Seek, Dodge Ball, Red Rover, Baseball, Softball, and Football. We could
ride our bikes to the store, or the park, or down a back road and stay all day. We even
swam in the pond or lake when we had the chance. We ate beans & hot dogs, mac, and
cheese & peanut butter sandwiches. We walked or rode a bike everywhere and never
worried about safety.
We never thought to lock our windows or doors at night. We slept with our windows
open at night. We had chores to do around the house; we helped clean off the table after a
meal and ate our meals as a family at a table together. We weren't AFRAID OF
ANYTHING, 'cept our parents.
If you fell down you would just get back up. If someone had a fight, that's what it was...a
fight. Kids weren't afraid of fake guns when I grew up. Real guns were just a part of life
and we respected them as well as our parents, our teachers, the American flag, the
principal, and God.
We said the Pledge of Allegiance
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4sj4kUD5TA
every time we went to school.
We watched our mouths around our elders because we knew if we DISRESPECTED any
adult there would be a price to pay and we had manners and respect otherwise someone
else's parents would put you in your place. I would not trade anything for the childhood
we had, for we had enough and we had love and family harmony and all that made us the
adults we are today.
Please re-post with your town if you're proud that you came from a close-knit community
and will never forget where you came from! Amen. I miss those days!!

Joe Carfora 1962

I grew up in Hicksville and went to high school with your brother

Santo Carfora. Lived by Bob Flanagan. We lived like you did.

Kathryn Monnia Wolff 1964

Santo has lived in Janesville, WI since 1970. Have lost track of Bob Flanagan, but knew
him well back in the day. We called him "Doofer Bob"!...Joe
Bobby Flanagan

is living in Hicksville in the family home on Cedar Street.

Kathryn

I graduated with Santo and grew up doing what all the kids did in Hicksville. Last time I
was in Hicksville was 1978, and I don't think I would want to see all the changes.

Connie Casella Shein 1964

I was there in 2012 for my 50th HHS Reunion. While there are many changes, there are
many things still the same too.
Joe

Grew up in Hicksville, and yes it was a close-knit community...those were the good old
days.....still friends with many that grew up in Hicksville and we still keep in touch. We
didn't have to be afraid to go to malls, movies or stay outside late, just sitting around
talking to friends, neighbors. To bring back those days would be great. Today’s kids are
missing so much. Glad I grew up here in Hicksville. Which I'm sure many of you feel the
same way.

Linda Mastrosanti Aragoncillo 1961

Hicksville was a special place to grow up, my closest friends are the ones I went to high
school with. My husband was my high school sweetheart, Dennis Cauley, class of 1962.

Sherry Mallen Cauley 1964

My husband Karl Fred told me he lived behind Dennis in Hicksville.

Jeanne Gattuso Fred 1967

I remember Dennis well as he and I were in the same class, 1962.
Joe

Joe. Well written. I agree wholeheartedly with everything you said. What year did you
graduate? I grew up on High Street, off of Old Country Rd. Best years of my life. Still in
contact with many of the friends I grew up with. Only games you didn’t mention were
stickball and stoop ball. I definitely would like to hear from you again.

Doug Lozel 1968

1962 grad of HHS. Grew up on Ruth Drive near the Willets Avenue School, just east of
Broadway and not far from Mid-Island Plaza. Also still maintain a good number of
contacts from Hicksville, even though I haven't lived there since college. HixNews helps
in doing that!
Joe

Doug- good to see your name on here. I remember like it was yesterday when I got to go
with you to the Gertz mall to see Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris. Also when we played
stickball on High Street.

Mike Heroy 1969

I remember it too. Here’s what the old Doug Lozel looks like these days at the age of 68.

Doug

Joe…I grew up on Switzerland Road... & played with Candy…with our Barbie dolls! I
remember going with your family either to pick u up or drop u off at Rutgers. I remember
having a dinner at your house.. & your mom let us have kool-aid with dinner. I thought
that was as so cool! We moved to Willow Place & I went to HTHS.
Deborah Morse Ackley, Holy Trinity High School 1972

My Mom always welcomed all our friends, who often wound up at her dinner table. She's
well remembered for that! Candy has lived with her husband, Peter Colling, HHS 1972 in
Arizona, since 1983. We love going out there to visit when we can.
Joe

Great job representing our childhood! It was the best! I grew up on High Street too, class
of ‘77 and I loved our little corner of the town I too have a Hicksville high school
sweetheart who I married and my brother, Dennis Carter married his as well.

Donna Carter Lafferty

I’ve read that before, I do not remember anyone from Hicksville playing Red Rover,
there were no ponds nor lakes to swim in and very few of us lived near a corner store.
Girls played Hop Scotch and jumped rope. We had to re-learn the pledge of allegiance
when a conservative Congress added “under God” and we had to say the
Lords Prayer in assemblies with non-Catholics mumbling along at the end. We were
afraid that a bomb would hit us and second and our eyeballs would melt. Duck and cover
didn’t seem like a real solution. We weren’t allowed to go to the pool because we might
contract polio. We had mumps, chicken pox, and measles. It was what it was and rose-
colored glasses doesn’t improve nor change the past.

Fran Wallach Gallo 1961

Everyone; I didn't write this piece, but strongly agree with it! That's why I shared it as I
thought of Hicksville this way, especially after moving from Brooklyn to Queens and
then to Hicksville at age 11.
Joe
At first, I thought you wrote this, but Mom always locked the doors! So many wonderful
memories! Looking forward to our HHS reunion & connecting with family & close
friends. Thanks to FB, I’m in touch with the gals I grew up with! Such a joy to connect
with them!

Carmela Carfora Colling 1973

That is wonderful and so true! The Children are missing so much today. They aren’t
outside playing like you kids did. I grew up in Hicksville and we had a wonderful time. I
am 95 years old and appreciate the old days.

Rose McGeever
Thanks as well...class of 70...grew up on West Marie Street...with the Faltings
Maniscalco, Fazio, Rhineharts, Elizabeth Voorhies Lang, Dave Burt. I remember playing
with horses at Stolz's...Gertz...riding my new Schwinn 10 speed through the window at
Newberry's.

Mike Nervik 1971

September 4, 2018…An unbelievable evening w/ husband Joe & friends Carmen & Ed
at Coast Guard House Restaurant Narragansett, RI. Phenomenal food & great friends
created a wonderful, unforgettable time!!!

Linda…Hope you saw the photo spread in the September issue of HixNews that featured
your wedding 55 years ago.
Love yah
Bob

Yes, I saw the photo spread. It was beautiful and we thank you so much for adding
the spread to HixNews. We can't believe that this past May, we celebrated 55 years
of a wonderful marriage. We have 3 children and 7 grandchildren and we were
recently blessed with our 7th grandchild, a little girl who is 2 months old and was
born a month early. She is precious and doing great. Her name is Giselle Victoria
and her big sister, Vanessa Louise. Today is Vanessa’s first day in 1st. grade. Boy,
this has been one “HOT” crazy summer that went too fast and I’m not looking
forward to what's coming...oh well. Hope you are doing well. You do such a great
job with HixNews. Everyone who reads the newsletter should be so grateful to you
and all your hard work. I have some old photos from elementary school that I have
to post and, hopefully, will do that this week. Up until today, it's a little bit of a crazy
week. Our oldest grandson is getting married this weekend, so there are things to
prepare. He’s 31 years old and he and his bride will be living in New Jersey. Thank
you again for the beautiful spread in HixNews. I will be in touch soon, so have a
great day, stay cool and stay well. Your Forever Friend.

Linda Mastrosanti Aragoncillo 1961

My big brother just called and asked me if I remember the Merry

Go Round at Mid Island Plaza outside the S. Klein Department
store. I said no and I said, “you’re thinking of Jolly Rogers that
was on Hempstead Turnpike in Bethpage”. He said no, it was Mid
Island. Anybody remember? Is this true?

Carol Ann Luisi Saletto 1975

Yes. We would ride it and try to get the golden ring.

Don Zettwoch 1974

I remember it well and recall if you got a certain amount of those rings, you would get a
free ride.

Mindy Moscowitz Brintz 1973

I remember seeing ruins of what appeared to be roller coaster tracks at the back of the
parking lot by Burns Avenue in the 80s. Was that it?

Allison Lombardi Worthington 1989

No, that was the arch from the star.

Jay Weber 1970

My grandfather built that star.

Jyl Wabnoski Cosgrove 1977

I don’t know about the star. Please tell.

Allison
Here’s the star.

Randy Levy 1975

Thank you. I’m not sure if I’ve ever seen it. Was it there in the 70s?
Allison

Before they made it into a mall, there was a huge star in the approximate middle of the
mall. It was more or less north of the cross of the two aisles of the plaza. Rumor had it,
but I’m not sure if it’s true, that it was at the direct center of Nassau County. When it was
first made into a mall, the star was on the roof in the approximate same spot and the star
remained as scrap metal in the parking lot for years.

Lynne Lombardi 1971

Mid Island Plaza was built on the site of a boys orphanage and the story is that the
amusement area was on top of the boy's cemetery.

Jean Skvarich 1973

Really. Didn't know there was a cemetery there?

Cheryl Gries Brown 1972

It was called St John’s Protectory. All of us that grew up in the 1950's remember the
place. Many children in Hicksville found the old church a great place to explore and my
friend Connie and I were no different from other curious 12-year-olds; the exploration
was great fun. On one such outing, we discovered old pictures of the orphanage children
and being children ourselves, didn't see the importance of saving some Hicksville history
and, today, we wish we had!!!
Jean

HISTORY - The property was owned by Bernard Earle and in 1890 was deeded to the
Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn for an orphanage and farm. The orphanage grew
produce on the farm that was shipped, along with milk and dairy products to St. John's
and St. Joseph's Homes in Brooklyn. For many years there were 200 orphan boys at the
Protectory. The older boys worked the farm and tended a herd of about 50 cows. For 60
years, St. John's Protectory stood along Broadway where the Broadway Mall, opened in
1956, is now.
Ann Grunewald 1959

I remember the carousel at Mid-Island. It was in the front parking lot right outside the
bank.
Cheryl
Thanks for the insight. My brother, Vinnie, is 3 years older than me and I really thought
he was losing it.
Carol-Ann

Not only do I remember it...I rode it frequently. Later as an adult, the owner of a
company that I worked for showed me 4 of the actual horses from that merry go round
and apparently they were worth a lot of money.

Mike Endsley

We had Merry-Go-Rounds all over Hicksville in the 60’s. Remember the one at Farmer’s
Market? In the summertime “The Whip” ride would drive up and down the
neighborhoods like an ice cream truck. If you rode The Whip, you got Smarties as you
left.

Vin Fallacara 1977

The small amusement park was outside the back doors of Kresge's. I think it was gone by
1970. They had several rides. I'd love to see pics, but it seems they're rare.

Bill Hnatuk 1978

They actually had two Ferris wheels - the "newer" one was all white and called Round
cage wheel. Same size as other - I can't believe I remember this stuff. I know it was there
in 1963 - My friend moved in 1964 and we used to go there before he moved.

Regina Wade Sawicki 1974

My grandfather used to bring us there as a treat. He was compact, so he fit in the cages
with us on the tiny Ferris wheel.

Sandy Meyer Sanger 1977

Oh yeah! The cages! LoL

Arlene Grace
Hi Bob…I have a question that you may be able to answer. Years ago, when my uncle
came home from WWII, he and my aunt rented an apartment above a bar on Woodbury
Road near Cliff and Cedar Streets. My brother and sister and I cannot agree on the name.
Was it Petskys with a T in it or Peskeys? Or probably Petskies? Any info you can come
up with will be greatly appreciated. So how has your summer been in Georgia.? We've
had a lot of rain here in NC. Last two weeks was a thunderstorm almost every night. Take
care.

Kathy Margot Foley 1958

The note above was sent to about 20 people who were attending Hicksville High School
during the war years and several years later. Maybe you can answer the following
question from Kathy Foley? Thanks.
Buffalo Bob, HixNews

Kathy
I sent your note to several former students who were in school around the time
(1945/1946/1947) and no one remembers the bar. Cannot understand why, after all, it's
only 70 plus years ago. LOL!!! Sorry, we cannot answer your request. Hope you are well.
Buffalo Bob

Hi Bob...Thank you for all the trouble you went through to answer my question? Well,
guess where I found the answer? In the Hix newsletter. Someone wrote in about a bar that
his father used to go to and it was called Petskys as I thought. He described it perfectly,
including the small vegetable farm, chickens and even a bull, which I recall my aunt
running from. Unfortunately, I cannot remember which edition it was in. I save everyone
in a folder on my computer and read them from time to time. I enjoy the newsletter so
much. It brings back so many memories and keeps me informed about Hicksville. I
happened to see a picture of Pat Naso, who my mother dated when they were very young.
It said he was 85 yrs. old. I said my mother would have been 98, so how did they date?
Then I realized, it was a 2005 edition. Duh! A senior moment! Thank you again, and
thanks for a great newsletter.

Vicki

No idea. The boy on the top right looks familiar, though!

A note from Vicki to Greg Navoy…Can you fill in who I didn't recognize or correct any
errors?

I remember names more than faces, and, remember, I only moved to Hicksville during
3rd grade.
Robin
I think John Becker left of Willy. Richard Coppersmith end right of Lori maybe. Donald
Browning is to right of Greg.

John Ebbecke

I believe you are correct!

Birthdays & Anniversaries
I rarely ruminate on my military service. I took it for granted in many ways. Then on a
Veterans Day service some years ago the pastor had the hymn of each service played and
asked each veteran to stand for his branch. Then we veterans were gifted with rousing
applause and thanks for our service. I have never felt so proud and humbled to have
served in the Navy. And I then understood the great honor that accompanies service to
your country.
Today, waking to the passing of

John McCain I am once again humbled to have shared naval service with him, the
embodiment of service to your country.
And saddened at the loss of his light. His particular light is needed more today than ever
before. I hope and pray there is someone out there ready to rekindle his light and steady
us as McCain did.
Rest In Peace Senator. We will miss you but revel in your service. Thank you. Thank
you. Thank you.

Some Thoughts About Birthdays & Anniversaries

Thanks so much for the anniversary card and for remembering us. This year marked 62
since our wedding day.

Jacqueline MacLean Bausk & Joe Bausk 1950

This was our 60th and we’ve had many great years together. One of our most memorable
anniversaries was our 40th. We went to Hawaii for three weeks and toured 3 islands. That
was always my dream and Rudy made it come true. Thanks again for all you do and
always remembering.

Rudy Frey 1954 & Dolores Etzel Frey 1956

Thank you for the card and for thinking of me. It was much appreciated. Never thought
I’d be an octogenarian and I’m sure all my classmates feel the same way. Thanks again!!!

Bob McWilliams 1955

Thank you for the card and for thinking of us. It was much appreciated. Celebrated with
friends and family on Long Island. We are now back in Florida. Charlie Cava 1955 &
Barbara Fellows Cava 1956
Great birthday card. Thanks for remembering.

Pete Foster 1957 (Phil is the guy second from the left with the good looking lady)

Today, August 27, 2018, we celebrate our 57th Anniversary, and they said it wouldn't
last.

Ginny Frazer Caliguri 1961

Thanks for the birthday card. This birthday was especially wonderful as, husband Bob
and me, we were blessed by the arrival of our second “great” grandson.

Ronnie Gilson Birk 1961

Hi Bob!
Thank you for the birthday card, and for thinking of me. It was much appreciated!
Most of my birthdays have been memorable as the Carfora Family tradition is to call each
other for our birthdays. Now, they are even more memorable with social media, as I get
birthday greetings from all of my extended family and old classmates on Facebook and
the like! So, a Heartfelt Thank You to all for making my birthday Special!! I stopped
counting candles many birthdays ago, because there are too many to count! Now, I just
go by how I feel and I feel good!! All the best to you and to all the editors of HixNews
for keeping us in contact!!

Joe Carfora 1962

Hi Bob…Thanks so much for my birthday card. It's so nice to be remembered by you and
The Birthday Team! As you know, I'm sure, the years are going faster and faster so we all
should take advantage of every single day we are given. Stay well, sweet man!

Helen Luna Carr 1963

Thank you for the anniversary card and for thinking of us. It was much appreciated. Still
cannot believe we are married 49 years. The main event was 3 weeks after Woodstock.

Stan Katz & Sandi Notov Katz 1965

Thank you for the card and for thinking of me. It was much appreciated. And thanks to
the staff at HixNews for doing an outstanding job.

Don Myers 1965 (shown above with Ellen)

Thank you for the card and for thinking of us, but 9/13 is our anniversary, 49 years. Vin’s
birthday is July 1st and Carol’s is October 23rd. Thank you for taking the time to do this
and nice work to you and the gang providing a newsletter each month.
Carol Dukeman Piacenti & Vincent Piacenti 1965
Thank you for the anniversary card (48 years) and for thinking of us. It was much
appreciated.

Cheryl Canfield (Bayshore High, 1966) & Bob Ward 1966

Thank you so much for the birthday card. I always look forward to them. It’s nice to be
remembered. Ronnie Klein Witlin 1969 (Shown above w/ Adam * Ira * Zachary)
I just returned from a Land/Sea Adventure in Alaska. Another Bucket List item checked
off.

Frances Kosinski 1969

Many thanks for the lovely card, HixNews. This is easily my best birthday. It fell on
Yom Kippur, so it was filled with prayer, introspection and many hours of singing in my
temple choir. But it is also memorable in that I am the happiest I ever remember being. I
want for nothing. I am still working and fulfilled in my work; my finances are
manageable and I was able to purchase a condo this year. I have two wonderful
grandchildren who live nearby. I am truly blessed!!!

Tina Gardner Kwiatkowski 1969

Tina
Many thanks for your response to a birthday greeting sent to you from HixNews. I
noticed you actually read the note that was attached to the card because you responded
with some wonderful news that can be shared with your classmates. I send out about
2,000 cards every year and get minimal responses. And as a matter of fact, I get almost
zero news from our former classmates. I’ve been stealing stuff from Facebook and using
it in the newsletter. It’s a great source of up to date information and some of the topics
relate to our growing up in Hicksville. Send my love to your sisters, Ronni and Betty and
brother Jerry. It’s nice to hear from you.
Love yah Bobby

Thanks, Bobby…always nice to know stuff doesn't fall on deaf ears. Just a bit of updates
from the Gardner clan. Ronni Gardner Izzo (1959) is still in Levittown although I always
push for Florida. My sister, Betty Gardner Brunell (1972), just moved to Nashville and is
now near her daughter which is quite wonderful. Some sad news - our brother Jerry
Gardner, class of 1966, passed away the end of January. Very difficult to learn how to
have 2 sisters and no brother. He was ill for many years and really had no quality of life
although his saint of a wife did her best. She had lost her job a week before he passed but
after a “long” 6 months, she finally landed on her feet and is moving to Arizona to
start anew. That's it for us. Hope this finds you well.
Tina
FLASHBACK
A note from Sue Relling Cronin, class of 1962, to HixNews, back in 2006…
Hi HixNews - I think I may be the 1st person from Hicksville High School to fly on Air
Force One with the President and First Lady. I was briefing the First Lady for the Summit
of the Americas. I currently work at the White House as the Director for Western
Hemisphere Economics at the National Security Council.
I have done a lot of stuff - married an Army Officer, lived in Korea, Turkey and
Morocco, taught school, became a reading specialist, joined the Foreign Service in 1989,
served in Mexico, left the Foreign Service, joined the Office of the United States Trade
Representative in 2000 and then went to National Security Council at the White House in
2005.
FYI - My White House badge hangs from my Hicksville High School lanyard that I
bought when I went to the Homecoming Football game in 2000. I really enjoy HixNews
and thanks to the staff for putting it together.
Susan Patricia Relling Cronin of Falls Church, VA

died on August 17, 2015, of pancreatic cancer. Susan was born on November 4, 1944, in
Queens, New York, the eldest of eight children of Walter and Della Relling. They moved
their growing family to Hicksville (Long Island), New York where Susan graduated from
Hicksville High School. She earned a New York State Regents Scholarship and
graduated from Ladycliff Catholic College for Women in Highland Falls, New York, in
1966 with a BA in history and a minor in art.

She married Second Lieutenant (USA) Daniel F. Cronin on September 29, 1967, at Holy
Family Church in Hicksville, New York. She moved with her new husband to Colorado
Springs and remained there until he was deployed to Vietnam in 1968. Upon his return,
they moved to Fort Lewis in Tacoma, Washington, where their two children, Della and
Dan, were born. The foursome kept moving—Fort Benning, Georgia; Seoul, Korea;
Norfolk, Virginia; Ankara, Turkey; Fort Bragg, North Carolina; and Rabat, Morocco.
They returned stateside in 1988 and settled in Falls Church, Virginia. During the family’s
travels, Susan taught in public, private and international schools and universities, making
good use of the MS in Education she earned at Columbus State University. After settling
in Virginia, she was commissioned a Foreign Service Officer in 1989. Assignments
included serving as a Consular Officer in Juarez, Mexico, Economic Officer at the US
State Department, Economic Officer at the US Mission to the Organization of American
States, Trade Negotiator at the US Trade Representative’s Office and Economic Officer
to the National Security Council (NSC) staff. One of her career highlights was during her
time with the NSC when she briefed Mrs. and President George W. Bush—the latter on
Air Force One—on economic conditions in Argentina and Brazil in preparation for the
President’s attendance at the Summit of the Americas in 2005. In 2007, she joined the
Washington, DC, government relations office of Apple, Inc., and was a senior manager
for government relations in Latin America until she retired in 2013. Mrs. Cronin is
survived by her husband of 47 years, Daniel F. Cronin (LTC, USA, Ret.), her children,
Della Mangum (Robert) of Arlington, Virginia; Daniel (Stephanie) of Arlington Heights,
Illinois, and grandchildren, Benjamin and Lauren Cronin, to whom she was lovingly
devoted. She also leaves siblings Joseph Relling (Paula); Kate Relling (Mel Garskof);
Walter Relling (Wendy); Laurie Relling (James Rennard); Avé Whitted; Mary Jager
(George); Anthony Relling (Dorothy) and many in-laws, nieces, and nephews. Susan was
always a curious and informed person. She was also an avid fan and early adopter of
many technologies—even before joining Apple. She maintained a lifelong interest in
horses and developed into an accomplished rider herself, participating in numerous three-
day events. In later years, she concentrated exclusively on dressage. Some of her most
interesting moves included transporting her horse cross-country from Colorado to New
York and once again from Washington State to Georgia. She continued pursuing her
passion at stables in Korea, Turkey, and Morocco. When her grandchildren came along,
her focus—familiar to all who knew her—manifested into devotion to and nurturing of
them. Susan will be remembered by all who knew her and the many who loved and
appreciated her for her intellect, compassion, and straightforwardness—all fortified by an
uncanny sense of humor. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m., to 4:00 p.m.,
and from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 23, 2015, at Murphy Funeral Home,
4510 Wilson Blvd., Arlington, VA. A Funeral Mass will be held at St Charles Borromeo
Catholic Church at 3304 Washington Blvd., Arlington, VA on Monday, August 24, at
10:00 a.m. Interment at Arlington National Cemetery will be at a later date. In lieu of
flowers, contributions may be made to Catholic Relief Services (www.crs.org). You may
leave a condolence to the family at www.murphyfuneralhomes.com.

Vietnam Memorial Update
Subject: HHS Veterans from the Vietnam era
Date: Sun, 26 Aug 2018 18:54:43 -0700
My name is Robert Williams. I graduated in 1967. I was in the Navy from 3/68 to 4/72.
Does that qualify me for the new Vietnam Memorial? 1 med cruise and 4 north Atlantic
( North Pole).

Robert…Yes, you do qualify. I will send the information to Joe Carfora (class of 1964)
who is a member of the committee and Joe is maintaining the confirmed list of those who
served. Thanks for your service. I did almost 9 years in the navy (see attached) I was a
communication technician and was billeted as a cryptographer. Will send a confirmation
myself or maybe a note from Joe.
Regards
Buffalo Bob Casale
p.s. don't see you on the master mailing list for the Hicksville High School
newsletter http://hixnews.com
You may know about the monthly publication but if not, check it out at the above
hyperlink. In the menu at the top of the Home Page is a menu. Almost every newsletter is
available to view. Click on Archives and then click on any issue that is in the master list.
I did an In Memoriam video for your class of 1967...if you have not seen
https://youtu.be/EZYQJbUYiqE

A note to Buffalo Bob…From Bob Williams Fantastic video and sad to see so many
who have passed. If you have time maybe you could see my Facebook Page
azbobwilliams@aol.com.
I’ve lived in Hicksville since the early 1950's. My mom had a Dance school, the “Marge
Williams Dance Studio that was housed at 27 Larch Street in Hicksville for over 50
years. (go to Facebook page "Marge Williams Remembered")
My inlaws Wenck and then name Cuccaro and Antonucci Family since 1923. Father in
law K of C recording Secretary for more than 22 years. My Mother-in-law’s pictures still
hang in the sweet shop. My Dad was HFD and then I was HFD, Rescue Captain, EMT/
AEMT / Paramedic. I organized a major Disaster Drill at the Junior High School. I'm
now retired and living in Mesa, Arizona because I can't afford to live in Hicksville.
Went to HS with B.J. Computer Dispatch system in HFD for 20 years. My Bob's (4) all
graduated Hicksville High.

A note to Bob Williams…From Joe Carfora…I was out of town until last night, so I'm
just now getting to your email below that you sent to Bob Casale. We already have two
Robert Williams' on the Confirmed List of Names, as follows:
Williams, Robert USMC RVN - HHS 1966
Williams, Robert S. USN GUANTANAMO BAY 20 + RET HHS 1968
Judging from your email, you would be Robert S., the 2nd listing, but we appear to have
the wrong graduation date for you and also the wrong active duty service location. Either
that or, there should be three Robert Williams' on our list! Please help me here by giving
me your middle initial and I will update our Confirmed List of names accordingly, as
soon as I hear back from you.
Thanks!
Joe
Memorial Project Coordinator

Joe…There were several Robert Williams when I was there. I lived on 27 Larch St and
another lived on OAK street. I have enclosed a picture of me in Navy. That's the only one
other than my ID card. Interesting note: Because of the way our system worked they sent
around an absentee list meaning we could cut if one of us was out.
Bob

Hi, Bob…I'm sure Bob or Robert Williams is a pretty common name! I've added you to
the list and with you, we now have 1,930 names that are Confirmed as having served
during the Vietnam War Era. While we are not publishing in the September issue of
HixNews due to my 2-week trip these past weeks, I have already added you to the
Confirmed List of Names and you can see the addition of your name by clicking on the
following link:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1prBjcnL66AHva1gwdW5rzzzwM3_5fXNc8tx9
x60R_u4/edit?u sp=sharing
Let me know, should you have any questions.
Thanks!
Joe
Joe…Awesome, thank you so much! I found some friends who had passed and I did not
know of their passing. It was nice seeing their pictures and remembering them. Is there a
list of those from each year? Or just how many? Just curious? Must be a great deal of
work verifying 2000 names on your memorial list. Thank You.
Bob

Bob…An answer to your question about a list of who passed from each year. Go
to http://hixnews.com and in the menu, at the top of the Home Page, click on In
Memoriam and there is a listing for all classes and included is the class of 1967 We, the
editors, know that there are many who are gone but aren't listed. If you know of anyone
not listed, send a note to editors@hixnews.com and we can add their name to the roster.
Thanks again for your service and please send also to the editors your birthday and, if
married, your wife's name and birthday and your anniversary. We send out birthday cards
to almost 2,000 former students and family.
Regards
Buffalo Bob

I see Bob already directed you to the "In Memorium" List on HixNews, so this will help
you catch up with your old friends, some of whom may have passed away. I know it's
hard to reconnect all the way out in Mesa. My sister and her husband, both HHS
graduates, have lived in Phoenix, now in Paradise Valley, since 1983. Thanks to
HixNews, they recently attended a multiple class reunion out on the Island. Suggest you
try and make it a point each month, on the first of the month, or after, to check out the
latest edition at www.hixnews.com.
