WARRANTY NOTICE
Proper installation procedures must be followed when
installing and operating RET equipment. Failure to assure
installations are done properly by trained installation personnel
and to follow procedures discussed in this bulletin may cause
warranty for such products to be void.
Andrew requires that all RET installations be pre-tested and
configured prior to installation using the latest controller
software version. Failure to conduct pre-test and pre-installation
procedures defined by Andrew will void warranty.

SAFETY NOTICE
The installation, maintenance, or removal of an antenna
requires qualified, experienced personnel. Andrew installation
instructions are written for such installation personnel.
Antenna systems should be inspected once a year by qualified
personnel to verify proper installation, maintenance, and
condition of equipment.

Section 1
Updating Firmware of Andrew Devices

1.0 Introduction
This document describes how to upgrade actuator firmware of Andrew actuators using the
ATC200-LITE-USB portable controller. Please note that the portable controller requires AC power
supply.
The Andrew ATC Lite controller software is required to be installed on a laptop. Visit the Andrew
website at www.andrew.com to download the latest software and installation instructions.

2.0 Options
In order to upgrade actuator firmware, the Andrew portable controller needs to have a data
connection to the actuator. That can be achieved in three different ways.

2.1 Option 1: Using a RET jumper cable

If the antenna is not installed yet, or if the portable controller can be moved close to the actuator,
then a short RET jumper cable can be used to connect the portable controller to the actuator.
See Figure 2-1.

2.2 Option 2: Using a RET home-run cable

If the actuator is already installed, then a home-run RET cable can be used to connect the actuator
to the portable controller.
If the site configuration includes a TMA or a top SBT, then the small RET jumper cable between TMA/
SBT and actuator will be temporarily disconnected and replaced by the home-run RET cable which
connects the controller and the actuator. See Figure 2-2.
After successful firmware upgrade, disconnect the home run cable. Re-attach the small RET jumper
cable (that was previously disconnected) to the actuator.

2.3 Option 3: Using Smart Bias Tees

In order to connect the portable controller with the installed actuator, Smart Bias Tees (SBTs) can be
used to inject the AISG signal into the RF feeder cable.
At the top of the site, either a top SBT or TMA is used to extract the signal from the RF line. A short
RET jumper cable connects the TOP SBT with the actuator. That top configuration does not need to
be changed for the firmware upgrade if the top SBT or TMA supports AISG mode. See Figure 2-3,
Option 3A.
On the bottom of the site, a bottom SBT is needed. If no bottom SBT is permanently installed, then a
bottom SBT can be temporarily inserted into the RF line. Therefore, the RF jumper cable will be dis-
connected from the BTS/Node-B and connected to the bottom SBT. Then a short RET jumper cable
is attached to the bottom SBT and the portable controller. See Figure 2-3, Option 3B.
After the successful firmware update, the bottom SBT will be removed again and the RF cable is
attached to the BTS/Node-B. See Figure 2-3, Option 3A.
