3. USE AND OPERATING PRINCIPLE


Before starting to drill, start the suction fan motor with the selection switch.
During drilling, and when flushing is on, the dust collector sucks the dust that comes out
with flushing air. The dust goes through the suction head to the dust collector where the
heaviest particles fall down to the ground through the closing rubber. The lighter particles
will be separated by filters in fine separator and the clean air is blown out through the
exhaust port.
Dust collector cleaning means that impulses of pressurized air are blown through ten
filtering elements at a time. The cleaning process is electrically controlled so that the
elements receive approx. 0.1 second impulses at 5 second intervals after drilling. The time
settings somewhat depend on the drilling conditions.
When percussion is switched off, the flushing valve closes and suction in the dust collector
ends as the pressure stops affecting the cut--off cylinder and the exhaust port flap is closed
by the spring.
Unnecessary cleaning of filter elements can be prevented by the dust collector selection
switch.

4. OPERATION OF DUST COLLECTOR


4.1. Dust collection
When rock drill percussion is switched on, the flushing valve (4) opens. Pressure is now
directed to the rock drill flushing line and through the flap closing valve (8) to the cut--off
cylinder (7) of the dust collector flap. The pressure affecting the cut--off cylinder (7) keeps
the exhaust port flap open.

4.2. Blow--out

When rock drill percussion is switched on the timer unit (6) activates each of the blow--out
valves (5) in turn every 30 seconds for 0.1 second. Impulses of pressurized air remove
the heaviest dust layer from the filtering element. When rock drill percussion is switched
off, the flushing valve closes, the pressure affecting the cut--off cylinder (7) disappears and
the exhaust port flap is closed by a spring. The timer unit (6) is now activated and gives
a 0.1 second current impulse every 5 seconds in turn to the blow--out valves (5). When
the blow--out valve opens it lets an impulse of pressurized air to ten filters at a time. These
impulses will clean the filters and after 10 impulses the timer unit stops the blow--out
process.

5. HYDRAULICS

5.1. Hydraulic components


80. Gear pump; output for the dust collector
81. Dust collector selection valve; switches the dust collector on and off.
82. Dust collector hydraulic motor (number 2 on component list); rotates the fan

84. Pressure relief valve for dust collector circuit
The dust collector motor (82) is driven by oil from the gear pump (80). The maximum
pressure of the circuit is determined by the pressure relief valve (84) which is set to 210
bar.
The dust collector is switched on and off with the switch S17 in the cabin. The switch
controls the directional valve (81). The valve directs oil flow either to the dust collector or
to the tank.
The valve (83), connected in parallel with the motor (82), has the purpose of letting oil to
the intake side of the motor when the valve (81) is closed. This arrangement removes
cavitation problems.

6. MAINTENANCE
6.1. Filter elements
If dust is blown out through the exhaust port of the dust collector it indicates a broken filter
element. Replace the element immediately. The dust flowing through the broken
element quickly wears down the blower fan. The elements are screw type with a thread
at the top.
The elements can be checked and blown clean with pressurized air through the control
door on the side of the dust collector. Do not blow the pressurized air too close to the filter
elements or you may damage them.

6.2. Blow--out valve

The dust collector cleaning line includes


magnetic valves (2 pcs) for 16 bar
pressure.

6.3. Timer unit duco timer

The timer unit is a separate module and it


is located in a terminal box at the rear end
of the rig.
Adjustments are allowed only when ignition
key is in STOP--position.

The adjusting screw T10N is used for


adjusting the length of current impulses for
blow--out valves (e.g. 0,5 s).
The adjusting screw T10F is used for
adjusting the intervals between impulses
(e.g. 5 s).
The adjusting screw T3DOF is used for
adjusting the intervals between impulses
during drilling (e.g. 30 s). This feature can
be used when a jump wire is connected
between the timer unit terminals 2 and 3.

6.4. Repair and maintenance of the dust collector hydraulic motor


Construction and operation

5 F11 is a piston motor consisting of one


4 bearing housing and one barrel housing.
2 Spherical pistons (1) with piston rings (2)
are working at an angle of 40˚ with the drive
1 shaft (3). When the pressure connection
receives oil, the pistons are pressed down
in the cylinder barrel (4) and rotate the
shaft. A spring device presses the cylinder
6 3 barrel (4) against the port plate (5) and the
end cover respectively. A gear wheel (6)
8 connects the cylinder barrel with the drive
shaft so that they rotate at the same speed.
The drive shaft is carried in two solid
tapered roller bearings (8).
Operation check
The condition of the motor can be checked by measuring the drain oil flow. Remove the
drain line and keep it above a collecting vessel. Run the unit at normal speed and
pressurize the system with about 150--200 bar.
D Check that there is no leakage at the shaft seal and the housing halves.
D Measure the drain oil running out during one minute. If, when the unit is
pressurized, the drain flow exceeds the values indicated, the unit is worn and must
be replaced.

Exchange of seal ring

Remove the retaining ring holding the seal


ring and the back--up washer.
Use a sharp instrument to remove the seal
ring. Take good care not to damage the
sealing surface of the shaft.
When fitting a seal ring, an assembling
device made of pipe can be used.

Dismantling

Before dismantling, clean carefully the


outside of the motor.
If there is a coupling on the shaft, it must be
removed

1. Remove the four hexagon screws


holding the housing halves, and lever them
apart by means of two screwdrivers.
Collect the two parts of the adjustment
washer fitted under the guide spacer for the
barrel housing.

2. Mark pistons and corresponding ball


sockets so that the pistons can be fitted in
the same sockets at the reassembly.

3. Remove the pistons by holding them in


line with the drive shaft and pulling them
out.

4. Force the bearing assembly out of the


bearing housing by placing the housing on
a pipe and applying a force on the shaft.
The bearing assembly could also be
removed by grasping the bearing housing
with both hands and knocking the shaft
against a wooden block, which will not
damage the shaft.

5. Remove the seal ring by taking out the


retaining ring and the back--up ring.

The bearing assembly should not be dismantled unless the bearings have been
damaged, because the fitting of new bearings requires careful adjustment of play and
backlash.

6. To dismantle the bearings, remove the


lock nut, put the shaft on a pipe so that this
supports the gear ring and press out the
shaft.

7. To remove the cylinder barrel, strike the


housing against a wooden block so that the
barrel is knocked out.

Check and exchange of parts


After the dismantling of the F11 motor, all parts should be carefully cleaned in cleaners’
naphtha.
If the leakage of the F11 unit is too high, the following parts are generally damaged or worn:
D Piston rings
D End surface of the cylinder barrel
D Port plate
Scratches and marks on these parts always affect the functioning of the unit. If necessary,
exchange these parts.

1. All sealings, seal rings and o--rings


50% Max
should be exchanged.

2. Piston rings which are worn on more than


half the ring width should be exchanged.
Use for instance small pliers intended for
circlips to remove the piston rings. When
fitting piston rings, be sure that the
spherical surface of the ring is turned to
coincide with the form of the piston head.

3. The end surfaces of the cylinder barrel


and the mating surface of the port plate can
be renovated, if necessary, by cautious
lapping followed by careful cleaning.

4. The shaft bearing clearance can, if


required, be adjusted with the lock nut. The
spacer between the bearings must not be
too loose, but it should be possible to push
it sideways by hand.

5. Check that the portion of the shaft in


contact with the seal ring is not damaged.
If so, replace the shaft.

Assembly
All parts should be well cleaned and slightly lubricated with hydraulic or lubricating oil. The
reassembly should be effected in reverse order to the dismantling.

1. Fasten the barrel housing in a vice as


shown in the sketch.

2. Fit the port plate in the barrel housing as


shown in the sketch.

3. The barrel retaining ring should be fitted


according to the illustration. The cylinder
barrel should then be forced down, the slot
in the retaining ring lining up with the
location of the barrel housing.

4. Fit the guide spacer complete with


o--rings ensuring that the cut--out is in the
position shown.

5. Fit the adjusting washers as illustrated.


The thickness of the washers should result
in a gear backlash of 0,05 -- 0,15 mm.
Washers of other dimensions might be
required if the bearings on the shaft have
been exchanged.

6. The teeth of the cylinder barrel and the


ring gear on the shaft are marked in order
to ensure that the teeth mesh correctly so
that the pistons are in line with the cylinder
bores.
Position the marked gear gap on the
cylinder barrel so that it appears in the
cut--out of the guide spacer. In order to
facilitate the fitting, the mark might be
reinforced with white color.

7. MOVABLE SUCTION HEAD


The suction line in good condition is a must for effective dust collection. The movable
suction head makes drilling easier in a slope or uneven terrain. In addition, it can be used
to prevent water from entering the filters when drilling wet holes.

The movable suction head is installed at the lower end of the feed beams. The suction
head can be moved with the hydraulic cylinder within a range of 250 mm.

7.1. Dust collector flap closing valve (suction cut--off, optional)


The valve is installed in the power unit. When the valve is closed the pressure ceases to
affect the cut--off cylinder, and the dust collector valve closes. The system prevents dust
collector operation when drilling, for instance a water hole.

8. TROUBLESHOOTING
1. Air flows continually along the blow--out line to the filter elements
D Blow--out magnetic valve does not function.
-- If the magnetic valve spool is stuck open, clean the valve or replace it.
2. Dust collector blow out does not operate at all
D Blow--out selector switch in the wrong position.
-- Turn the switch to correct position.
D Timer unit does not function.
-- Check first that the timer unit is correctly adjusted. If the adjustment is
correct and the blow--out does not function, replace the timer unit.
D Blow--out magnetic valve spool stuck closed.
-- Clean the valve or replace it.
3. Dust collector is ineffective
D Filter element blow--out sequence too slow or blow--out does not function at all.
-- Adjust timer unit.
D Closing valve open, causing suction air leakage resulting in ineffectiveness of
blow--out.
D Closing valve stuck closed, resulting in insufficient suction for the fine separator.
-- Check the flap and cut--out cylinder operation. Check cylinder tightness
and spring condition, too.
D Wet dust has clogged the suction hose or the filter elements.
-- Clean the hose and the filters.
D Suction hose or suction head rubber sealings broken.
-- Replace the hose or the suction head sealings.
D Hydraulics does not function normally
-- Check the pressures, hydraulic pump, amount of the hydraulic motor oil
drain
4. Dust comes out from the dust collector exhaust port.
D One or several filter elements broken.
-- Replace the broken filter elements immediately.
